Bearing Selection: Intrdouction

Rolling element bearings are well-suited for fan applications due to their low friction and reasonable cost. There are several types of bearings that can be used including ball, spherical roller, and taper roller bearings. Bearing selection depends on factors like operating conditions, load capacity, mounting arrangement, space constraints, cost, and desired life. Deep groove ball bearings are well-suited for ceiling fan applications as they can handle both radial and axial loads with a long life under normal operating conditions.

BEARING SELECTION

INTRDOUCTION:

Fan applications demand quality bearings. Rolling element (or anti-friction) bearings are good selections
for fan applications because they offer low friction and are reasonably priced. Twin City Fan Companies
uses bearings with spherical roller, taper roller and ball shaped rolling elements. Each type has
advantages and disadvantages which will be discussed later in this document.

Bearing Types:

1. Ball Bearings
2. Two-Bearing Housing
3. Adapter Mounted Bearings
4. Spherical Roller Bearings

Bearing Life

Under laboratory conditions with controlled loads and lubrication, bearings fail due to fatigue. Rolling
elements and bearing races eventually start to fail from the repetitive loading and unloading. In theory,
all bearings have a finite life and will eventually fail. Figure 8 shows that as with light bulbs and humans,
as time goes on the probability for the end of life increases. Just as statistical methods can estimate
human life expectancy, they can estimate bearing fatigue life.

BEARING SELECTION:

Bearing applications are very vast depending upon variety of operational and environment conditions.
Bearing type selection is done based on the following:

 The operating condition of machine (Capacity and direction of load).

 Mounting arrangement for the machine.

 Ease of mounting and dismounting of bearings in the machine.

 Space available in the machine.

 Cost of bearings.

 Readily availability of bearings.

 Desired life of bearing.

 Type of lubrication.

Determination of Bearing Type:

 Availability of Bearing space.

o The shaft diameter is first selected by design engineer for the machine and based upon
this bearing bore size is calculated.
o Depending upon direction of load, radial or corresponding bearing type is selected i.e.
Diameter series, Dimension series and width series.

o Depending on above parameters, Bearing like Deep Groove Ball Bearing / Angular
Contact Ball Bearing / Self Alignment Bearing / Cylindrical Roller Bearing / Spherical
Roller bearing / Needle Roller Bearing / Tapered Roller Bearing type is selected.

Load Capacity and Bearing Type:

 Single row deep groove ball bearing – Both Radial and Axial load carrying capacity are almost
same.

 Single row angular contact ball bearing – Axial load carrying capacity is more than Radial load
capacity. These bearings can handle load more than Single row deep groove ball bearing.

 Cylindrical roller bearing – Takes only Radial load but bearing with Rib take slight Axial load.
These bearings can handle Radial load more than Single row angular contact ball bearing.

 Taper roller bearing –  Axial load carrying capacity is more than Radial load capacity. These
bearings can handle load more than Single row angular contact ball bearing.

 Spherical roller bearings – Radial load carrying capacity is more than Axial load capacity. These
bearings can handle more radial load than all above bearings.

Permissible Speed and Bearing Type:

Maximum speed of bearing depends on the following:

 Size of bearing.

 Type of cage.

 Load.

 Lubrication method.

 Heat disposal.

Bearing types ranking from higher to lower speed for common lubrication method.

1 Angular contact ball bearing

2 Deep groove ball bearing

3 Cylindrical roller bearing

4 Needle bearing

5 Taper roller bearing

6 Spherical roller bearing

7 Thrust ball bearing

Rigidity and Bearing Type:

Some elastic deformation accrue in the inner, outer and rolling element of the bearing under load. The
rigidity of bearing = Load on bearing / Amount of Elastic deformation.

As main spindle of machine tool require high rigidity, so, Roller bearings are selected due to their high
rigidity than ball bearings. When extra high rigidity is required, bearings are given pre-load means
negative clearance. Angular contact ball bearing or roller bearings are pre-loaded.

Running accuracy and Bearing Type:

Main spindle of machine tools or Turbo Chargers spindle require high running accuracy, so, high
precision bearings of Class 5, 4 or 2 are used.

For applications require high accuracy, Generally Angular Contact Ball Bearings and Cylindrical Roller
Bearings are used.

For Mathematical Model:

1) Calculate radial and axial forces and determine dia. of shaft. 2) Select proper type of bearing. 3) Start
with extra light series for given diagram go by trial of error method. 4) Find value of basic static capacity
(co) of selected bearing from catalogue. 5) Calculate ratios Fa/VFr and Fa/Co. 6) Calculate values of
radial and thrust factors.(X & Y) from catalogue. 7) For given application find value of load factor Ka from
catalogue. 8) Calculate equivalent dynamic load using relation. Pe = (XVFr + YFA) Ka. 9) Decide expected
life of bearing considering application. Express life in million revolutions L10. 10) Calculate required basic
dynamic capacity for bearing by relation. 11) Check whether selected bearing has req. dynamic capacity,
IF it not select the bearing of next series and repeat procedure from step-4.

The Algorithim for above steps:
