Revision Session Chapter: Organisms & Their Environment: or How Producers Make Their Food? Ans

Producers, consumers, and decomposers all play important roles in ecosystems. Producers, like plants, use photosynthesis to produce their own food from sunlight, water and carbon dioxide. Consumers eat other organisms and can be herbivores, omnivores, or carnivores. Decomposers break down dead organisms and waste. Energy and matter are transferred between these groups and recycled through the ecosystem.

Chapter: Organisms & their Environment

• On the basis of food for energy, all living things within an ecosystem can be
categorized into three groups:
1. Producers
2. Consumers
3. Decomposers

• Energy and matter are transferred throughout ecosystems, and are

always recycled via the actions of producers, consumers and decomposers.

• What are Producers?

Ans: Living organisms that can prepare their own food using sunlight are
called producers.

• What is Photosynthesis?
Ans: The process by which producers use sunlight to prepare food is called
Photosynthesis.

• Explain how producers get their energy

Or
How producers make their food?

Ans:
Producers use photosynthesis to make their food.

During photosynthesis, producers take in carbon dioxide (CO2) and water.

They use the Sun's energy to convert the CO2 and water into sugar,
called glucose, and oxygen.

Producers use glucose as food. The oxygen they produce can be used by other
organisms to breathe!
Photosynthesis equation:
CO2 + H2O Light Energy C6H1206 + O2
• What are Consumers? Explain its different types.
Ans: Living organisms that eat the flesh of other organisms are called
consumers.

• Consumers can be broken up into three groups:

Herbivores Omnivores Carnivores

Animals that only eat Animals that eat plants Animals that only eat
plants. and other animals. flesh of other animals.
E.g.: Koalas, kangaroos, E.g.: Bilbies, bear, human E.g.: Platypus, sharks,
cow,goat. beings. tiger, lion.

• We can order consumers into different orders.

First order consumers eat producers. Eg; Rabbit, Goat

Second order consumers eat the first order consumers. Eg; Octopus, Bob-cat.

Third order consumers eat second order consumers. Eg; tiger, shark.

• What are Decomposers?

Ans: Decomposers are organisms that gain energy by breaking down dead or
decaying organisms. They include things like bacteria, snails and fungi.

• What are Detritivores?

Ans: Detritivores are organisms like earthworms and slugs, which burrow through
soil and eat the waste products of other organisms.
• What is a food chain?
Ans: Food chains show who eats what. It is a visual way of showing
the relationships between producers, consumers and decomposers in an
ecosystem.

• Why are food webs helpful?

Ans: Food webs are helpful because they show all of the relationships between
organisms, making it easier to see how they all interact with each other.
