Branch: Mechanical Engg. Semester: 6th M.M. - 20 Marks

ROLL No: ....................................................

ATTEMPT ANY FIVE QUESTIONS. EACH QUESTION CARRIES EQUAL MARKS

Q1(a). Explain the following terms-
(i). Sound pressure level and Loudness of sound (ii). Decibel Scale, Addition and Subtraction
(b). A diesel powered heavy truck has the noise sources with sound pressure level (SPL) in the presence of background noise
as- Exhaust = 98 dB, Fan = 88 dB, Engine = 83 dB, Air Intake = 75 dB
When the truck is turned off, The SPL at the same place is 70 dB. Determine the overall SPL of the truck independent of the
background noise.
(OR)
(a). Write short notes on the following-
(i). Frequency dependent human response to sound (ii). Octave band analysis and sound spectra
(b). In the presence of background noise of 85 dB level, the sound measurements of the operation of three machines
Independently provided values 88 dB, 90 dB and 92 dB. Determine the overall SPL and avg. SPL of three machines working
together in the absence of background noise.

Q2(a). Explain the following terms-

(i). Noise standards and limits (ii). Noise control methods at source level, along the path and by receiver
(b). A circular cylinder of mass ‘m’ and radius ‘r’ is connected by a spring of stiffness ‘s’ as shown in figure. If it is free to roll on
the rough horizontal surface without slipping. Find its frequency using energy method.

(OR)
(a). Explain the Inverse - square law and relationship between sound power level and sound intensity level.
(b). An automobile is found to have a natural frequency of 20 rad/s without passengers and 17.32 rad/s with passengers of
mass 500 kg. Find the mass and stiffness of the automobile by treating it as a single degree of freedom system.

Q3(a). Explain the major industrial noise sources and strategies used to control them.
(b). The natural frequency of a spring mass system is found to be 2 Hz. When an additional mass of 1 kg is added to the
original mass ‘M’, The natural frequency is reduced to 1 Hz. Find the spring constant ‘s’ and mass ‘M’.
(OR)
(a). Explain the auditory and non-auditory effects of noise.
(b). A stepped shaft has three segments of diameters and lengths as d1 = 40 mm, L1 = 0.3 m, d2 = 50 mm, L2 = 0.4 m, d3 = 80
mm, L3 = 0.5 m. Find the equivalent length of the shaft of uniform diameter of 50 mm. Hence find the natural frequency of
torsional vibration, If G = 0.8 x 1011 N/m2 and Mass Moment of inertia is 12 kgm2.

Q4(a). What do you mean by Vibration, Natural Frequency, Free and Forced vibration?
(b). A Helical spring of stiffness ‘s’ is cut into two halves and a mass ‘m’ is connected to the two halves as shown in fig(1). The
natural time period of this system is found to be 0.5 sec. If an identical spring is cut so that one part is one-fourth and other
part is three-fourth of original length, and the mass ‘m’ is connected to two parts as shown in fig(2). What would be the
natural period of system?

(OR)
(a). Explain Compound pendulum, Centre of percussion and its importance.
(b). Determine the equation of vibration of the water column in a U- tube shown in figure –

Q5. Describe the principle of conservation of energy and D’ Alembert’s principle. Derive the equation of motion of spring mass
system using both of these principles.
(OR)
Determine the natural frequency of the systems as shown in figure (a), (b), (c) & (d)-
