UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES
DILIMAN

The University of the Philippines Diliman College of Engineering houses around 6000
brilliant engineering students. Consisting of one graduate school, two institutes, and six
departments including several Philippine Centers of Excellence and Research
Development. The college never ceases to find new avenues for collective academic and
socio-civic growth. It also shelters thirty-nine Engineering student organizations actively
participating in the college endeavors and events, bringing the whole community closer to
one another.

UP ENGINEERING STUDENT
COUNCIL

The UP Engineering Student Council is the official student council of the UP College of
Engineering. Consisting of 32 student leaders from different departments and institutes,
UP ESC is geared towards providing quality services, spearheading relevant campaigns
and projects, and organizing top-caliber events for the whole College of Engineering. Every
year, UP ESC remains faithful to its promise of giving its constituents avenues by which
they can grow beyond the academe and achieve holistic development through research,
competitions, sports, recreation, and active campaigns towards social consciousness.

ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS


DILIMAN

Engineers Without Borders-Diliman, or EWB-UPD, is a student-led, service-oriented and


university-wide organization, established to support community development programs
and partnerships for the benefit of developing Filipino communities through engineering
applications. The organization aims to promote the interdisciplinary approach of solving
problems by providing sustainable solutions as manifested in its diverse member base
coming from different programs inside and outside the College of Engineering.
ABOUT THE EVENT
The Engineering Innovations Congress (Engineering ICon) is an annual event of the
Engineering Student Council and the College of Engineering that aims to cultivate and
enrich the innovative minds of the Filipino people. For the past 7 years, engineering
students from different universities all over the Philippines converge through a weeklong
series of events to realize potential long-term engineering solutions to problems that the
world is facing.

This year, we will expand our horizon as we open Engineering ICon to Senior High Schools
and Young Professionals who are filled with ingenuity and passion for nation building.
Now on its 8th year, Engineering ICon sheds light on Sustainable Engineering that features
the Sustainable Development Goals on Good Health and Well-being, Responsible
Consumption and Production, and Climate Action in partnership with Engineers Without
Borders - Diliman.

VISION
• An Engineering Innovations Congress that introduces engineering methodologies
as a solution and approach to achieve a sustainable world.

MISSION
• To showcase how various engineering fields continuously improve the lives of
different communities, and better the environment through science, technology,
and innovation.

GOALS
• To introduce and expose the participants to Sustainable Development Goals
through the Symposium talks and workshops
• To empower and inspire students to continuously innovate and realize their ideas
that will be of service to the country

ABOUT THE EVENT
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Engineering Innovations Congress is envisioned as an event that recognizes the
diversity and social impact of the Engineering disciplines. Its mission is to highlight the
different Engineering fields by promoting and developing feasible ideas into potential
solutions to different issues in the society.

GENERAL EVENT OBJECTIVES


Through the Engineering Innovations Exposition, we aspire to:
• Raise awareness of the students regarding engineering advancements in the
Philippines through the Engineering Innovations Exposition
• Foster a culture of innovation, sustainability, and social responsibility within the
Filipino Engineering student community through the Engineering Innovations Expo
competition

Through the Innovations Symposium, we aim to:


• Empower and inspire the delegates to continuously innovate and create ideas that
will be of service to the community
SYMPOSIUM
With the aim to raise awareness on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,
the Engineering ICon Symposium caters to engineering students nationwide with talks
and workshops offering knowledge of sustainably creating a society through projects that
would serve the public. This 2020, the Engineering ICon Symposium banks on responsible
sourcing geared towards idea generation and the call to action.
TOPIC OVERVIEW
TALK 1: LIVELIHOOD AND CONNECTIVITY FROM
DEVELOPMENT WORK
A talk focusing on incorporating both recycling (e.g. plastic, wood, etc.) and production
(e.g. urban farming produce, household materials, etc.) as a motion for community
development in the urban setting.

TALK 2: CAPACITY BUILDING FOR GREATER SOCIAL


INCLUSION
A session focusing on improving a person's own capabilities and how this can promote
equal opportunities and resources for the disadvantaged.

TALK 3: SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN ASSET


CREATION AND DEVELOPMENT
A session that focuses on how social responsibility has its place in creating sustainable
innovations that serve the people and the environment.
TALK 4: ENERGY CONSERVATION AND EFFICIENCY
A session that focuses on how innovators in various industries have been promoting
the use of environmentally friendly factors to reduce waste and promote energy
conservation and efficiency.
TALK 5: INNOVATOR'S ROLE IN COMBATING
CLIMATE CHANGE
A session that focuses on what specifically innovators have been doing in various
industries to make things more environmentally friendly
WORKSHOP 1: STRATEGIC PITCHING
A progressive session from concept creation to concretization, focusing on how to
improve sustainable ideas and idea pitching.
WORKSHOP 2: CASE STUDY - INNOVATIONS
SOURCING
A practical activity that exposes the participants to real life community problems that
are boiling down to the environmental and management issues. The Case study
session would be a platform for both students and professionals alike to maximize
resources and practice sourcing.

