1 Getting started with HP Insight Control
Insight Control is a product in the HP Insight Management family of products that can be
downloaded from the Internet. Insight Control is installed through the HP Insight Management
Installer wizard, which integrates the installation and upgrade of all Insight Management products.
For more information about installing Insight Control, see the Insight Management installation
documentation at the following web site:
http://www.hp.com/go/insightcontrol/
This chapter provides an introduction to using the features and capabilities delivered by Insight
Control and how it is integrated into HP Systems Insight Manager.

How to use this guide

This guide is intended to be a quick starting point for you to learn about Insight Control features
and capabilities and how to launch them. Because the Installer wizard gave you the option to
install all or to selectively install a customized list of Insight Control features, the user documentation
for each feature is modularized in its own user guide. So, if you want more information about a
particular feature that is not provided in this guide, see the detailed user guides for the Insight
Control feature or features you want to learn more about.
Individual Insight Control feature-focused user guides are available online at the following web
site:
http://www.hp.com/go/insightcontrol/docs

Insight Control integration with HP SIM

Insight Control delivers a set of software and tools that combine with Systems Insight Manager to
provide a powerful mechanism for discovering, installing, monitoring, and managing HP ProLiant
servers. Insight Control enhances the system monitoring, management, and deployment features
of Systems Insight Manager.
Insight Control provides a number of plug-in tools to Systems Insight Manager that enable you to
perform software deployment, monitoring, and management tasks. Systems Insight Manager
features enable you to manage and monitor a range of objects including servers, switches, and
enclosures.
To access and use Systems Insight Manager features through the Systems Insight Manager
management console, the Central Management Server (CMS), you must have installed Insight
Control as part of the Insight Management installation process. After installation, you must apply
a license to each server you want to manage and monitor with Insight Control.
If you did not apply a license to each server during the initial installation and configuration of
Insight Management, use the Insight managed system setup wizard or the HP-UX System
Administration Manager license manager to do so. See “Adding and applying licenses” (page
14) for instructions.
Systems Insight Manager and Insight Control features are launched from the server you chose to
be the CMS, the server on which you installed HP SIM and Insight Control.

Ensure success by running the Insight Management Advisor first

The Insight Management Advisor, included on the Insight Manager DVD, analyzes and tests your
current software and hardware environment to ensure that it meets all installation criteria and
provides you with corrective action for problems it identifies. HP recommends that you run the
Advisor before you begin the installation or upgrade process. The results of the tests help you to
identify issues or deficiencies with the target server that would cause issues with HP Systems Insight
Manager and its integrated software products. You can select the types of tests to run or restrict

How to use this guide 5

the tests to those for a specific software product. See also “Verifying your software and hardware
environment with the Insight Management Advisor” (page 11).

Alternative consoles
As an alternative management console to the CMS, you can install HP Insight Control for Microsoft
System Center software onto the System Center Operations Manager and System Center
Configuration Manager consoles rather than on an HP SIM CMS console.
If you have chosen a VMware vCenter Server as your primary console, you can install HP Insight
Control for VMware vCenter Server software which adds several extensions to make the ProLiant
management information available through the VMware vCenter Server console, enabling
comprehensive monitoring, remote control, and power optimization directly from the vCenter
console.
HP Insight Control for Microsoft System Center and HP Insight Control for VMware vCenter Server
can be obtained from the HP Insight Software downloads web site:
http://www.hp.com/go/insightupdates
The installation instructions and other documentation are included in the ISO images.

Insight Control features and capabilities

A full installation of all Insight Control components provides the following features and capabilities:

NOTE: If you did not install all components of Insight Control the list of features will vary for your
environment.

• Rapid OS provisioning
Insight Control provides a server provisioning solution that facilitates the installation,
configuration, and deployment of high volumes of servers. Server configuration time is reduced,
making it possible to scale server deployments to high volumes in a rapid fashion.

