(1921-2011), Paris, France. Hodeir studied music formally for many years but also
developed a fascination for jazz. In the late 40s he frequently wrote jazz criticism,
becoming chief editor of the French magazine Jazz Hot. He also wrote an important
book, first published in the USA in 1956 under the title Jazz: Its Evolution And Essence.
He played violin and recorded with various jazz groups, including musicians such as
Django Reinhardt and Kenny Clarke. However, Hodeir was more interested in
composing and writing about jazz and his playing days were thus numbered. From the
mid-50s until the end of the 60s he co-led a band, Jazz Groupe De Paris, with Bobby
Jaspar, a vehicle for his own compositions. In the 60s he took an interest in third
stream music, composing in this hybrid medium. He was also in demand as a composer
of music for the soundtracks of motion pictures. By the 80s Hodeir had abandoned
composing, channelling most of his energies into writing. From recordings of his work,
Hodeir’s composing and arranging talents are evident, although there is much about his
composing, especially in third-stream mode, that makes his work less than readily
accessible to the general listener. His criticism is also interesting and perceptive
although often pugnaciously argumentative and sometimes slightly wrong-headed.
Nevertheless, he is always thought-provoking and some of his in-depth analyses are
incisive and informed.

El aficionado al jazz inclinaba respetuosamente la cabeza a su paso. Violinista,


compositor, arreglista, musicólogo y escritor, André Hodeir contribuyó como pocos a
hacer del jazz la música respetable y respetada que es hoy día. Su muerte, en
Versalles, ocurrida el pasado 1 de noviembre a los 90 años de edad, deja al jazz
huérfano de uno de sus más clarividentes pensadores y teóricos.

Hodeir iba para violinista clásico cuando el jazz se cruzó en su camino. Alumno del
Conservatorio de París en los años de la guerra, fue compañero de pupitre de Olivier
Messiaen. Pocos conocían su doble personalidad como músico, que disimulaba bajo el
seudónimo de Claude Laurence. Hodeir se las apañó para juntarse con lo mejor del jazz
francés de la época, de André Ekyan a Django Reindhart. Con este último trabajó en la
película Le Village de la colère.

La eclosión del bebop tras la guerra le alcanzó de pleno. Hodeir colaboró con quienes se
encargaron de difundir los valores del nuevo jazz entre los europeos: los saxofonistas
Don Byas y James Moody, el pianista John Lewis, y el baterista Kenny Clarke. Con
Bobby Jaspar, fundó en 1954 el Jazz Group de París, dedicado a la interpretación de su
propia obra. Ese año publicó Hommes et problèmes du jazz, recopilación de sus
artículos para la revista Jazz Hot, incluyendo un polémico epílogo bajo el título La
religión del jazz. La obra crítica de Hodeir culminaría en 1970 con Les mondes du jazz,
"gran obra hoderiana, híbrida y aguda, ensayo-ficción sobre la naturaleza y las muertes
del jazz, sus devenires y sus arrepentimientos", en palabras del musicólogo Christian
Tarting. El versátil André Hodeir fue además autor de dos novelas: Play-back (1983) y
Musikant (1987). En esta última, da cuenta de las razones que le llevaron a abandonar
la práctica del violín. Por lo que respecta a su faceta como compositor de jazz, lo mejor
de la misma se halla condensada en tres discos: Kenny Clarke plays André Hodeir
(1956); American Jazzmen play André Hodeir (1957), con Annie Ross, Donald Byrd, y
Eddie Costa; y Jazz et jazz (1960), con Christiane Legrand y Martial Solal. En sus
últimos años, el trabajo de Hodeir estuvo centrado en otro tipo de obras de mayor
empeño, como es el caso de Anna Livia Plurabelle-Jazz on Joyce, Jazz cantata para dos
voces y orquesta de jazz, y Bitter ending.
