Lesson 3: Solves routine problems involving addition and/or subtraction of fractions

using appropriate problem-solving strategies and tools.

Day 3

To the Learner

Problem solving requires an imaginative mind to be able to

arrive at an answer easily and systematically. Sometimes an
illustration is a great help to answer some problems.
A routine problem is a type of problem which there is an
immediate solution

3 2
16 8
Father’s car is filled with 4 liters of gasoline. He used 8 liters.
How much gasoline is left?

1. Do you have enough information to solve the problem?

a. Yes b. No c. Maybe d. I don’t know.

2. What is asked for in the problem?

a. the total number of liters of gasoline used by father
b. the total number of liters of gasoline put it in the tank
c. the cost of gasoline per liters.
d. the amount of gasoline left after using the car

3. What operation can be used to solve the problem?

a. addition c. multiplication
b. subtraction d. division

4. Which number sentence can be used to solve the problem?

3 2 3 2
16 8 16 8
a. 4 + 8 =n c. 4 - 8 =n
3 2 2 3
16 8 8 16
b. 4 +n= 8 d. N - 8 = 4
Story problem 1:

1
2
Norie spent 5 hours helping her mother
2
3
do the household chores and hours 5
doing her homework. How many hours did
she spend in all for these activities?

Let’s follow the steps below to answer the problem.

STEP 1 Read and understand the problem.
 What is asked in the problem?
The number of hours Norie spent helping her mother and doing
her homework.
 What are the given facts?
1
2
5 hours - time spent in helping her mother do household
chores.
2
3
5 hours - time spent doing her homework.
STEP 2 Plan.
 What shall we do to solve the problem?
We shall add.
 What is the number sentence?
1 2
2 3
5 + 5 =N
STEP 3 Solve. The fractional parts are
1 2 similar fractions.
2 3
5 + 5 =N

Story Problem 2:

2
1
Keisha spent 3 hours doing her
3
homework in Math and hours in4
English. How much time did she spend
doing her homework in the two subjects?
Let’s solve for the answer.

STEP 1 Understand the problem.

 What is asked in the problem?
The amount of time Keisha spent doing her homework in the
two subject

STEP 2 Plan.
 What process are we going to use to solve the problem?
Addition

 What is the number sentence?

2 3
1
3 + 4 =N

STEP 3 Solve. The fractional parts are dissimilar

2 3 fractions. Change them to similar
1
Let’s compute 3 + 4 = N. fractions first.

2 8
1 1
3 = 12
3 9
This can still be + 4 = 12
simplified.
17 5 5
1 =1+1 =2
12 12 12

5
2
Keisha spent 12 hours doing her homework in the two subjects.
Story Problem 3:

9
6
An athlete can run a kilometer in 10 minutes. If he runs the first half
2
3
kilometers in 5 minutes, how long will it take him to run the second half?

STEP 1 – Read to understand.

 How long does it take the athlete to finish 1 kilometer run?
 How long does it take him to finish the first half kilometer?
 What is asked for in the problem?
STEP 2 – Plan what to do.
 What operation will you use to find the length of time to finish the second
half?
STEP 3 – Do the computations.
9 2
6 3
Length of time to finish the second half = 10- 5
Recall the steps in subtracting dissimilar fractions in mixed forms. Can you
subtract now?

9
6
10  _____
2
3
- 5  - _____
_____

STEP 4 – Check if your answer is reasonable.

Go over the computations carefully.
1
3
Is your answer 2 kilometers?
If you get the same answer, VERY GOOD!

Story Problem 4:
1 2
5 3
Mrs. Catajay bought 4
kilos of chicken. She cooked 3
kilos for
adobo. The rest was cooked for afritada. How many kilos of chicken was cooked for
afritada?

Perform the different steps in your notebook.

STEP 1 – Read to understand the problem.
 How many kilos of chicken did Mother buy?
 How many kilos of the chicken were cooked for adobo?
 What do you need to find?

STEP 2 – Plan what to do.

 In the above problem, what operation is needed to solve the problem?

STEP 3 – Do the computations.

 Write the number sentence needed to solve the problem, then solve for the
answer.

STEP 4 – Check if your answer is reasonable.

 Go over the computation if needed.

7
1
Is your answer 12 kilos?

Again, here is the four-step approach in solving word

problems:

 Read to understand the problem.

 Plan what to do.
 Do the computations.
 Check if your answer is reasonable.