NOTE: HP Insight Control server provisioning replaces HP Insight Control server deployment.
See “Insight Control server provisioning” (page 17).
Insight Control also enables you to perform remote operations on the server such as turning
power on or off and rebooting. The only physical intervention required by your IT staff is
installing the server into the rack, connecting the server to the network, and reading the server's
serial number/iLO information pull tab.
See “Provisioning operating systems and virtualization software to managed systems” (page
17) for more information.
• Virtualized environment management
Insight Control virtual machine management capabilities provide tracking, monitoring, and
control functions for organizing an effective virtualized environment.
Key benefits include the ability to manage physical and virtual servers from one user interface,
being able to gauge the health of the complete infrastructure using performance indicators
for hosts and virtual machines, and automatic responses to predictive hardware failures on
hypervisor host servers by relocating virtual machines before a server fails, reducing downtime.
See “Managing a virtual machine environment” (page 19) for more information.
• Robust power management
Insight Control includes a set of power management tools that provide centralized monitoring
and control of server power consumption and thermal output.
See “Optimizing server power consumption and cooling” (page 21) for more information.
• Robust server performance monitoring and management

6 Getting started with HP Insight Control

Insight Control includes a set of performance management tools that enable you to set
performance thresholds, run various performance reports, and analyze real time performance
of one or more servers. Insight Control performance monitoring detects performance bottlenecks
and provides performance improvement recommendations.
See “Managing and monitoring server performance” (page 23) for more information.
• Automated and accurate server migration
The server migration application enables you to perform Physical-to-ProLiant (P2P),
Virtual-to-ProLiant (V2P), Physical-to-Virtual (P2V), or Virtual-to-Virtual (V2V) migrations from a
single integrated graphical user interface. The migration process is automated, accurate,
affordable, and simple to use. Server migration features enable you to replicate the servers
that are running correctly, but might be under-performing or are over-provisioned, to a new
physical or virtual server in an automated and accurate way.
See “Migrating existing physical or virtual servers to another server” (page 24) for more
information.
• Scalable monitoring for hundreds of servers
Insight Control and Systems Insight Manager can monitor and manage hundreds of servers.
See also the latest HP Insight Control Release Notes at http://www.hp.com/go/insightcontrol/
docs/ for more information.

Integrated security features

The HP Insight Management Installation and Configuration Guide lists security considerations and
best practices recommended by HP. Review that information to ensure you have implemented an
appropriate security solution for your environment.
The following features have been integrated into HP Systems Insight Manager and Insight Control
to make them secure:
• Browser Connections
Systems Insight Manager enforces a secure HTTPS connection to the web browser.
• User Names and Passwords
A Systems Insight Manager administrator has total flexibility to configure user accounts and
passwords to allow or restrict actions on managed systems. User logins are authenticated by
the OS on the CMS, and all passwords are encrypted. See the HP Systems Insight Manager
User Guide for more information about security:
http://www.hp.com/go/insightmanagement/sim/docs
See also User name and password not accepted in “Troubleshooting Insight Control features”
(page 31).
• Firewalls
HP SIM and Insight Control work with a firewall if you open the appropriate ports.
For more information, see Managing HP Servers through Firewalls with Insight Management
7.2 in the Systems Insight Manager information library. This white paper describes management
protocols, separating the management network, managing through a firewall using a single
network, and open ports on the CMS:
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/management/unified/infolibrary_ic.html
• Digital signature
HP software, firmware, drivers, applications, and other executables are delivered with an
electronic cryptographic signature. This electronic signature gives you an industry standard
method to verify the integrity and authenticity of the code you have received before you deploy
it.
Integrated security features 7
This digital signature is used in a signature verification process as follows:
◦ To verify and validate the authenticity of the code; that is, that HP created the code in
question.
◦ To verify and validate the integrity of the code; that is, that the code in question was not
altered since it was originally signed by HP.
See the HP Insight Management Getting Started Guide at http://www.hp.com/go/insightcontrol/
docs/ for additional security recommendations.

Open source products included with Insight Control

For information about the open-source products included with Insight Control (including license
constraints, updates, and security information), see the end-user license agreement (EULA), which
is included in the Insight Management Installer on Insight Management DVD #1.

