1. INTRODUCTION
These operating instructions contain important information on the use of the product. Carry out these
instructions carefully and precisely. This helps to avoid hazards, downtime and repair costs whilst also
increasing the reliability and service life of the product.
Keep these instructions in a safe place for the entire life of the product.
If the product is transferred to a new owner, these instructions and all associated documents are to be
passed on to the new owner.
The meaning and appearance of safety symbols used in these operating instructions are as follows.
The text after the signal word “WARNING!” contains important information,
which must be followed to protect the user from injury.

Installation of the damper in equipment other than the designated system may cause
damage to the system and to the damper.

5. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Geislinger's vibration damper is a spring-coupled torsional vibration damper with hydraulic damping.
Radially arranged spring blades (1) transmit the elasti c torque from the inner part of the damper to the
outer part. Torsional vibration is damped at the sa me time by oil displacement between the spring
chambers.
The spring packs (1) and intermediate pieces (2) are clamped together using a using a clamping ring (3).
The inner ends of the spring packs (1) reach into the axial grooves of the inner star (9). The chambers
(A, B), which are formed by the intermediate pieces (2) and the spring packs (1), are filled with oil. If
torque is applied to the damper, the two parts of the damper (external and internal) will be twisted
against each other. The spring blades (1) will be deflected during this process. This changes the volume
of the oil in chambers A and B. The oil will be displaced from one chamber into the adjoining one through
a narrow gap. The resultant oil flow resistance delays the relative movement of both parts of the damper
(outer and inner) and dampens the torsional vibrations.
The two plates (5,7) of the outer part of the damper and the seals fitted in these hold the oil in the
damper so that the required working pressure can be built up.

The lifting tackle must be mounted and used in accordance with the instructions in
the lifting tackle manufacturer's operating instructions

CHECKING THE TAPPED LIFTING HOLES BEFORE ASSEMBLING THE LIFTING TACKLE
Before assembling the lifting tackle check the relevant tapped lifting hole to make sure that it is suitable
to use.
These are both tapped holes for screws used for other purposes and tapped lifting holes.

Never lift the product using only one connection point for the lifting tackle. maximum = 45°
Lifting examples

All metal parts are protected against corrosion and sealed in polythene film.
All parts are packed in crates made of soft wood or are placed on wooden pallets.
NOTE:
Special packaging can also be used for the dampers in line with the customer's requirements.
NOTE:
Contact Geislinger or a Geislinger service centre to ask for data sheets on packaging/special packaging.
STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS
Do not damage the packaging and preserving agents.
Do not stack the products or place heavy parts on top of them.
Store the product in dry conditions: max. permissible relative humidity 85%.
Avoid variations in temperature of more than 25° Celsius.
Make sure that the permissible temperature application range for seals as per the attached data
sheet is adhered to during storage.
If the temperature rises above or falls below the permissible temperature application
range for seals during storage, it may damage the seals and then subsequently
reduce the service life of the damper.

