Lesson Plan Types of Skeletons
Prior Learning: It will be helpful if children can explore different human or animal skeletons.
Learning Sequence
Skeleton: What do you associate with the word skeleton? Children to discuss with a partner and feedback to
the whole class.
Vertebrates and Invertebrates: Read the definition of a vertebrate/invertebrate. Show an example of an animal
with each type of skeleton.
Vertebrates Or Invertebrates: Go through the pictures of various animals. Children decide whether the animal
shown is an invertebrate or a vertebrate. Address any misconceptions that arise – e.g. children who believe a
butterfly has a backbone because it has a long body.
Types of Skeletons: Show picture of three types of skeletons. What do you think the words endoskeleton,
exoskeleton and hydrostatic skeleton mean?
Skeleton Types: Children discuss the question. Can you give an example of an animal that has an endo, exo or
hydrostatic skeleton? with a talk partner and feedback to the class.
Pros and Cons of Different Skeleton Types: Children sort statements describing the pros and cons of different
types of skeletons. Which type of skeleton is best? Why?
Taskit
Drawit: Draw a human being with an exoskeleton or a hydrostatic skeleton.
Filmit: Create a short video explanation of the different types of skeleton with children acting out how they would move based on the
different types of skeletons.
Writeit: Create a poster advertising a type of skeleton using persuasive language.
Visitorit: Ask a professional animal handler to come in and show animals with a variety of different types of skeletons.