Accessing and launching Insight Control features

Most Insight Control features are launched from the HP SIM GUI. See “Accessing HP Systems
Insight Manager” (page 9). However, for accessing Insight Control server provisioning, you must
go to http://www.hp.com/go/insightupdates and download the zip file to your host computer.
Or if using the media kit, insert the USB flash drive on a Windows or Linux system in your
environment. You can access the Insight Control server provisioning Installation Guide at HP Insight
Control server provisioning installation instructions
Each chapter in this user guide provides launching instructions for Insight Control or Insight
Management features.

8 Getting started with HP Insight Control

2 Accessing HP Systems Insight Manager
Insight Control delivers its features as plug-ins to the HP SIM user interface, which runs in a web
browser. To access these plug-ins, you must sign in and connect to the HP SIM management console:
1. Open a browser window.

NOTE: Supported browsers are listed in the HP Insight Management Support Matrix.

2. Enter the web address of the CMS using either of the following address formats:
• http://CMS_IP_address:280/
The web address comprises the following:
• The fully qualified host name of the CMS or its IP address
• The default access port, port 280
For example, if the fully qualified host name of the CMS is earth.example.com, enter the
following web address in your web browser:
http://earth.example.com:280/
3. When the sign-in screen appears, enter the HP SIM administrator user name and the associated
password.

NOTE: The sign-in screen will have either HP Insight Control or HP Matrix Operating
Environment shown on it, depending on the software products you installed. If you installed
only Insight Control, HP Insight Control is shown on the sign-in screen. If you installed at least
one component of Matrix Operating Environment, HP Matrix Operating Environment is shown
on the sign-in screen.

Using the HP SIM quick launch feature

To manage a single server rather than multiple servers, you can access the HP SIM Quick Launch
feature from the system table view page as follows:
1. Select a server from the System and Event Collections panel in the left pane of the HP SIM
Home page.
2. Hover the mouse over the Quick Launch... link next to the tabs.
A drop down list of Insight Control, HP SIM, and other features that are appropriate to launch
on a single managed system appears.
3. Select a feature from the list, and it will launch, focused on the server you selected.

Running and viewing task results from the HP SIM management console
HP SIM enables you to manage systems by scheduling and running tasks from its user interface.
You can run tasks immediately or schedule them to run later.

Using the HP SIM quick launch feature 9

Regardless of whether you run a task immediately or schedule it to run at a later date, task results
are available as follows:
• When you run a task by clicking the Run Now, button, the Task Results page for that task
appears automatically, which enables you to follow the progression of the task from start to
finish.
• When you schedule a task or click a Run Now button to run a task immediately, you can
access the task results screen from the Tasks & Logs→View Task Results… menu item.
• When you schedule a task to run in the future, you can use the Tasks & Logs→View All
Scheduled Tasks... or Tasks & Logs→View Task Results… menu items to view the results of a
specific task.

CMS Reconfigure Tool

The CMS Reconfigure Tool provides four commands that enable you to make common
reconfiguration changes to HP Insight Control.
Making operating system or CMS configuration changes is challenging because of the difficulty
knowing exactly what steps are needed for a particular operating system/CMS installed
environment. The mxreconfig command provides an automated way to perform these tasks for
the HP Insight Control components. The CMS Reconfigure Tool is supported for HP Insight Control
7.0 and later, on systems running Microsoft Windows with an SQL server.
HP Insight Control supports the following operations using the Reconfigure Tool:
Table 1 Reconfigure Tasks
Task Command

Reconfiguring the CMS password mxreconfig -m password

Reconfiguring the CMS host and IP attributes mxreconfig -m host

Reconfiguring the CMS database credentials mxreconfig -m dbauth -a <db-user-name>

Reconfiguring the CMS to use a different database mxreconfig -m sqlredirect -s

<db-server-name>

For information about using these commands see the HP Systems Insight Manager User Guide at
http://www.hp.com/go/insightmanagement/sim/docs.
Prior to using any of the CMS reconfigure commands, ensure the CMS and associated database
are backed up. For information about backing up the CMS, see the Backing up and restoring HP
Insight Software Central Management System (Windows) white paper at:http://www.hp.com/

3 Verifying your software and hardware environment with
the Insight Management Advisor
During the Insight Management installation process, you run the Insight Management Advisor
before beginning the installation and then again just after you select the software you want to
install or upgrade. The Insight Management Advisor analyzes and tests your current software and
hardware environment to ensure that it meets all installation criteria before you begin an installation
or upgrade process. The results identify any deficiencies with the target server(s) that could cause
issues with HP Systems Insight Manager or its integrated Insight Management products.

