UNIT 4 Celebrate!
Track 4.1
N: Listening, Unit 4, Page 50, C
Student: My favourite month at school is May. There is always so much happening then. We
have sports day but we also celebrate international week. This year our class is
preparing a presentation on Australia.
Our teacher divides us into groups and we each prepare one topic about the
country.
On the last day we have a parade and we all dress in our national costumes, if we
have one. I’m Brazilian and I have a very colourful carnival costume with lots of
feathers!
The parade lasts for about an hour. Then we all go to the gymnasium for lunch with
our parents.
After lunch there is some music and singing. Some parents play instruments from
the different countries.
We finish school at half past one on that afternoon, which is earlier than normal.
That way we can go home with our mums and dads.
Track 4.2

Ex N: You will hear a teacher talking to her class about preparing for international week. Listen and

Teacher: Good morning, everybody. Before we start I want to give you some information
about this year’s international week.
This year we are celebrating international week from 2nd to 10th June.
Our class needs to prepare a presentation and activities on the country of Colombia,
in South America.
RECORDING SCRIPT: CLOSE-UP A1+ STUDENT’S BOOK with answers
Each class has five days to prepare the presentation. We need to find out about
Colombia’s geography, its languages, its food and its festivals. We also need to make
a flag. The flag has three colours; yellow, blue and red.
Your parents are coming on the last evening to see the presentation. That will be on
the 10th of June at six thirty.
OK… let’s get organised!

bike for two people, called a tandem. We cycled along the river in the park.
Wendy: No, we didn’t! We cycled up a hill. It was impossible!
Robert: But we stopped in a village and had tea and cakes. You loved chocolate cake.
Wendy: I love cakes but fruit cakes were always my favourite! Then in the evening we went
to the cinema and watched a romantic film.
Robert: No, no, we didn’t. It was a science fiction film with aliens …
Both: Hahaha.

Here’s a little introduction to two of our most popular robots, Jibo and Buddy.
Jibo doesn’t move by itself but it’s not heavy so you can carry it anywhere in the
house. Buddy is taller and can move but it doesn’t have feet. It moves on a small
ball, but it can’t go upstairs or open doors.
Buddy likes to look after you. You can use Buddy to wake you up in the morning and
tell you what things you need to do. Jibo also helps you organise your day but it likes
to organise your house, too. You can use Jibo to turn lights on and off and control
the temperature of your house. Jibo can also protect your home, especially when
you are on holiday.
Jibo is a good teacher. For example, it can teach your grandparents how to use new
technology. It can read stories to your children when they go to bed and find recipes
to help you cook a delicious dinner. You can also use Jibo to take photos of you and
your family at parties or on holiday.
Buddy doesn’t take photos but you can use it to project and show movies or video
games onto a wall so you have a bigger screen.
Jibo and Buddy both have batteries that can last for eight hours. Then you can plug
them in to recharge. They recharge quickly.
Are you interested? Your life will be easier when you have a robot.

This is simple fun! All you do is climb into a big plastic ball and roll round and round. You can roll
down a hill or roll on water. Some theme parks call it ‘water walking’. It’s not easy to stand up! Some
orbs have straps to hold you in place but in many orbs you move around freely and have to control
the direction you’re rolling in.
N: 2
It’s what acrobats do. It’s like swinging on a swing in the park only … it’s a lot higher! You can stand
or sit on the swing but you also learn to hold on to the swing with just your hands. Then you learn to
bring your legs over the bar and hang upside down from your knees! It’s very energetic and there
are lots of tricks to try!
N: 3
If you’ve always wanted to swim like a fish, then you’ll love this new extreme sport! You need to be a
confident swimmer before you can do this sport. You have to learn to breathe slowly and for a
longer time under water and there are special classes for this. You gradually learn to relax but it’s
not as easy as you think!
Track 9.2

Girl: Yes, a friend of mine has done it with some friends. They say it’s great fun, especially at
parties.
Boy: I agree it looks interesting but you need a hill to roll down.
Girl: No, you can also do it on flat land and on water. That way you have more control.
Boy: It’s a great way to travel!
Girl: Yes, but the plastic is thick so you can’t really see where you are going!
Boy: What about this sport, trapezing! That looks really energetic and fun.
Girl: Yes, but in my opinion, it’s too dangerous. You can fall.
Boy: I don’t agree. It’ll be like flying and there’s a net to catch you.
Girl: It’ll probably be expensive too.
Boy: You’re right and it’s not easy to find places that teach this sport because you need special
equipment.
Girl: What about Mermaid classes?
Boy: Can boys do it?
Girl: I’m not sure but it’s good exercise and not expensive.
Boy: Yes, I agree, but you need to buy a special costume.
Girl: Oh, and it says you have to be a confident swimmer to join, and I can’t swim.
Boy: I can’t swim either. Maybe we should join swimming classes instead!
Girl: I agree!

Garlic helps to stop you getting a cold or the flu. Traditional European cooking uses a lot of garlic. In
some places, like Bulgaria, people rub garlic on their feet when they go to bed. You smell of garlic in
the morning, but you feel better!
N: 2
People in China use chopsticks to eat their food and they eat more slowly. Doctors say that this is
healthy because they eat less!
N: 3
In countries like Iceland, Denmark and Sweden, people love saunas. They help you relax your body
and are very good for your skin. Unfortunately, to complete the experience you need to have a cold
shower, or jump in an ice bath …. Brrrrr!
N: 4
These bands you wear on your wrist are very popular at the moment in Britain. They count the steps
you walk in a day and tell you if you should do more exercise!
N: 5
People have eaten chocolate for hundreds of years but did you know that in some parts of Mexico,
children drink chocolate for breakfast so that scorpions and bees don’t sting them on their way to
school? In some Caribbean islands people eat chocolate to help with stomach aches and headaches.
Interesting!

Last year we went to Ibiza. It was our first holiday on an island. Normally we travel around our own
country in our camper van.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go well. First of all, the flight was delayed for an hour and then two
hours, and then three! We eventually boarded the flight, four hours later.
When we arrived at the hotel, there was a party and it was very noisy. At least the rooms were
quieter.
The first afternoon, we walked to the beach. It was beautiful but too crowded so we went to the
swimming pool instead.
The next day there were storms and it rained for the rest of the week!
We visited the nearest town with umbrellas but it was modern and boring. There was nothing to do
there!
Now we’re making plans for next summer … we’re going to stay at home and sit in the garden!
