FIRST QUARTER
S.Y. 2018-2019
Handling the Grade 10-Venus is quite a challenging task since the class is composed mostly of
male students who have lower comprehension skills compared to other students their age and grade level.
As of the end of first quarter, the undersigned was able to identify only 4 students from the class who can
practice skillfully the four modalities of communication – writing, speaking, reading, and listening. The
rest of the students can read or can utter the sounds of English but does not display comprehension skills.
They are merely murmuring the sounds of English but cannot really understand the meaning of the
sounds they’re uttering. With this in mind, the undersigned prepared strategic techniques to make the
lesson objectives appropriate for the learners of Grade 10-Venus.
Fifteen learners of Grade 10-Venus were identified as ICL learners. The undersigned see to it
that every Monday is spent for the Independent-Cooperative Learning. The teacher made use of Audio-
Lingual Method and Total Physical Response as language teaching strategies to engage the learners in the
learning process. Peer tutoring will also be used to minimize the filter that learners may feel when teacher
gives reading comprehension tasks. Improvement is quite palpable in the learners after almost three
months of doing ICL. They are now showing palpable improvements in reading comprehension tasks.

Noted:
As expected with Grade 10-STE and Grade 10-Earth classes, most of the learners are quite active
and showed enormous interest with their studies. However, there are few learners from both sections who
are a bit behind from the rest of the class, so the undersigned found it necessary to still conduct an
Independent Cooperative Learning for them to cope with the learning pace of their classmates. The
problem that is palpable in these selected students for ICL is their pronunciation skills and reading
comprehension skills. Their cognition skills were excellent but it seems that they’re having difficulty with
reading comprehension because of the lack of stored vocabulary. With this in mind, the undersigned
made sure to target the said learning deficiencies for the holistic improvement of the chosen ICL learners.
Every Thursday, one learner from G10-STE and two learners from G10-Earth is pulled out from
the regular class and sent to the reading clinic for special sessions that’s composed of pronunciation drills
and vocabulary development activities. The undersigned made use of advanced tongue twisters and
speeches for the improvement of pronunciation and the use of context clues was emphasized and
thoroughly discussed for the enhancement of vocabulary skills. For almost four quarters now, the 3 ICL
students from both sections have dramatically improved and can almost match the learning pace of their
classmates.

Every Friday, the undersigned return to the writers the recorded Essay write-ups and make it as
their subject for self- editing. Using the grammar-translation method in language teaching, students had
fun answering a series of grammar worksheets and consulted the Grdae-10 creative writers for peer
tutoring. Though the ICL may not assure a hundred percent development with the learners’ written skills,
the undersigned is expecting that writers will gradually develop consciousness in writing correctly. Both
form and content is given emphasis in the ICL activities.
