1) What are my most important takeaways from this class?

This course has helped me to learn about team dynamics. It helps me to know about the
complexity of teams. As in today’s organizations are becoming increasingly complex and
consist of dynamic tasks with interdependence which is well suited to teamwork (Levi, 2014). In
this course, I learned about the multiple embeddedness of team complexity and the impact of
time on it. Multiple embeddedness in the team is formed by three-level, such as individual, team,
and organization. Individual behaviors and cognition serve as the base in the multiple
embeddedness of the team. When these individuals work together to perform a task that it will
form a team. All individuals of this team will share their skills, idea, and cognition to perform the
task. At this level of embeddedness, the team shared the goals and milestones. At the
organizational level of multiple embeddedness, there are more than one team is working. To run
the organization effectively, it is imperative to collaborate with the teams of different
departments in the organization. Each team has a responsibility to coordinate with other teams
and organize meetings at any appropriate interval.
I have learned about the impact of time on multiple embeddedness of team complexity. It is
segregated in two approaches (1) contextual top-down effects and (2) emergent bottom-up
effects. In contextual top-down effect, we studied the effects from organizational to the team as a
supportive organizational culture helps teams to be more innovative. Then we studied the effect
of the team to individuals as if a team has a climate of psychological safety them individuals tend
to be more creative. As for emergent bottom-up effects are concerned, it will lead from
individual to team, as the individual tolerance to ambiguity can affect the team function, and
with repetitious interaction between individuals will create better coordination in the team. In the
next phase, the team mechanism to coordinate with other departments of the organization can
impact the organization's function. As the repetitious interaction between teams of the
organization will create an efficient cross-department information sharing system.
During this course, I have learned about the different approaches to team composition. It
includes the individual characteristics approach. I also come to know about the Jigsaw-puzzle
approach, which is an effective method of learning in teams. Another approach of team
composition is based on the Big Five personality traits. Within this framework, a person’s
personality is described by the five factors extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness,
emotional stability, and openness to experience. Each of these factors predisposes a person to
behave in a certain way (Wille & Fruyt, 2014). During this course, I come to know a new
approach to team composition, which is based on the team role. It is developed by Mathieu et al,
in 2015. It is known as team role experience and orientation(TREO). These roles are categorized
in the organizer, doer, challenger, innovator, team builder, and connector.
2) How will I use them as a team member and/or leader in my current or future job?
The ability to work effectively in a group or team is becoming a necessity for a successful career
and it helps to contribute meaningfully towards the organization. While studying the various
aspects and elements of the team dynamics. I have learned about the multiple embeddedness and
time regarding the complexity of the team. This concept will help me in my future job as a team
member or team leader by enacting team norms, coordination among team members, exchanging
information and learn how to tackle the conflict management in a team.
I will use the approaches to team composition which I have learned during this course in my
future job as a team member or as a leader of the team. It will help me to analyze the
organizational context in which I am working. I will access what characteristics are required to
perform a specific task. Once I will access it then I will be in a better position to form a team as a
team leader or work effectively with other members of the team as a team member. I will access
the individual on the basis of their characteristic. The big five personality traits will help to know
the individual characters that either this person is introvert or extrovert, either show
agreeableness and possess the openness to experience characteristics. This Big five personality
model also helps me to know about myself that what characteristics I possess and which role
suits me better in the team as a team member or what approach should I adopt to become an
effective leader of the team. I have also learned about the team role experience and orientation
(TREO) model during this course. It will help me to assign the roles to the team members
according to their experience. It will also assist me to access what level of experience is required
to perform a task and what skills or characteristics can be trained or developed after hiring the
team members. I will compose a team by considering all these factors.
