2019 - 2020 Course Syllabus

Goals:
● To become compassionate beings through our understanding of music.
● To establish and reinforce correct singing/musical techniques and skills.
● To recognize, understand, and apply structural elements of melody, harmony,
rhythm, and form from both the standpoint of performer and listener.
● To improve the use of expressive elements such as dynamics, phrasing, and
tempo.
● To develop a sense of fulfillment, responsibility, and pride in quality
performance.

Evaluation:
1. Rehearsal Participation/Lesson Skills - 30%
a. Behavior within the classroom
b. Adherence to all classroom policies ​(see below)
c. Showing continuous effort and growth as a musician and person
d. Lesson attendance and effort
2. Classroom Assessment - 30%
a. Any written assignments in class
b. Sight-reading examples
c. Journaling entries
3. Performance Assessment - 40%
a. Attendance and punctuality at performance events (attendance at
performances is ​mandatory​, any emergencies that preclude attendance
at these events are to be brought up to Mr. M with parent/guardian
confirmation)
b. Behavior at performances (both on and off stage)
c. Performance Evaluation (to be done after each major performance)
Concert Dress:
This year, concert dress is slightly altered. All students will wear a ​black ​dress shirt and
black​ dress pants with ​black​ dress shoes and ​black​ socks. Any questions about attire
should be directed to Mr. M and students should secure these dress items ASAP (by
October 1st at the latest).

Classroom Policies:
● Respect your teacher, respect your classmates, respect yourself.
● Improve each day. Don’t ever settle for less.
● Enjoy the process. Many of our goals will take time. Do your best, but be patient.
● No gum, candy, food, beverages, including coffee, in rehearsal rooms. However,
WATER is encouraged.
● No cellphones or other electronic devices in class.
● Students must pay for any lost or damaged music, folders, or uniforms. (your
textbook is your sheet music, each may cost up to $5)
