Chemical engineering deals with chemical production and manufacturing processes. It applies principles of chemistry, physics, biology and math to solve problems involving production of chemicals, fuels, drugs, food and other products. A chemical engineer named George E. Davis is credited with founding the field in the late 19th century. His work influenced the creation of the first chemical engineering program at MIT. Chemical engineering requires knowledge of chemistry, economics, math, physics and biology. Graduates work in fields like biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, environmental management, food production, petroleum and oil, industrial chemicals and cosmetics, and electronics. While chemistry focuses more on properties and reactions at a smaller scale, chemical engineering scales processes up for plant and equipment design.

TRISHA: (School’s Façade) Well some of you guys are constantly thinking on what

program will suits you the best when college comes and maybe different fields are
making you confuse about that.
MARGARET: (ARIDBE Building) There are some of you who really thinks that they
could design and color the world.
ARNIL:(GYM) If being hard on the court and throwing spikes and shots catches your
interest then sports is for you.
MARCH: (Mechanical Eng Lab) Science, Mathematics and Engineering are the most
common fields, students are most likely to pursue,
JP:(CHE-CHM Faculty) and if you have the love and interest with Science,
Mathematics, and Engineering in combine, then look and think for it, Chemical
Engineering might be the best for you.
TRISHA: (North Building/ Chemical Engineering Lab)
Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with chemical
production and the manufacture of products through chemical processes. It apply the
principles of chemistry, biology, physics and math to solve problems that involve the
production or use of chemicals, fuel, drugs, food and many other products, according to
the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). It also development and design processes to
create products; either focusing on improving existing processes or creating new ones.
JP: (Intra/walls) But before we give you further information about this discipline of
engineering, let us first dig the roots of Chemical Engineering.
With the great mind of George E. Davis, an English engineer, who is credited
with founding the field of chemical engineering in the late 19th century. He published
the first truly comprehensive overview of the practice in his two-volume "Handbook of
Chemical Engineering" based on a series of 12 lectures he gave at the Manchester
School of Technology. Influenced by Davis’ work, Massachusetts Institute of
Technology’s Lewis Norton created Course X, the world’s first four-year chemical
engineering curriculum.
March: (North Building hallway) Since studying chemical engineering requires
knowledge of Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, Physics and Biology, there are
many different fields where chemical engineers can actually apply learned lectures and
skills.
Biotechnology and pharmaceuticals
Chemical Engineers in pharmaceutical industry are who concentrate on formulating
new medicines for mass production. They help to ensure that compounds being
synthesized for use as medications are safe and meet strict quality standards, hey are
responsible for developing large-scale production, packaging and delivery of all
pharmaceutical products.

Environmental Field
Who says that chemical engineers stays on laboratory and plants, well in environmental
field they do have the engagement with the resources and the nature. Their work is to
lessen the volume of pollutants of entering our air water and soil coming from different
factories and industries that releases toxics and chemicals. They are also in charge for
the policies that they will incorporate with the government that will somehow mitigate
the lessen the pollutants.
Trisha :Food production
Chemical Engineers in field of Food production are enlisted to food proceeding, food
machinery, packaging, constituent manufacturing, instrumentation, and control. Food
engineering involves the activities of the following: drug/food products; design and
installation of food/biological/pharmaceutical production processes; design and
operation of environmentally responsible waste treatment systems; marketing and
technical support for manufacturing plants.
Arnil :Petroleum and Oil
Petroleum and oil Engineers are employed in discovering a cost-effective way
which can be further identify a promising areas for exploration, natural
resources' accessibility, and desirable products' refinance. Acoording to the
American Chemical Society, activities of what a Petroluem Engineers usually do
or their involvement to the oils such as crude oils are as follow: Develop more
efficient ways of turning petroleum, develop new products from petroleum
JP: Industrial Chemicals and Cosmetics
The Industrial Chemical Engineers who develop their job in the industry field are
responsible for innovative proposals and for improving processes in the sectors of Basic
Chemistry, , Petro-chemistry, Industrial Biochemistry or Primary Plastic materials.
Products derived from these industries play a crucial part in our modern lifestyle.
Margaret: Electronics
The well-known semiconductor chips which can be found in the gadgets we used
were designed and created by the Chemical Engineers which are cloesely related
to the job done by the Electronic engineers. These Chemical engineers are vital
in the onfoing progess of the advanced materials and as well as the
manufacturing operations required to produce another electronics that can be
further made into a smaller type of electromic but the capacity of each
increases. And these are the reasons why Chemical Engineers are usually called
Universal or Process Engineer.
ARNIL: (CHEM LAB) Over the years the misconception about Chemists and Chemical
Engineers are still evident. So are chemistry and chemical engineering the same? If not
what are their differences?
(VOICE OVER) Although both chemistry and chemical engineering are on the same
field which is chemistry, there is a difference between the two.
Chemists usually investigate the atomic and molecular properties of matter. They
conduct experiments in order to know the properties of an unknown substance and how
they behave in a certain situation. They also discover or form new compounds in order
to create a new product or improve existing products. Chemists use analytical methods
and instrumentation such as chromatgraphy and spectroscopy.
On the other hand, the main job of Chemical engineers is to convert raw materials into
different kinds of products like food, medicine, cosmetics, and energy. Chemical
engineers are accountable for the processes required to convert raw materials into
these products and they are also known as process engineers. Chemical engineers
focuses on the operation of plants and machinery, the design, or the development of
new products and technologies
On simpler explanation a Chemistry major learns more about the reaction in smaller
scale while Chemical Engineers are the one who scales up that process, design the
plant and other equipment ad understand the reactions.
JPt: (Loc TBA)

Chemical Engineering curriculum includes covering fields such as pure and applied
mathematics, computer-aided design (CAD), and the sciences. In later years, you’ll
move on to more advanced laboratory classes, working with large-scale and industrial
equipment. You can also expect to learn about the wider context of chemical
engineering, including financial, ethical and environmental issues, and may have the
opportunity to study business, finance and management courses.

Typically, chemical engineering courses are taught through a combination of lectures,

tutorials, seminars, computer practice sessions, extensive practical laboratory work and
project work.

Arnil: Ever wondered how materials like nylon and polyester are made?
Margaret: How it’s possible to make food stay fresh for longer?
March: Or what happens inside a water treatment plant?
JP: These are just some examples of topics you might cover as part of a chemical engineering
degree.
Trisha: So what are you waiting for, the world needs your invention say yes to Chemical
Engineering!
