LOADMASTER
INTERRUPTER HEADS

Equipment Overview
All types of disconnector manufactured by MLE can be converted to switch disconnectors
by the addition of MLE Loadmaster interrupter heads.
Interrupter heads are available in two sizes; 12kV and 24/36kV.
Arc interruption within the Loadmaster is achieved by a hard gas generated at high
pressure in the space occupied by the arc column. The hydrogen and carbon dioxide
gases which are generated by thermal action on the acrylic liner acts to de-ionise the gas
produced by the arc and improve its electric strength.

Interruption is caused by a self-generated gas at high pressure in
the space occupied by the arc column. As the interrupter contacts
part an arc is drawn in the plastic-lined bore of the interrupter
body. The arc is squeezed into the annular space between the
clearance of the trailer and the bore. During arcing, energy in the
form of gas is released from the trailer which is moulded from a
compound of acrylic and cellulose powders which, under arcing
conditions, release sufficient proportion of gases and have a low
carbonisation rate since carbon atoms in the molecular structure
are protected by hydrogen atoms, the build-up of the dielectric
strength of the gas is greater than the breakdown strength of the
rate of rise of the recovery voltage and an interruption occurs.

Switch Overview
The MLE range of M type disconnectors is a cost effective, reliable,
and low maintenance design. The use of nickel plated solid copper
switching blades dispenses with the need for flexible cables and
pantographs that historically have been proved to be a source of
trouble. The hinge end contacts are of the self cleaning design with
independent pressure springs on each side. The whole assembly makes
for a very robust and reliable design.

Principal features: • Correct operating rod movement in all mounting positions

• Cost effective design • Self cleaning hinge contacts
• Compact size and low mass • Open slotted base for versatile mounting
• Low operating toque required • No flexible cables of pantographs used
• High fault-making capacity • Long life, low maintenance design

TRIP-ALL PHASE UNIT (T.A.P.)

To overcome the problems associated with ‘single phasing’ caused when only one fuse in a supply blows, MLE
have developed a unique system. The design is designated a ‘Trip-All Phase Unit’ (T.A.P.).
The principle of operation is that in the event that one or more of the T.A.P. fuses blow, the fuse (or fuses) will
swing downwards and strike a tripping bar. The tripping bar will release a spring-charged mechanism which in turn
will open the switch and isolate all three phases. The switch can also be operated manually for normal switching
operations.

DISCONNECTOR-FUSES AND SWITCH-FUSES
The basis of this equipment is the type RX2 load break switch. This equipment can
be combined with a variety of fuse arrangements to meet the requirements of
most distribution systems.

The following combinations are currently available:

Type RX2/EF A three phase gang operated disconnector or load break switch
fitted with a single pole drop out expulsion fuse on each phase.

Ratings
Service Fuse Interrupting Fuse Link
Voltage Capacity Ratings
12kV 8kA 1-100A

Types RX2/CLF A three phase gang operated disconnector or load break switch
fitted with a single pole drop out current limiting fuse on each phase.

Ratings
Service Fuse Interrupting Fuse Link Transformer
Voltage Capacity Ratings Rating
12kV 40kA 5-100A 1000kVA

Higher fuse link ratings can be supplied by replacing the drop

out arrangement with fixed fuse mounts and two, three or four
current limiting fuses in parallel on each phase.

The switch can also be operated manually for normal switching
operations.
On the RX2 range, the tripping mechanism is an integral part of the switch.

Switch Overview
The MLE Rotating Single Break (RSB) disconnector, and the Rotating Double Break (RDB)
disconnector illustrated above are of the same basic design.
The contacts are similar to those used on our RX range of disconnectors. The electro-
mechanical forces are kept ’in-line’ to achieve high short time current ratings.
The swivel contacts on the RDB and RSB types are made of high conductivity material
and are designed to withstand the short time current without welding.
The bearing for the rotating insulator is common to both types. The shaft is
manufactured from high grade stainless steel, and is fitted with ‘sealed for life’ ballraces.
No maintenance is required.

LOAD BREAK SWITCHES
The fitting of MLE interrupter heads converts the basic RDB or RSB disconnector into a RDBL or RSBL load break switch. The
principle of operation is shown diagrammatically and explained below. Please note that the maximum service voltage is 36kV.

OPERATION
A B (Refer to diagrams)

A. Switch closed.
Blue line indicates current flow through main
contacts. Interrupter does not carry current.

B. Start of opening sequence.

Main contacts have parted. All current now
flows through the interrupter. Transfer
contact maintains a continuous circuit
between main contacts parting and the blade
probe engaging with the operating arm.
During the movement from ‘A’ to ‘B’ opening
and resetting springs are charged.

C. Further movement of the blade from that

shown by position ‘B’ causes retaining catch
to be released. The interrupter moving
contact including trailer, due to the action

C D of the opening spring, shoots upwards at

high speed to create a separation from the
interrupter fixed contacts. The separation
of the interrupter contacts is maintained
through to ‘C’ when subsequent movement
of the blade causes blade probe to part
company with the operating arm, which falls
back, by the action of the resetting spring, to
a closed position of the interrupter.

D. Shows the position taken by the interrupter

with a switch in the open position.

PRINCIPLE OF INTERRUPTION
The duration of separation of the interrupter contacts is sufficient
to interrupt all currents within the specified range, before the
contacts reclose to position ‘D’. Arcing times of currents up to 400A
are about 1/50th of a second.

RDB DOUBLE BREAK

DISCONNECTORS
MAJOR PATTERN 145KV
Switch Overview
Morris Line Engineering has developed and fully type tested their range of 145kV
Disconnectors using Silicone Rubber or Porcelain Insulators.
The basic design has been developed using the concept of the 72.5kV rotating range,
which has proved very reliable and successful over the previous 20 years.
Our design team has used the concept of a locking/guide arrangement on all the contacts
that acts when the Disconnector is in the closed position preventing contact separation
and contact pressure variation when using silicone insulators under fault conditions.
All the contact spring pressure are accurately achieved by using adjustable contact
fingers which are set up once the forces of any bus bar or conductors are connected to
the connector pads, this concept maintains the correct pressure as was originally type
tested.
The 145kV RDB can be operated either manually or motorised.
Earth blades can be fitted on either or both sides of the Disconnector.

Equipment Overview
Designed to be suitable for mounting on standard OLE support structures directly above the track, the type FED fixed
earthing device has been developed to cater for Network Rail’s latest requirements for fast and reliable section earthing
of overhead lines. It is the first of its kind to allow earthing from a control box, rather than portable earth leads, thereby
increasing safety while maximising productivity during trackside maintenance.
Available in a variety of single pole and ganged multi-pole configurations to suit all portal and gantry structures, the FED
can be operated either manually or by means of a purpose-designed motor mechanism which allows for remote operation
driven by hard wired reliable relay logic and can accommodate specific electrical interlocking arrangements.
Motor mechanisms are supplied with inputs and outputs suitable for use with Network Rail’s approved SCADA and RTU
communications equipment and a lockable access cover.
