Financial Literacy-Course Syllabus Course Description Financial Literacy is a full-year course designed

for 10th, 11th & 12th graders. The purpose of the course is to prepare students to make sound
financial decisions. It seeks to develop students’ skills and knowledge in money management;
spending and credit; saving and investing; becoming a critical consumer; financial responsibility and
decision making; and risk management and insurance. Additionally, students will participate in an
online simulation that replicates real-world budgeting and personal-finance decision making. Course
Overview Throughout this course, the following topics will be covered: ● Careers ● Taxes ● Checking
● Savings ● Paying for College ● Types of Credit ● Managing Credit ● Investing ● Insurance ●
Budgeting Instruction Instruction will focus on hands-on activities as well as lecture, group
discussion, use of technology, and other methods. Students will have the opportunity to work both
individually and as part of a small group to complete assignments. Community resources will be
accessed by inviting guest speakers to share their knowledge of the subject matter. Course
Assessment Various assessment tools including worksheets, learning activities, reflection writing
assignments and tests will be utilized to assess student knowledge. Financial simulations that
emulate the constraints typical American households encounter when managing their finances will
be used throughout the school year. Grading Procedures Marking Period Grading: Projects and Tests
60% Classwork 40% Final Grading: Trimester 1 30% Trimester 2 30% Trimester 3 30% Final Exam 10%
Grading Scale: A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 F 59 and below Supplies Needed Each student will
need a three-ring binder with notebook paper. Activities, assignments and project outlines can be
three-hole punched for organization. A writing utensil (pen/pencil) will be required daily.
