Activity Title: Understanding and collecting data

Concept Notes
Understanding and Collecting Qualitative Data

Characteristics of Qualitative Data Collection

1. Use of open-ended and less structured protocols (i.e., researchers may change
the data collection strategy by adding , refining , or dropping techniques of
questioning informants, generally thinking “outside the box”.
2. Reliance on immersive (also referred to as iterative) interviews like informants
may be interviewed several times to follow up on a particular issue, clarify
concepts or check the reliability of data
3. Use of triangulation to increase the credibility of their findings(i.e., researchers
rely on multiple data collection methods to check the authenticity of their
results)
4. Findings are not generalizable to any specific population, rather each case
study produces a single piece of evidence that can be used to seek general
patterns among different studies of the same issue.

Exercise:
Give the characteristics of qualitative research and explain each.

Factors to Consider in Designing Qualitative Research

 Questions
 Problem
 Method
 Scope of the inquiry
 Nature of the data, and
 Creativity of the researcher in controlling the topic of
investigation

Generally, the five (5) guiding principles in designing the qualitative inquiry rest on some
questions to ask, as follows: (Richards, 2005)
Principle 1: Establish purpose
Principle 2: Locate methodology
Principle 3: Define scope
Principle 4: Plan the nature of your data
Principle 5: Think ahead

Exercise:
Give what is asked:
1. 5 guiding principles in designing the qualitative inquiry
2. 6 Factors to Consider in Designing Qualitative Research

Activity Title: Sample and Sampling Procedures

Learning Targets: To Identify the sampling procedures of making a research
Reference Title: Practical Research 1: Qualitative Research, Works of Reality and
Dissections
Author: Ronald M. Henson, et. al. Page Numbers: 138

Concept Notes
Sample and Sampling Procedures
Sampling for qualitative research is a good and rational choice of participants who can
provide in-depth data through the interview or discussion process. Oftentimes, it is done
purposively. By definition, purposive sampling, also referred to as judgment, selective or
subjective sampling is a non-probability sampling method that is characterized by a deliberate
effort to gain representative samples (comprised of 5-7 participants because size does not matter)
by including groups or typical areas with maximum variation in a sample.

Exercise:
In your own words or definition, define the sampling procedures of a research.
