Lab Manual-Arena-1

This document outlines the objectives, learning outcomes, and activities for a lab assignment on simulation modeling using Arena. The lab will introduce concepts of modeling and simulation and the basic tools in Arena. Students will create a basic simulation of a manufacturing system consisting of arrivals, processing, and departures modules. They will run simulations of the base case and alternative scenarios to analyze the output and conduct what-if analyses. Key performance measures like utilization, waiting time, and number waiting will be compared for the base case and scenarios with improved technology and faster arrivals.

Semester Spring 2020 Week # : 1

Course Title Computing in Industrial Engineering

Course Code IE 332 Lab : 2
Assignment
Lab Title Arena Part 1

American University of Middle East (AUM) College of Engineering & Technology IE332 Lab
Objectives:

• Explain the concept of modeling and simulation

• Identify the basic tools in Arena
• Create basic simulation models in Arena
• Analyze the simulation report
• Conduct scenario/what-if analysis

Higher Education.

Learning Outcomes:

• Gain knowledge of the basics of Arena

• Create basic simulations via Arena
• Analyze the simulation output
• Conduct scenario/what-if analysis
• Learn Create, Process and Dispose modules

American University of Middle East (AUM) College of Engineering & Technology IE332 Lab
In Lab Activities:

A presentation about Simulation, Modeling and Arena will be shown during the lecture
while creating the simulation. Simulation system will consist of the following parts:

• Use the “Create” module to create the entities which will enter to the system

• Double click on “Create 1” and change its name to “Job arrivals”. Write “Part” as entity
type. Change the “Units” to “Minutes”. Define the “Value” as “30”; this means that 1
part will arrive to the system every 30 minutes through an exponential distribution.

• Drag “Process” module, to in front of the “Create Part” and connect them with using the
“Connect” button.

• Double –click on “Process 1” and change the name as “Machine”.

“Action” will be “Seize Delay Release”,
“Delay type” will be Expression,
“Value” will be Expo 24,
“Units” will be “Minutes”.

• Drag “Dispose” module to the end of the system. Connect “Machine” to the Dispose.
Double click on the Dispose module and change its name as “Job Departures”.

• Click on “Entity” at “Basic Process” and change “Initial Picture” as “Picture Yellow Ball”
• Click on “Entity” at Ribbon. Click on yellow ball and add that to the entity list with
double arrow. Then, click on “OK”

• Click on “Run” on the top ribbon. Select “Setup”.

“Replication Length” will be “1000000”, “Time Units” will be “Minutes”
“Base Time Units” will be “Minutes”

• Click on “Go” on the ribbon. Change the simulation speed from “Speed factor”

on the top ribbon.

• Explain the report page by page

• Adjust your Run setup.

• Run your process.
• Report page will appear after simulation is completed

Running Scenarios
• What if a “better technology” is developed and job processing times are decreased to 12
minutes in average

• Do not forget! Still we will assume exponentially distributed processing times.

• What if job inter-arrival times are decreased to 15 minutes in average

• Do not forget! Still we will assume job inter-arrival times are exponentially distributed
with mean 15 minutes
