Pavement & Foundation Engineering Final Exam

This document contains instructions and 5 questions for a civil engineering exam on pavement and foundation engineering. Question 1 asks to define the settlement profiles of flexible and rigid foundations with sketches, and calculate the total settlement of a raft foundation under given soil conditions. Question 2 asks to calculate the total settlement of a footing over 5 years using the Schmertmann method and define settlement conditions. Question 3 asks to calculate the total load capacity of a group of 9 piles arranged in a square pattern in soft clay, given pile dimensions, soil properties, and design factors. Question 4 asks to calculate the safe load of a driven pile in sand, given pile dimensions, soil properties, and a water table depth,

Question # 01 (2+8)

a) Define the profile of Flexible and Rigid foundation settlement with neat sketches?
b) A 50 KN/m load was imposed on the 10×15 meter Raft foundation constructed by using M20
concrete. The top point of the foundation was at +0 meter ground level. The depth of the
foundation was 2.5 meter. The groundwater table was present at -2.5m. The first layer of soil
was present at -7m and the second layer of soil was present at -19m. Calculate the total
settlement of the foundation and draw a complete profile of the settlement.

Question # 02 (08)
Calculate the total settlement of the footing for 5 years. (Schmertmann Method), define the settlement
conditions. (Es=3.5qc)

Question # 03 (08)
A group of nine piles arranged in a square pattern with the diameter of the pile is 25 cm, and the length
of the pile is 10 meters is used as the foundation in soft clay deposit taking the unconfined compressive
strength of the clay is 120 KN/m2 and the spacing of the pile is 1000 mm c/c. Find the total load capacity
of the group piles assuming Nc=9, α=0.75, and the factor of safety is 2.5.

Question # 04 (10)
A pile of 450mm diameter and 10.5 m length is driven in a sand deposit having C=0, φ=300, γ=16.5
KN/m2, γsat =18.5 KN/m2, considering critical depth to be 15 times the diameter of the pile, Nq=35,
k=3.2, φ=200. Calculate the safe load that the pile can carry if the water table is located at a depth of
2.5 m from the ground level while taking the factor of safety 2.
Question # 05 (6+8)

a) In normally consolidated clay stratum of 3-meter thickness has two permeable layers at its top
and bottom. The liquid limit of the clay is 3.6%, and the clay initial void ratio is 0.82, the
overburden pressure at the middle of clay is 2 kg/sq.cm. Due to the construction of the new
building, the pressure increased by 1.5 Kg/sq.cm. Compute the settlement of the building.
b) The subsoil profile of a proposed site of construction is shown below, a square footing of 2*2
meter carries a load of 1000 KN and is laid with its base at 1-meter depth below ground surface
assuming that post-construction settlement in the sand is negligible. Determine the
consolidation settlement of clay layer on account of construction. There is geological evidence
that clay is NC, use 2:1 for load dispersion to estimate the stress increase in the clay layer.