Using Insight Management Advisor to obtain diagnostic information

You can run the Insight Management Advisor at any time to provide diagnostic information on
conditions that might affect the performance of HP Systems Insight Manager and any Insight
Management product.
Consider running the Insight Management Advisor when you change OS tunable parameters,
install new software, reduce the memory or CPUs on a host, or anything else in the environment
that changes after the installation.

Using the Insight Management Advisor filtering capability

The Insight Management Advisor contains a filtering capability that enables you to restrict the tests
to run on one or more of the following software products:
• HP SIM
• HP Insight Control suites
• HP Matrix Operating Environment suites
To use the filtering capability, click Filter... near the top of the Insight Management Advisor screen.
From this screen, you can filter by the severity assigned to any test results, and you can filter by
product.
See “Step 3: Running the Insight Management Advisor” in the HP Insight Management Installation
and Configuration Guide for more options and information on how filtering works.

Using test results to take corrective action

When you run Insight Management Advisor, it provides results for each test it runs. HP recommends
that you click on the Test and Result links for any tests that resulted in minor, major, or failed
execution designations. Click a link in the Result column to open a detailed event log that might
help you understand the reason why the test was not successful. Click the corresponding Test link
to see suggested corrective actions.

Using Insight Management Advisor to obtain diagnostic information 11

NOTE: To sort Insight Management Advisor results:
• Click the Test column header to reorder the results by the test name.
• Click the Result column header to reorder the results by severity.

HP requires that you investigate and take corrective action to fix all items that caused a test to have
major errors or failed execution.
See “Step 3: Running the Insight Management Advisor” in the HP Insight Management Installation

12 Verifying your software and hardware environment with the Insight Management Advisor
4 Using the Insight managed system setup wizard
The Insight managed system setup wizard is an HP SIM plug-in tool that simplifies configuring
Insight Management components for use on managed systems. Configuration tasks include
assignment of licenses, agent deployment, and other configuration checks and actions. The wizard
is especially useful to configure managed systems for use with HP Matrix Operating Environment
components, but it can also be used to set up managed systems for Insight Control and HP SIM.
The first time you instantiate the GUI, you are prompted to select key settings that will get you the
best fit and most functionality from your managed systems. Thereafter, you can run the Insight
managed system setup wizard at any time to change the configuration or management features
of your managed systems.
You also can use the wizard to diagnose configuration issues with your managed systems. The
Analyze Systems step of the wizard determines if licenses, agents, or other configuration tasks are
needed to enable the chosen management features on the target managed systems.

Prerequisites to running the Insight managed system setup wizard

Before you can run the Insight managed system setup wizard, the target managed systems must
be discovered in HP SIM and must have valid credentials stored within HP SIM.

When you install Insight Management, the HP Insight Management Getting Started Guide instructs
you to use the Insight managed system setup wizard to add and apply licenses to your managed
systems.

NOTE: For instructions on how to use the managed system setup wizard to initially add and
apply licenses, see the HP Insight Managed System Setup Wizard Getting Started Guide, which
is available at the following web site:
http://www.hp.com/go/insightmanagement/docs
See also “Using the Insight managed system setup wizard” (page 13)

Use the procedures in this chapter to add and apply licenses whenever you purchase additional
Insight Control licenses from HP.

Licensing prerequisites
Before you can license Insight Control for use, the Insight Control licensing and reports software
must be installed (through the Insight Management Installer wizard). The licensing software is
required to be able apply Insight Control licenses to any supported device.
In addition, before you can add a license, at least one managed system in your hardware
configuration must be discovered.
A license is required for each physical server and each virtual machine host you want to manage.
Insight Control server provisioning requires one license for each server (physical) that is deployed
with Insight Control.