8. UNP ACKING
GENERAL
The damper, damper components and connecting parts may be delivered separately or packed
individually. Each package may contain separately packed tools or small components (e.g. screws,
sealing rings, lifting tackle, etc.). Do not throw these away with the packaging.
WARNING!
Please see Chapter 17 (Operating conditions) for information on requirements for problem-free operation
of the damper and information on the permissible operating position of the damper.
PREPARATION
Check the oil feed and return bores to make sure that they are clean and oil can flow through. Remove
any masking tape.
Remove the rust inhibitor (e.g. Anticorit) from all flange-mounting surfaces and centring shoulders.
CAUTION!
O-rings on the flanges (for oil supply and venting) must be well greased and undamaged.
INSTALLATION
Do not damage the centring shoulders, seals and sealing surfaces during the
mounting operation.
CAUTION!
Remove lifting tackle and ancillary installation tools (if present) from the damper and
keep them for use later.
CAUTION!
Supply oil to the damper with the pre-lubrication pump until oil escapes from the oil circulation bores.
See the assembly diagram for the position and number of oil circulation bores.
If no oil escapes from one or several oil circulation bores, follow the troubleshooting
procedures indicated in Chapter 16.
CAUTION!
An additional thread for connecting a pressure gauge is provided on the majority of dampers at flange (5)
or side plate (7). As a result, the oil pressure in the damper can also be measured when the engine is
not running by connecting a pressure gauge.
Remove the damper from the system, following the safety instructions as well as the transport and lifting
instructions indicated in the operating instructions and the assembly diagram.
Do not damage the centring shoulders, seals and sealing surfaces during
removal.
CAUTION!
Place the damper on the flange plate (5). (The damper shaft is vertical.)
Only open the main bolts (750) if it is absolutely necessary (e.g. for a complete
service).
If there is no centring ring between the middle piece (1,2,3) and flange (5) or the side
plate (7), the concentricity setting of the components in the outer part will be lost.
Make sure how the outer part is to be reassembled see Chapter 13 – Assembling
damper.
CAUTION! If the components are to be reassembled using depth gauge measurements, it is
essential to mark the position of the side plate (7), middle piece group (1,2,3), the
flange (5) and the inner star (9) in relationship to each other beforehand. See
Chapter 13 – Assembling damper.
Place the damper on the flange plate (5). (The damper shaft is vertical.)
Open and remove the main bolts (750).
Take off the side plate (7).
Remove inner star (9).
Remove the middle piece of the damper (1, 2, 3).
The concentricity of the inner diameter of all intermediate pieces (2) is to be within the following values:

When adjusting concentricity do not damage the inner surfaces of the intermediate
pieces.
CAUTION!
If the stated values for roundness are not achieved, contact Geislinger or a
Geislinger service centre.
CAUTION!
Oil supply and ventilation holes must be free of dirt and contamination.
Thoroughly remove any carbon deposits that may be present in the spring
chambers.
CAUTION!
Fit O-rings in their relevant grooves, ensuring that they are not damaged.
Fit new disc springs.
Renew all bolts up to and including thread size M20.
Bolts larger than M20 may only be reused if the following criteria are met.
The bolt head must not be damaged.
The bolt thread must not be damaged or stretched.
The surface on which the bolt head rests must not be damaged.
The bolt must be cleaned impeccably. Only use LOCTITE CLEANER to remove deposits of
LOCTITE.
CAUTION!
CAUTION!
Coat the inner star running surfaces of O-ring item 850 with Klüber PETAMO GHY 133N paste or an
equivalent product.
Coat the rest of the surface of the inner star (9) with ANTICORIT OHK 380A or an equivalent
product.
The process is the same as described for dismantling the outer part but in reverse order. In addition, the
following instructions must be observed
NOTE:
If the damper is equipped with centring shoulders on the flange (5) and a side plate (7) to the clamping
ring (3), the components do not have to be centred in accordance with Points A or B.
Position the flange plate (5) on the work top. (O-rings are visible.)
Place the middle piece (1, 2, 3) of the damper on the flange plate (5).
Position the side plate (7) on the middle piece of the damper.
Coat the disc springs (810) on both sides with an adequate amount of LOCTITE. (See assembly
diagram for type.)
The disc springs and the matching contact surfaces must be free of grease and
dry.
CAUTION!
Treat the threads of the main bolts (750) in accordance with the mounting instructions on the
assembly diagram.
Fit the main bolts (750) according to the installation instructions given in the assembly diagram.
A) Assembling outer part with the help of a centring stage (preferred variant)
Rest the flange plate (5) on the centring stage. (O-rings are visible.)
As an alternative to the centring table, a horizontal lathe can also be used for centring the
components.
Place the middle piece (1, 2, 3) of the damper on the flange plate (5).
Position the side plate (7) on the middle piece of the damper.
Centre the flange (5), damper middle piece (1,2,3) and side plate (7) with a dial gauge in accordance
with the concentricity tolerances provided in the assembly drawing.
Coat the disc springs (810) on both sides with an adequate amount of LOCTITE. (See assembly
diagram for type.)
The disc springs and the matching contact surfaces must be free of grease and
dry.
CAUTION!
Treat the threads of the main bolts (750) in accordance with the mounting instructions on the
assembly diagram.
Fit the main bolts (750) according to the installation instructions given in the assembly diagram.
Recheck the concentricity tolerances given in the assembly diagram to ensure that they are correct.
B) Assembling the outer part with the aid of depth gauge measurements
Before dismantling measure the position of the side plate (7), middle piece group (1,2,3), flange (5)
and inner star (9) in relationship to each other. See the sketch below.
The depth gauge measurements must be taken at four points, each offset at an angle of 90° to each
other.
The surfaces at these points must be cleaned thoroughly beforehand. Depth gauges with display
accuracy of 0.01 mm must be used for measuring purposes.
The measuring positions must be marked with a scriber and numbered 1 – 4.
The damper can now be dismantled.
When the components are reassembled, the components must be aligned to the same depth
measurement.
Reassemble the flange (5), middle piece group, inner star (9) and side plate (7), observing the
marking. Roughly align the parts with each other beforehand. Use an aluminium hammer to help with
this task. It is an advantage to use an assembly lever (see sketches for design and how to use)
which can be used to adjust the parts in the hole for the main bolt.
Fit four main bolts in the holes adjacent to the measuring points in each case, without using Loctite.
(See ** in the assembly sketch below.)
Tighten the four main bolts uniformly and in sequence in small steps until the stop is reached.
The disc springs must lie flat and fit tightly. In order to check that the parts have not slipped while the
bolts are being tightened, it is a good idea to fit four depth gauges (using magnetic feet), each
opposite each other, on the flange (5) and side plate (7).
Then slacken off each of the four main bolts by a quarter of turn.
Adjust the parts in relation to each other to the measured depth.
Tolerance = +/-0.02 mm for bearing-mounted dampers (bronze bearing (15) on flange (5) and side
plate (7) provided)
Tolerance = +/-0.04 mm for dampers without bearings.
Tighten the four main bolts again in small stages until they fit tightly and mark them.
Coat the disc springs (810) on both sides with an adequate amount of LOCTITE. (See assembly
diagram for type.)
The disc springs and the matching contact surfaces must be free of grease and
dry.
CAUTION!
Treat the threads of the main bolts (750) in accordance with the mounting instructions on the
assembly diagram.
Fit all remaining main bolts (750) according to the installation instructions given in the assembly
diagram.
Slacken off the marked four main bolts and then fit them in accordance with the assembly
instructions.
Recheck the concentricity tolerances and then the depth measurements given in the assembly
diagram to ensure that they are correct.