EXPOSITION
The Engineering Innovations Congress Exposition 2020 (Expo 2020) is a nationwide
competition and showcase of social and tech-based solutions by the Filipino youth which
aims to help in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Winners of the
competition can get the opportunity to be seed-funded by Filipino investors for the
development of the project.

OBJECTIVES
The Engineering Innovations Congress Exposition 2020 aims to
• Instill in the Filipino youth a sense of giving back to the Filipino community
• Provide an avenue for students to apply classroom knowledge in the development
of new products/systems and/or the development of existing ones
• Inspire the Filipino youth with the spirit of innovation and creation through a
greater awareness of currently developed projects
MECHANICS
THEMES
The entries for the competition must be related to this year’s chosen Sustainable
Development Goals, namely:

• SGD 3: Good Health and Well Being


• SGD 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
• SGD 13: Climate Action

ELIGIBILITY OF PARTICIPANTS
Participants must be teams composed of at least one (1) and at most five (5)
individuals with the age of 16 to 25 years old. Participants with age of less than 18 shall
be accompanied by their adviser/coach/guardian.

ELIGIBILITY OF ENTRIES
All projects to be submitted must be an original work of the participating team. The
entry can be

• A software, hardware or equipment


• A new product or new concept
• An improvement of an existing product or concept
MECHANICS
COMPETITION FORMAT AND CRITERIA
The competition will have three stages: the screening stage, elimination stage, and
final stage. The screening stage will be done prior to the competition proper. The latter
two stages will be done on the actual day of the Engineering ICON Expo.

SCREENING STAGE
Interested participants must COMPLETELY answer BOTH of
(1) online registration form at bit.ly/IConReg2020 and
(2) the application form (both in PDF and DOC/X), located in
tinyurl.com/EnggIconExpo2020. Download the word file and edit offline, not in
Google Docs.

Submissions will be accepted until JANUARY 19, 2020 (SUNDAY), 11:59 PM. Late
submissions won’t be accepted. Valid entries will be notified via email.

The top TEN (10) projects from the screening stage will proceed to the Eliminations
Stage. Qualified entries will be notified via email. The requirements for the
Eliminations Stage shall also be sent via email.
MECHANICS
ELIMINATIONS STAGE
The Eliminations stage will be done in a research fair/exhibit format during the day of
the Exposition (February 16, 2020).

Each team will be provided a booth where they could show their respective
presentation poster and prototype. The template of the poster shall be provided. While
bringing a prototype is not required, it must be noted that this will affect the team’s
PRESENTATION score for the elimination and final stages.

During the elimination stage, judges will visit each booth at random. All judges will visit
all booths.

Each team will be given a maximum of SEVEN (7) minutes to present an elevator pitch
of their project. A maximum of THREE (3) minutes will be given for questions and
answers from the judges. The THREE (3) minutes will start immediately after the team
ends their pitch.

The entries during the elimination stage will be judged based on the following criteria:

The top SIX (6) teams will advance to the Final Stage.

FINAL STAGE
Qualified teams for the Final Stage will be given a maximum of TEN (10) minutes to
give a more comprehensive pitch of their project to a panel of judges, and a maximum
of FIVE (5) minutes for questions and answers. Order of presentation shall be drawn at
random.

Teams will be judged in the final stage using the following criteria:

IMPORTANT REMARKS
1. The organizers reserve the right to disqualify, in its sole and absolute discretion,
any team from the competition which the organizers have reason to believe has
breached any aforementioned rules or engaged in improper conduct which may
include but not limited to plagiarism or failure to report related intellectual
property ownership of another project. Disqualified teams shall forfeit any and all
prizes awarded to them.

2. All contestants should refrain from contacting the judges of the competition.
Proven cases of malicious contact can cause disqualification of teams.

3. Deductions will be given to teams who will not comply with rules set by the
organizers. They will be notified if deductions were made.

4. Participants must agree to use their names, content and photos in materials for
communication and publicity by the organizers.

5. Entries submitted may be made public by the organizers but with proper credit to
the participants.

6. Engineering ICON reserves all rights to publicize the materials deemed relevant to
the competition.

7. Competitors shall agree that the organizers and all related parties assume no
liability and shall have no liability or obligation whatsoever for disclosures of
information provided by a competitor as part of a submission or otherwise during
the course of the competition.

8. The judges’ decision is final. There shall be no correspondence or discussion with


the judges regarding the scores after the awarding of winners.

9. The Engineering ICON Expo Committee shall be the highest decision-making body
throughout the entire competition. It also reserves the right to modify and revise
mechanics (including awards, criteria, penalties) as deemed necessary. If any
revisions shall be made, the Engineering ICON Secretariat shall inform affected
teams of all the changes.
SOCIALS NIGHT
The Mixer serves as the awards night as well as the culminating activity of the Engineering
Innovations Congress 2019. During this night, participants will be able to share their
knowledge and foster collaborative learning. Moreover, it intends to serve as an avenue for
students to get acquainted with co-students and professionals who also share the same
spirit for innovation and nation-building over dinner and performances from invited
guests.