Licenses required for Insight Control

The license redemption process for Insight Control generates separate license keys for the following:
• Server migration, virtual machine management, power management, and performance
management
• Server deployment (license file)

NOTE: Insight Control server provisioning does not require a separate license file. The rights
to use Insight Control server provisioning are included in the Insight Control license.

• HP iLO Advanced or HP iLO Advanced for BladeSystem license, and (only for iLO 4 1.20 or
later) the HP iLO Essentials or the HP iLO Scale-Out license
Licensing is a two-step process:
1. Add the license to the HP SIM license manager.
2. Apply the license to your managed systems.
For successful operation, you must add and apply the license keys associated with all products to
each managed system.

Adding an Insight Control license

To add an Insight Control license to the HP SIM license manager, follow these steps:

NOTE: Click the help question mark (?) in the upper right corner of the screen if you need
assistance while adding a license.
1. Select the following menu item from the CMS management console GUI:
Deploy→License Manager...

14 Adding and applying licenses

2. Click Add Licenses....
3. Do one of the following to add the license:
a. Select the option to Specify a file name and path: and enter the path to the license key
file.
b. Manually enter the Insight Control license key (the license key consists of five sets of five
characters).

NOTE: HP recommends that you add license(s) directly from a license key file to avoid
chances of error from manual transcription.

4. Before continuing to the next step, verify that you typed the license key characters exactly as
shown on your license agreement.
5. Click Process....
6. Click Add Licenses Now....
7. Click OK.

5. Click OK to indicate that you have read and agree to the EULA enclosed with this product.

Insight Control server provisioning licenses

Insight Control server provisioning, an alternative to HP Insight Control server deployment, is
licensed as part of Insight Control, eliminating the additional licensing step that is required by
Insight Control server deployment.
HP Insight Control server deployment is no longer selected by default when HP Insight Control or
the Matrix Operating Environment suite is selected for installation.

Applying an Insight Control license to the servers you want to manage 15

To continue using Insight Control server provisioning after the first 60-days, only licensed users
should register by selecting Register to receive the Activation Key, and then follow the instructions.
Trial users must purchase an Insight Control license before they can activate.
If your Insight Control server provisioning appliance is not connected to an external network,
register at http://www.hp.com/go/register-ic-provisioning.
For additional information on Insight Control server provisioning, see www.hp.com/go/
icserverprovisioning.

Adding and applying licenses for Insight Control server deployment

A license enables a server, either a physical server or a virtual machine, to be deployed and
managed by the Insight Control Server software. One license is required for each server being
managed.
After a license is applied to a server, it cannot be removed or transferred to another server. This
includes a server blade that is installed using the Rip-and-Replace procedure. The replacement
server automatically uses the original server license for your convenience. However, to be legally
licensed, a separate license must be purchased for each server.

11 Obtaining automatic software updates from HP
To update managed servers with the most current software, HP SIM provides software update
capabilities that use the HP Version Control Repository Manager (VCRM) and the HP Version
Control Agent (VCA).
By using these applications, HP SIM provides a single view of the software status for managed
ProLiant or Integrity servers, and it can update software and firmware on those servers through its
powerful query and task features. Updates can be scheduled and applied to specific sets of servers
based on predetermined criteria, including applying updates only to systems that require an update.
The VCRM manages the repository that stores the latest HP Support Packs providing the latest
software for your servers. By default, the VCRM is installed on the HP SIM CMS, however, you
can specify a custom directory or a server location. The VCRM and the repository must be located
on the same server.
The VCRM catalogs system software and firmware that is stored in the VCRM repository. The
software and firmware can be manually downloaded from HP directly to the file system, or you
can use the VCRM to automatically download software or manually upload software through any
web client.
Software is organized into groups by function and operating system. You can view detailed
information about each piece of software by clicking the software component name. The VCRM
also enables you to create customized groupings of software, which can then serve as a system
software baseline for the entire managed environment or a subset of your environment.
The VCA is an HP Insight Management Agent that enables you to view the HP software and
firmware that is installed on a system. The VCA can be configured to point to a repository being
managed by the VCRM, allowing easy version comparison and software updates from the repository
to the system on which the VCA is installed.
The VCRM and the VCA are integrated with the HP System Management Homepage (SMH), which
is the standard single-server management tool. HP SIM also uses the VCRM and VCA to facilitate
software versioning, updates, and tasks related to it.

