Practice Problems in Seeders/Crop Planters: Note

This document contains 9 practice problems related to seeders and crop planters. The problems cover topics like calibrating seeding rates, calculating seed spacing in rows, determining the number of seeds to plant based on desired plant population, and calculating linear cell speeds and seed velocities based on planter specifications.

Practice Problems in Seeders/Crop Planters

 NOTE :
Problems are taken from Farm Power and Machinery Management by D.O. Hunt and
Principles of Farm Machinery by Kepner

1. In a full - width calibration test of an 18 x 200 mm [ 18 x 8 in ] grain drill, 30

turns of the drive wheel yield 3 kg [ 6.6 lb ] of oats. If the rolling circumference of
the wheel is 3.7 m [ 12.14 ft, what is the seeding rate ? Assume 1% drive wheel
slip in the field.

2. A planter plate turns one-half revolution for each revolution of the ground wheel.
The ground wheel has an effective circumference of 2 m [ 78.74 in ] and the plate
has 16 cells. What is the spacing in the row ?

3. The fertility of a particular field is such that the corn yield is at a maximum at
37500 plants/ha [15000 plants/a ]. The average survival is 85%. The row spacing
is 760 mm [ 30 in. ].

(a) How many seeds per hill (average ) should be planted if hill are 760 mm [ 30
in. ] apart in the row?

(b) What would be the seed spacing if the crop were drilled?

(c) If a planter with a 16 - cell plate ( 1 seed/cell ) is used and the squash - radius
of the ground wheel is 380 mm [ 15in. ], how many revolutions must the plate
make per revolution of the wheel? Assume zero slip.

4. In the example calculations associated with Fig. 8.25 a sprocket ratio of 0.612 was
desired but only a ratio of 0.60 was possible./ Should air be added or let out of the
planter tires to more nearly match the desired seed spacing in the row ?

5. (a) What seed spacing is required when planting corn in rows 102 cm apart if the
desired plant population is 6000 plants per hectare and an average emergence of
75% is expected?

(b) If the edge-drop seed plate has 16 cells, and a diameter of 200 mm, what is
the linear cell speed in meters per min when planting at 8 km/hr.

6. A horizontal plate planter has plates with 72 cells on a 165-mm diameter circle.
The effective radius of the drivewheel (presswheel) is 195 mm. A 16-tooth
sprocket on the presswheel drives an 18-tooth sprocket on the feed shaft. A 12-
toothe bevel gear on the feed shaft drives a 27-tooth gear on the plate shaft.
(a) Calculate the seed spacing in the row for 100% cell fill.
(b) If a plate speed of 15 m/min gives 100% cell fill, what forward
speed (km/hr) is required for 100 % cell fill.?

7. A planter has a vertical rotor metering device , but with no seed ejector. The unit
is operated without a seed tube, the seeds being released at the lowest point of
travel and falling freely by gravity to the furrow bottom 90-mm below. The
peripheral speed of the rotor is 21m/min and the ground speed is 5 km/hr. How far
does the seed move horizontally(indicate whether forward or backward) between
the point of discharge and the point of impact in the furrow,

(a) if the rotor turns in the same direction as the ground wheels
(b) if the rotation is opposite
(c) at what angle from the vertical does the seed strike the bottom of the
furrow in each case. Neglect air resistance.

8. During a cell fill- test with sugar beet seed in a horizontal- plate planter having a
plate with 72 cells on a 167-mm diameter circle., 28.75 grams of undamaged
seeds and 0.95 grams of damaged (screened ) seeds were collected during 50
revolutions of the ground wheel in 68 s. A 6.40-gram sample contained 556 seeds.
The seed plate makes 0.76 revolution for each revolution of the ground wheel.
Calculate:

(a) Average percent cell fill including the damaged seed.

(b) Linear speed of cells in meters/min.
(c) Percent seed damage

9. The seed tube on a plate-type corn planter is angled 20o rearward from the
vertical and the seed plate is 560-mm above the furrow bottom.

(a) What is the horizontal rearward component of the seed velocity with
respect to the planter when the seed tube reaches the furrow? Neglect the
effect of friction and seed bouncing on the tube.

(b) What would be the horizontal velocity of the seed with respect to the
ground, in kilometers per hour, if the planter speed is 7.25 km/hr?
