MOUNTING
Either vertical or horizontal base mounting on MLE designed

Preferable to limit mounting height to 4800mm from ground to
base so as to keep the moving parts, i.e. coupling pipe between
mechanism and FTS as short as possible, and also to have easy
access to main contacts after a fault closure.
STANDARD FITMENTS
• Terminal pads with one hole and slot per pad to
receive Customer’s connection.
• 110V trip coil, 100W
• One normally open and one normally closed

LOADMASTER
INTERRUPTER HEADS
UP TO 36kV
Equipment Overview
All types of disconnector manufactured by MLE can be converted to switch disconnectors
by the addition of MLE Loadmaster interrupter heads.
Interrupter heads are available in two sizes; 12kV and 24/36kV.
Arc interruption within the Loadmaster is achieved by a hard gas generated at high
pressure in the space occupied by the arc column. The hydrogen and carbon dioxide
gases which are generated by thermal action on the acrylic liner acts to de-ionise the gas
produced by the arc and improve its electric strength.

M RANGE
PUSHER DISCONNECTORS
UP TO 52kV
1250A 25kA/3 secs.
Switch Overview
The MLE range of M type disconnectors is a cost effective, reliable,
and low maintenance design. The use of nickel plated solid copper
switching blades dispenses with the need for flexible cables and
pantographs that historically have been proved to be a source of
trouble. The hinge end contacts are of the self cleaning design with
independent pressure springs on each side. The whole assembly makes
for a very robust and reliable design.

Manufacturers of High Voltage Disconnectors & Switches
Switch Overview
The MLE Rotating Single Break (RSB) disconnector, and the Rotating Double Break (RDB)
disconnector illustrated above are of the same basic design.
The contacts are similar to those used on our RX range of disconnectors. The electro-
mechanical forces are kept ’in-line’ to achieve high short time current ratings.
The swivel contacts on the RDB and RSB types are made of high conductivity material
and are designed to withstand the short time current without welding.
The bearing for the rotating insulator is common to both types. The shaft is
manufactured from high grade stainless steel, and is fitted with ‘sealed for life’ ballraces.
No maintenance is required.

OPERATION
A B (Refer to diagrams)
A. Switch closed.
Blue line indicates current flow through main
contacts. Interrupter does not carry current.
PRINCIPLE OF INTERRUPTION
The duration of separation of the interrupter contacts is sufficient
to interrupt all currents within the specified range, before the
contacts reclose to position ‘D’. Arcing times of currents up to 400A
are about 1/50th of a second.
Interruption is caused by a self-generated gas at high pressure in
the space occupied by the arc column. As the interrupter contacts
part an arc is drawn in the plastic-lined bore of the interrupter
body. The arc is squeezed into the annular space between the
clearance of the trailer and the bore. During arcing, energy in the
form of gas is released from the trailer which is moulded from a
compound of acrylic and cellulose powders which, under arcing
conditions, release sufficient proportion of gases and have a low
carbonisation rate since carbon atoms in the molecular structure
are protected by hydrogen atoms, the build-up of the dielectric
strength of the gas is greater than the breakdown strength of the
rate of rise of the recovery voltage and an interruption occurs.

Equipment Overview
Designed to be suitable for mounting on standard OLE support structures directly above the track, the type FED fixed
earthing device has been developed to cater for Network Rail’s latest requirements for fast and reliable section earthing
of overhead lines. It is the first of its kind to allow earthing from a control box, rather than portable earth leads, thereby
increasing safety while maximising productivity during trackside maintenance.
Available in a variety of single pole and ganged multi-pole configurations to suit all portal and gantry structures, the FED
can be operated either manually or by means of a purpose-designed motor mechanism which allows for remote operation
driven by hard wired reliable relay logic and can accommodate specific electrical interlocking arrangements.
Motor mechanisms are supplied with inputs and outputs suitable for use with Network Rail’s approved SCADA and RTU
communications equipment and a lockable access cover.
