into a real world application. The course has provided me the venue to further enhance and
broaden my knowledge and competency as a civil engineering student and for future career
objectives after graduation. As a student trainee, I have been able to take advantage of the tools
and skills I have equipped by my intensive academic formation in the university, to be competent
enough in pursuing different opportunities available in the outside world.
The objective was to be in an on-the-job training position where I can effectively apply
my critical and analytical skills from my academic training experience and to complete a total of
240 hours from Monday to Saturday with minimum of 3 hours per day. The interest in building
my foundation regarding construction management and the application of the engineering
theories in construction awakened. And with the help of a friend and a big hope of being
accepted, I applied to be a student trainee at the Pyramid Holdings Group Corporation for their
Montage Baguio Centrale Project and was accepted. The corporation is owned by Mr. Ben
Cuason and it is their biggest project and the owner of the building is Jaime K. Chua.
We were four on-the-job trainees accepted in the company. I started my training on the
14th of June 2019. Engr. Keith V. Bolusan, Quality Control Engineer gave me a brief orientation
regarding the works to be done. Together with Engr. Jan R. Beria, Project Engineer, they stood
as our Immediate Supervisor for the complete training period. The given tasked for me is to
estimate and supervise the project during the whole duration of my training. I am also tasked to
help the document controller whenever she needs help. The Montage Baguio Centrale Project is
a five-story hotel with basement; three story commercial building with basement, and two-story
chapel with mezzanine and bus terminal.
My first week was personally motivating and enhancing even though I was nervous at
first. I was exposed to the actual process of building construction and realized that practical
practice is very different from academic practices. In my stay, I had asked questions whenever I
observed something and learned more of the nature of construction. I learned, specially, that
estimation is different in some points with what I learned in the university. I had encountered
and identified problems regarding building construction, which were, according to Engr. Keith
and some of the staff, common in construction like wages, food, etc. I also assisted in doing the
payroll of the workers.
As I strive for more learning and knowledge and as part of curiosity, we mostly spent our
working time visiting and supervising the works at the site. As we observed many unexpected
delay arises that causes the works to be more difficult and changed the schedule. Thus, as an
engineer we must be flexible and creative to overcome arising problems.
The overall experience for me was very worthwhile. I was exposed to certain aspects of
site supervision and inspection done in the Montage Baguio Centrale Project. Most importantly, I
had the very opportunity to interact with a group of people whom I shared my interest as an
individual. I was able to improve my communication and social for career growth while working
with other people.
The on-the-job training I had served as a motivation for me to improve myself and be
better as a civil engineering student and an aspiring engineer. It is worth the time, effort and hard
work. The short period of time that I have spent in the company contributed a lot in increasing
my awareness and understanding the practical application of my course. The experience
influenced my commitment, competence and compassion as a BS Civil Engineering student who
is soon to be part of the society outside as a working professional.
