TDT1 Task 3

Discussion of Purpose

The graphics and text used in this task will be incorporated into an instructional unit for

a Kindergarten classroom. This language arts unit about “Parts of Speech” includes and details

the identification of verbs and adjectives in simple sentences. During this unit, students will

learn with understanding two parts of speech and why they are important when reading and

writing sentences. It is important for students to understand how verbs and adjectives work

together in order to correctly write descriptive sentences as well as identify parts of speech

within text.

Audience

The audience for this task is a Kindergarten classroom within the Collierville, Tn school

district. The classrooms typical are occupied with no more than twenty students. My previously

class had approximately 17 students, including nine girls and eight boys. The make-up of the

classroom included a variety of ethnic groups and backgrounds. I had eleven Caucasian

students, three students from India, one Asian student, one African American student, and one

mixed race student. One of my students received English as a Second Language Service, two

students received Speech and Language services and three students received gifted

accommodations.

Software Rationale
For this instructional unit, I used two software programs to create a multimedia

presentation. The first program chosen was Keynote. This program was already downloaded on

my computer because it is provided by my school district as a software program to use in our

classrooms. I chose this program because it was a program that I have previously used in my

classroom with help and training from our technology department. Keynote is a program that

is very familiar to PowerPoint because it allows you to create templates and/or manipulate

slides as well. Due to the fact that most of my students are visual learners, I like that Keynote

gives me the opportunity to share information with graphics to help students see and hear the

information with visual examples. In addition, my classroom is equipped with a promethean

board, so I am easily able to use multimedia creations and display them on a large screen for

my students. Therefore, selecting Keynote to create my storyboard was the best choice for my

classroom.

In addition to Keynote, I also used iMovie as a software program. Like Keynote, it was

also provided by my school district and already download on my computer. Therefore, it was

the best choice to bring my slideshow to life by creating a movie with audio. Although, iMovie

was on my computer, this was the first time I actually used this software program. However, it

was very self-explanatory and not difficult to complete the task at all. I was able to easily make

transitions through slides, adjust time lengths and add audio without a challenge. After using

this program, I do feel I could create more learning tools through iMovie for my students.

Conceptual Framework

In the Kindergarten classroom, we teach them a variety of state standards that include

but are not limited to the parts of speech. The parts of speech are essential to proper grammar.
This concept is very important when teaching kindergarten students how to read and write

sentences correctly. The eight parts of speech are nouns, pronouns, verbs adjectives, adverbs,

prepositions, conjunctions and interjections. However, in the Kindergarten classroom, we are

limited to teach and help our students learn nouns, verbs and adjectives proficiently. For my

presentation, I chose to include “verbs and adjectives”. I chose to display a slide defining the

parts of speech, but I also included graphics and slides that provided details and examples. Both

parts of speech, were highlighted on the title of a slide. The slides were neatly put together and

organized for both presenters and learners. I presented the information by explaining the

graphics and allowing students to think about what was being read to them. I felt this style will

allow students to engage in the lesson and promote a thoughtful discussion about the parts of

speech. Presenters of the presentation have the option to pause the video to allow time for

discussion or questions.
