Structural Engineering is one of the hardest specialties of civil engineering. It deals with the analysis
and design of structures that resist and support loads. Structural engineers analyze, design, plan and research
structural components and systems to achieve and ensure the safety and comfort of people who will occupy the
structures. They consider mainly the safety, technical, economic and environmental concerns including aesthetic
and social factors.
Last March 5, our group conducted a seminar about Structural Engineering at BA Multimedia with
our guest speaker Engr. Michael B. Baylon. He gave us a broad knowledge about Structural Engineering. His
presentation was focused on Earthquake Engineering, a good topic to be considered about structural ideas.
Throughout our college life we were very much enlightened by the word, “structural”. It is a word that
very wide that in every majoring subject we always encounter this word. We used to tackle this word in Theory
of Structures, Reinforced Concrete Design (RCD), Structural Steel Design, and Pre-stressed Concrete even in
Earthquake Engineering. But, we focused on the basic foundation the Theory of Structures (TOS). It gives us the
meaning of dealing with the principles and methods by which the direct stress, the shear, the bending moment
and the deflection at any section of each constituent member in the structure may be calculated. To give us more
overview, there are three parts of these topics mainly the analysis of statically determinate structures, analysis of
statically indeterminate structures and matrix structural analysis. Categories of theory of structures include
tension structures, compression structures, trusses, shear structures and bending structures. And all these things
we need to know as a foundation for structural engineering.
Then, another topic that he engaged with was all about Earthquake Engineering. He started to tell a
story about the earthquake that happened in 1968 in Casiguran Quezon Province and was the cause of fatalities
and injuries even the destruction of Ruby Tower Hotel in Doroteo Jose Santa Cruz, Manila. This story was the
inspiration of our former President Ferdinand E. Marcos to establish a National Structural Code of the
Philippines or as we know as the NSCP. The NSCP do not only manage the earthquake resiliency of the
structure but upon conforming to the code we manage to expand the life of our structure from the design,
economy and safety and these were the qualities of the civil engineers in the field. Different sets of edition were
brought out by the government about the code and it continues to give us knowledge, guidance and protection
throughout the years.
A famous saying from David Allan Coe leaves it all, “It is not the beauty of a building you should
look at; it’s the construction of the foundation that will stand the test of time.” To give us a support to this
quotation our speaker engages us never to look for money as your first resort when looking for a specialty in
civil engineering instead look for the need not because many people are into this then go for this but always be
sensitive for the need, what your talents and skills are and how we can help our world and our country for the
next years of our life.