13 Backing up and restoring a CMS
If your CMS environment becomes lost or corrupted, it might be necessary to restore the environment
from a backup copy.
HP has published a white paper that contains step-by-step instructions for defining backup and
recovery procedures for HP Insight Management products running on a Microsoft Windows-based
CMS. The white paper, Backing up and restoring HP Insight Software Central Management System
(Windows), is available at the following web site:
http://www.hp.com/go/insightmanagement/docs
HP recommends that you follow the instructions in this white paper to periodically perform a full
backup of your CMS. This white paper describes the backup and restoration of a same system for
fault insurance purposes only. It does not apply to system migration or software upgrades.
In addition to describing full backups, the white paper covers the following topics:
• How to quiesce the Insight Management environment before performing a backup.
• Backing up the Insight Management files, directories, and databases that contain user
changeable state and configuration data. This partial backup process can be performed
between full backups.
• Restoring the environment.
• Completing the recovery process, which defines a set of best practices to re-synchronize the
environment after the data has been restored.
The recovery process requires the mxsync utility to be installed on the CMS. The mxsync
utility is included in the HP Insight Management download package or DVD and is installed
through the Insight Management Installer wizard.
To successfully restore the Insight Management files, the CMS must be running the same version
of the software that was running when the full system backup was performed. HP recommends
performing a full system backup prior to updating software on the CMS and immediately after you
finish the update.
HP also recommends that you periodically test your backup and restore procedures in a
non-production environment.

User name and password not accepted

If HP SIM was previously installed with a password that is not accepted by Insight Management,
change the user name and password to include only the following characters:
• Upper and lower case alphabetic characters
• Numbers 0 (zero) through 9
• Special characters such as the underscore ( _ ), dollar sign ($), ampersand (&), caret (^),
percent sign (%), number sign (#), equals sign (=), left back quote ( `), tilde (~), pipe ( | ), less
than sign ( <), greater than sign (>), and period ( . )

IMPORTANT: Do not use a dollar sign ($) as the first character in a password. Do not use a
space as the last character in a password.
See also “CMS Reconfigure Tool” (page 10).

Enhanced reports are not visible in HP Systems Insight Manager

At times, you may be unable to see links to some or all enhanced reports. This can happen when
the timestamp on a report is not synchronized with the current time on the CMS server. To make
the report links visible, try the following:
• For a CMS installed on Windows
1. Open the file
<SIM_install_directory>/config/preload-plugins/62/addfiles/reports.xml
2. Change the timestamp of the reports.xml file.

An easy way to change a report.xml timestamp:

Open the file, add a space to the end of the file, and save it.

3. At the command prompt, execute mxconfigrefresh.

• For a CMS installed on HP-UX or Linux

1. Open the file
/etc/opt/mx/config/preload-plugins/62/addfiles/reports.xml
2. Change the timestamp of the reports.xml file.
3. At the command prompt, execute mxconfigrefresh.
Assuming this was the problem, links to the reports should now appear in the Reports menu.
This problem can also happen on an HP-UX or Linux CMS after upgrading from Systems Insight
Manager 5.3.1 to Systems Insight Manager 6.0, 6.1, or 6.2
To repair this problem, on the CMS:
1. Execute mxstop from the command line interface.
2. Go to /opt/mx/jboss/server/hpsim/work/jboss.web/localhost and delete the
CrystalReports directory.

User name and password not accepted 31

3. Change the timestamp of the reports.xml file:
a. For an upgrade to SIM 6.0, change the reports.xml file in
/etc/opt/mx/config/preload/60/addfiles/
b. For an upgrade to SIM 6.1, change the reports.xml file in
/etc/opt/mx/config/preload/60/addfiles/
c. For an upgrade to SIM 6.2, change the reports.xml file in
/etc/opt/mx/config/preload/62/addfiles/
4. Execute mxstart.
Assuming this was the problem, links to the reports should now appear in the Reports menu.
