Experiment - 12: Power Angle Curve of Syncronous Machine

This document describes an experiment to draw the power-angle characteristics curve for a synchronous machine. The procedure connects the alternator and DC motor in a circuit and loads the alternator in steps while maintaining a constant voltage. Meter readings are recorded to calculate the power, power factor, induced EMF and synchronous impedance. Graphs of power output versus load angle are plotted. The aim is to conduct the experiment and analyze the power-angle curve of the synchronous alternator.

EXPERIMENT_12
POWER ANGLE CURVE OF SYNCRONOUS MACHINE

AIM: Conduct an experiment to draw the Power - Angle characteristics for the given alternator.

APPARATUS:

Ammeter (MC) 0-lA 1 No.

Ammeter (MI) 0 - l0 A 1 No.
Voltmeter (MC) 0 - 300V 1 No.
Voltmeter (MI) 0 - 600 V 1 No.
Wattmeters 5/10A, 600 V U.P.F 2 No.s

Tachometer 1 No.

CIRCUIT DIAGRAM:

PROCEDURE:
1. Make circuit connections as shown in the circuit diagram.
2. With 18 Ohms rheostat in cut-in position, 200 Ohms rheostat in cut-out position, and 700
ohm rheostat in cut-in position, close the supply switch S1.
3. Cut - out the 18 ohms rheostat gradually and if necessary cut-in the 200 ohm rheostat, bring
the motor to its rated speed
4. Close the supply switch S2, increase the current in the field winding by cutting out the
700 ohm rheostat and bring the alternator terminal voltage to the rated value.
5. Note down the meter readings in the tabular column
6. Close the switch S3. Load the alternator in steps and at every load adjust the
excitation to maintain constant voltage at the terminals of the alternator. Note down
the meter readings in the tabular column.
7. Reduce the load, reduce the excitation of the alternator, open the load switch S3.
Open the switch S2. Bring all the rheostats in DC motor circuit to their initial
positions and open the supply switch S1.

PROCEDURE FOR MEASUREMENT OF ARMATURE RESISTANCE (STATOR

RESISTANCE):
1. Connections are made as shown -in the circuit diagram
2. Close the supply switch S.
3. Switch on the lamp load in steps and note down the readings of voltmeter and ammeter in
the tabular column.

4. Switch off the lamp load and open the supply switch S.

PROCEDURE FOR OC AND SC TEST:

1. Make circuit connections as shown in the circuit diagram.
2. With 18 Ohms rheostat in cut-in position, 200 Ohms rheostat in cut-out position, and 700
ohm rheostat in cut-in position, close the supply switch S1.
3. Cut - out the 18 ohms rheostat gradually and if necessary cut-in the 200 ohm rheostat , the
motor is brought to its rated speed
4. Close the supply switch S2, increase the current in the field winding in steps by varying the
700 ohm rheostat and at each step note down the field current and the induced voltage of the
alternator.
5. Reduce the excitation of the alternator to its minimum and the close the switch S3. This short
circuits the alternator terminals. Adjust the excitation of the alternator slowly such that
sufficient voltage is induced to circulate rated current in the stator windings of the
alternator. The ammeter connected across the lines indicates this current.
6. Reduce the excitation to the minimum, Open switch S3, bring all the rheostats back to their
initial position and open the supply switches S1 and S2.

Effective armature resistance, Ra = 1.25 x Resistance measured per phase.

From the OC and SC characteristics, we calculate, the saturated synchronous

impedance Zs.

Zs = Rated voltage / Short circuit current corresponding to rated voltage.

Synchronous reactance Xs = √ Z 2s−R 2a

Synchronous Impedance, Zs = Ra + j Xs

Induced voltage Eg ∠ δ ° = V ∠ 0 °+ I a Z s ∠ θ °

GRAPHS: Student is required to plot the following graph:

Power output P Vs Load angle δ

RESULT: Student should comment on the power Vs Angle curve.
