Question 1

The beam of figure Q1 is subjected to the loadings shown. Assume the support at
B is a pin and A is a roller.

(a) Calculate the reactions at A and B. (14 marks)

(b) Draw the shear force diagram of the beam showing the key values.Establish
the position of the point of zero shear. (18 marks)

(c) Draw the bending moment diagram of the beam showing the key values,
including the values of the maximum hogging moment, and maximum
sagging moment. (18 marks)

Question 2
(a) The cantilever beam of figure Q2 has a fixed support at A and free at B. It is
made of a universal beam 406x178x60 UB of mild steel. It is loaded by a
uniformly distributed unfactored variable load of 5kN/m which is acting
throughout its 5m span. An unfactored permanent point load of magnitude
F(kN) is applied at B. Determine the maximum value of the point load, F,
such that the deflection at B does not exceed the maximum limit, given that
the beam has no brittle finishes. (35 marks)

(b) A short reinforced concrete column measures 350mm x 450mm and

contains four 20mm diameter high yield reinforcing bars. If the concrete
characteristic strength is 40N/mm2, determine the ultimate axial design
capacity of the column, and specify suitable links. (15 marks)

Question 3
(a) The cantilever beam of figure Q3 has a fixed support at A and free at B. It is
made of a universal beam 406x178x60 UB of mild steel. It is loaded by a
uniformly distributed unfactored variable load of 5kN/m which is acting
throughout its 5m span. An unfactored permanent point load of magnitude
17.7kN is applied at B. Carry out the necessary calculations of bending and
shear capacities to check whether the section 406x178x60 UB is suitable for
this beam at the ultimate limit state, assuming that the top flange is fully
restrained against lateral torsional buckling. (40 marks)

(b) A 300mm square concrete column supports a characteristic permanent axial

load of 300kN; and a characteristic variable axial load of 300kN.
Determine the dimensions of a suitable un-reinforced concrete pad
foundation if the underlying soil is stiff clay. (10 marks)
