the risk?
Basic Drone Operation
Introduction

This material aims to provide all the

information needed by drone operators to
always operate safely.

Before any operation, it is recommended

to always do careful planning and risk
assessment. All of this is done so that the
operation runs legally, safely and
efficiently. Therefore, every operation is
required to follow the procedures or SOP
(Standard Operating Procedure) that exists.
Flight Planning Assessment

Before conducting drone operations, it is very important

for the operator to make the best preparation and
planning. In this way, the operation not only runs
smoothly and safely, but also avoids dissatisfaction from
the client.

Site Assessment

For operating areas where there are many obstacles, it is a

good idea to check the area before the operating day. For a
simple operation area, checking can be done on the same
day.

Here are some considerations that are usually checked:

• Wire and cable above.
• Poles and chimneys
• Buildings, buildings and vegetation
• Risk of turbulence and other risks related to weather
• Birds and other animals
• Possible hazards from the crowd
• Antennas and radio interference
• Other airspace users
Pre-Flight
Common things on the pre-flight checklist can be the
following:
• Weather assessment has been carried out
• An operation permit has been received
• Equipment needed is available
• The eligibility of the UAV used (General Condition,
System Checks, Fail Safe, Battery Condition, etc.)
• Payload / camera position, functionality and safety.
• The battery or fuel is fully charged.
In-Flight
An operator must follow the procedure from the start of the
aircraft being turned on, take-off, until the aircraft makes a
complete stop, and the engine shuts down after landing.

Flight Procedures
Battery Status
Visual Line of Sight
Post-Flight
Post-Flight Checklist

As in the other flight phases, in the post-flight phase it is

also highly recommended to make a checklist to ensure
all necessary actions have been taken. Keeping a log after
each operation can help to monitor and maintain the
aircraft. The log can contain information such as:

• Total operator flight hours

• Total flight hours
• Battery flight hours
• Repairs made to the aircraft
Aircraft Crash Procedures
When an accident occurs, the main thing to protect
is the operator and other people, and then as soon
as possible to ensure that there will be no other
victims.

When the situation is under control, it is important

for the operator to retrieve as much data as
possible.

Inspection Using Drone. Why?
Conventional method on vertical structure survey has been done by inspector by
climbing the object. Especially on flare survey, it is not only require a lot of work on
safety procedure but also take hours for facility to shut down.

Using Drone
○ Able to reach areas difficult to access
○ Preventive maintenance planning
○ Inspectors can avoid dangerous situation
○ Quick deployment
○ Less risk to human
○ Reduce downtime of facility
○ Reduce Cost
○ Better records
Application in Inspection
Structure Inspection (Onshore & offshore)
○ Visual inspection
to identify anomaly (defect, corrosion, dent,
crack, etc.) on the object’s surface
○ Thermal inspection
Using thermal imaging camera to identify heat
anomaly on the required object, usually on flare
system
Object :
- Flare system (flare stack, tip, pilot tip, KO Drum, etc.)
- Flare boom
- Derrick
- Crane tower / boom
- Radio / telecommunication tower
- Under deck platform
- Splash zone, Bridge
High Resolution Visual
Inspection to Minimize
Human Risk
We cannot always rely on human
visual sight to see how the
condition of hazardous facilities
such as flare stack and underdeck
without facing huge human risk.
Therefore, AeroGeosurvey try to
tackle this issue by providing
visual inspection using drone,
which can reduce human risk
significantly without losing any
important information to be
captured. Thermal imagery can
also be provided to show more
insights regarding the
performance of the facility.
Application in Inspection
Confined Space Inspection (Onshore & offshore)
○ Visual inspection
to identify anomaly (defect, corrosion, dent,
crack, etc.) on the object’s surface
○ Thermal inspection
Using thermographic camera to identify heat
anomaly or heat spread on the required
object, usually on flare system
Object :
- Onshore Storage tank
- Floating storage tank
- Pipe rack
Application in Inspection
Ultrasonic Test Thickness
The newest technology is to do tank wall and beam thickness using Ultrasonic
Test drone. UT thickness measurement is only requires 2 person to go inside
the tank and surely does not require any scaffold to be installed

Object :
- Onshore storage Tank
Ultrasonic Testing for
Tall Objects without
Rope Access
Now, not only visual inspection
using high resolution and
thermal imagery, but also Non-
Destructive Testing (NDT)
especially Ultrasonic Testing
ND (UT) can now be performed by
using drone. By having this
solution, the process can be
T improved in terms of time and
safety of the worker.

This solution can be used for

onshore storage tank,
especially the internal part of
the tank. Besides testing, the
drone is also equipped with
blaster to eliminate soft rust
and liquid penetrant.

Oil Spill Response

What is an Oil Spill?

- Seepage of hydrocarbon into the environment
- Can be on land, sea surface, deep sea, etc

How can Oil Spills happen?

- Directly from the reservoir / wellhead
- Pipelines & delivery systems
- From vessels (FPSOs, Tankers, etc)
Example of leakage from vessel

- Full extent of leakage can be

difficult to spot from the
vessel

- Leakage from vessel

identified by UAV team when
performed regular inspection
enabled client to intervene
early.
Declining Trend of Reported Oil Spills

- From 79 cases
per year to 6
cases per year
now.

- Even one spill

is too many.

- Reality is that
spill will
continue to
happen.
Global Distribution of Reported Oil Spills

- From 79 cases
per year to 6
cases per year
now.

- Even one spill

is too many.

spill will
continue to
happen.
Why Use Drone?

Quick Response
Applications :
- Identification of location
- Identification of surface area
- Type of Oil Sheen -> Surface Area
- Emulsification behavior of Oil
- Dispersants deployed in 24 hrs

Correct Response
Applications :
- To determine severity
- Type response
- Number of vessels required
Types of Sheen & Importance

Drones must be capable of identifying colour of Sheen / Slick

As oil spreads on water, the oil slick changes in colour from black or brown to a
rainbow of colours and finally to the silver or silver-grey of sheen.

This enables estimation of thickness of hydrocarbon on the surface.

With the thickness and estimated surface area affected, we can estimate
volume of spill.

Early identification is key for emergency response planning.

Types of Sheen
Terra Drone in Oil Spill Response Exercise

- Low cost demonstration
- To demonstrate feasibility of using UAV for early response planning

Exercise Highlights:
- Dye was used to simulate a small oil spill patch.
- Dye was released in the sea at a predetermined location.
- UAV was deployed to locate the dye.
- 2 vessels were used to deploy a bund to contain the dye.
- UAV was used to track the dye & vessel positions.
- UAV was used to monitor the effectiveness of containment.
UAV Team Operating From Vessel Bow

Positioning is Key

- Optimise communications with UAV

- Aid visual spotting
- Facing direction of spill
- In view of vessel bridge
- In view of incident response commander
UAV Team Coordination with Vessels

Communication is Key to:

- Live feedback to aid vessel movement

- Monitor drifting of “oil patch” and vessel
- Monitor effectiveness of bund
Key Lessons Learned

Drone & Payload configurations is key

- Multirotor based on vessel
- Fixed wing deployed from coastline
- Response time vs drone autonomy

Other considerations :
- Live video feedback to bridge
- Incident response commander must have access to live feed
- Positioning data of UAV must be known at all times to aid locating
- Payload / sensor must be able to detect oil spill
- RGB camera may require UV filter
