The document is a mid-semester examination for a power electronics course. It contains two questions. Question 1 asks students to (1) classify power semiconductor devices, (2) list characteristics of an ideal fully controllable switch, and (3) analyze voltage, current, and power waveforms for a practical switch. Question 2 asks students to (1) draw waveforms for a diode circuit, (2) analyze waveforms for a diode full-wave rectifier circuit, and (3) calculate angles and average current for a single-phase rectifier given voltage and frequency values. The exam tests students' knowledge of power electronics devices, ideal switch characteristics, circuit analysis skills involving waveforms,

01. The modern power electronics switching devices includes several types including diodes, thyristors,
bipolar junction transistors (BJTs), metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs),
gate turn off (GTO) thyristors, and insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) etc.
a. The power semiconductor devices can be classified into three groups according to their
degree of controllability. Name these groups. [06 Marks]

b. It is desirable to have power electronics switches perform as near as possible to ideal

case. List down four characteristics in a fully controllable switch, those are desirable for
ideal performance. [12 Marks]

c. Practical fully controllable switch and its linear approximated current and voltage
waveforms are shown in Figure 1.1 and Figure 1.2 respectively.
i. By assuming ideal switch, draw the voltage, current and power waveforms.
ii. Derive the approximated expressions for instantaneous switching and conduction
power loss and sketch them.
iii. Determine the total average power dissipated in the circuit during 𝑡 = 0 to 𝑡 = 𝑇
time period. [22 Marks]