If permissible wear between servicing intervals has been exceeded by more than
50%, subsequent servicing intervals are to be shortened accordingly. For this, it is
assumed that wear is at a linear rate.
Servicing frequencies also depend on the specific conditions of use in each case.
NOTE:
If the damper is serviced and monitored on a regular basis, it facilitates long-term
planning and spare parts can be ordered in good time.
TEST EQUIPMENT
Use a measuring wedge to take measurements. The measuring wedge must be supplied by the
customer, if it is not provided by Geislinger.

in the assembly diagram or in the appendix.

MEASURING WEAR
Place the measuring wedge between the tips of the spring leaves on the base of the groove.
Keep applying pressure to the measuring wedge (either by hand or using a rubber hammer) until the tips
of the spring leaves make contact with the flanks of the groove on both sides.
The further it is possible to press down the measuring wedge, the greater the extent to which the groove
and spring are worn.
NOTE:
Half the length of the wedge means the unit is half worn and three-quarters of the length of the wedge
means that the unit is three-quarters worn.
If the whole length of the measuring wedge or more can be inserted (= max. marking) between the ends
of the spring leaves, the inner star and the springs must be renewed.
Bad oil quality or an inadequate supply of oil at the spring ends leads to severe wear
very quickly.

If no max. permissible figures for wear or bearing clearances are given on the assembly diagram,
contact Geislinger or a Geislinger service centre.

If the operating conditions listed below do not appear in either the assembly diagram
or the operating instructions, please discuss with Geislinger.
CAUTION!
The damper must be installed so that, in its normal operating position, the rotating shaft of the damper is
in a horizontal position.
Operation of the damper in a certain tilted position for a sustained period is not
permissible. However, short-term displacements (for example, when transporting by
sea or on account of the movement of a vehicle) are permissible.
CAUTION!
The stated oil pressure (combined with the oil flow volume) is to be taken to be the required oil pressure.
If no oil pressure (combined with the oil flow volume) is specified, the damper is to be supplied with the
required oil pressure of min. 2.5 bar gauge pressure (3.5 bar absolute).
If the specified oil pressure required is not obtained, please consult Geislinger.
CAUTION!
The specified oil flow volume refers to the required oil pressure.
If the damper is supplied with oil at a higher pressure than the stated oil pressure, the
oil flow volume increases accordingly.
CAUTION!
The stated oil temperature and viscosity corresponds to the values used in the design TVC. If Geislinger
has not been provided with any data at the time of design, the calculation is based on usual figures for
the industry. The oil temperature and viscosity is either shown on the assembly diagram or can be
obtained from Geislinger.
The permissible oil and ambient temperatures result from the oil viscosity, which was defined when the
damper was designed. The limit values can be found in the relevant design calculation or can be
obtained from Geislinger (TVC Department).

Before handling the threaded parts using the assembly tools, the contact surfaces must be cleaned
carefully and thoroughly.

Oxide layers
If the contact surfaces have oxidised, first carefully remove the oxide layers mechanically, for
example using a wire brush.
After removing the oxide layers (if present), all contact surfaces must be cleaned and degreased
thoroughly.
Isoparaffin or acetone can be used as agents for cleaning and degreasing.
If Loctite is used being for the assembly, degreased, cleaned contact surfaces must not
afterwards be touched with bare hands.
If dirty or if coming into contact with grease from hands, the relevant contact surfaces
must be cleaned again!
Before applying the assembly aids, the contact surfaces must be dried thoroughly!
Loctite products should always be used within the processing time specified by Loctite.
These processing times can be found in the instructions for use for the relevant Loctite products
being used. Do not exceed the maximum processing times permitted! Try and keep the processing
times as short as possible.
Read first!
Before applying the assembly aid, the bearing threaded length "X" (see diagram) should be
calculated for the parts being screwed together. This threaded length should then be wetted with the
assembly aid across the entire area. In terms of the quantity, use only so much that only small
quantities of excess assembly aid overflows after assembly.
A test assembly is recommended to be able to estimate the amount required.
With sealing unions in particular, ensure that the threaded gap is completely filled with sealant. For
thread size M16 and over, the threaded hole or the nut thread should also normally be coated with
the assembly aid.

When using the assembly aids under washers or screw heads, wet the surface so that after the
assembly process is complete for the screw, the contact surfaces (see diagram) is completely
covered with the assembly aid.
When using on washers, apply to both the front and the back.
In terms of the quantity, use only so much that only small quantities of excess assembly aid
overflows after assembly.
A test assembly is recommended to be able to estimate the amount required.

3. ASSEMBLY
The screws should only be tightened at the torques and in accordance with the guidelines given on
the assembly diagram.
Note on washers
Disc springs and sometimes NORD-LOCK are normally only used as washers for securing
screws where applicable. These should be assembled as follows.
Tightening process
The screws should normally be tightened crosswise, i.e. opposite pairs of screws should be
tightened immediately after one another.
The assembly should always be carried out according to the same diagram, as described in the
example below for a twelve-point division.
The torque values, the tightening of the screw and the application area for the assembly aid are
described in the assembly guidelines in the assembly diagram.

4. AFTER ASSEMBLY
Immediately after the screw assembly is complete, the excess residue of the assembly aids,
especially Loctite residue, should be removed

5. RE-USE
If screw connections secured or sealed using Loctite are unfastened, the any old Loctite reside
remaining on the screws should be completely removed mechanically, for example using a wire
brush.
With threaded connections and internal threads (e.g. with nuts), old Loctite residue should also be
removed completely.
All washers from unfastened screw connections should normally be replaced by new
washers!
Afterwards, all parts should be prepared for re-assembly (see chapters 1 to 4).
