This document provides an overview of influence line diagrams and procedures for analyzing beams and frames. It defines influence lines as diagrams that show the effect of a unit load moving along the structure. The procedures outlined include setting an origin, determining expressions for reactions as the load moves, and constructing influence lines by plotting the expressions. Influence lines can then be drawn for shear, bending moment, and reactions at supports by considering load positions on both sides of the point of interest. Sample problems are provided to illustrate the process.

Influence Line D.1.1. Influence Line for Beams and Frames Influence Line for Beams and Frames Influence Line for Reactions Influence Line for Shear Influence Line for Moment Procedures for Analysis 1. Set an Origin (usually at the left end of the structure, assume that the unit load moves from left to right end) 2. Influence line for Support Reaction a. Place the unit load at a distance x from the left end of the structure, and determine the expression for the reaction in terms of x. b. Construct the influence line by plotting the expressions with the magnitude of reaction as ordinate. c. Repeat step 2 until all desired influence lines for reactions are determined. 3. Influence line of Shear and Bending Moments a. Place the unit load on the structure at a position x to the left of the point under consideration, and determine the expression for the shear or bending moment (use the portion of the structure to the right if the point for convenience) b. Place the unit load to the right of the point under consideration, and determine the expression for the shear or bending moment (use the portion of the structure to the left if the point for convenience) c. Construct the influence line for shear or bending moment by combining the segments of the reaction influence lines. d. Repeat step 3 until all the desired influence lines for shears and bending moments are determined. Problem 2 Draw the influence lines for the vertical reactions at supports A, C and E, and the shear just to the right of support C, and the bending moment at point B of the beam. Problem 3 Draw the influence lines for the vertical reaction and the moment at support A of the frame. Assessment Activity: Complete the problem below by supporting the given answers with complete solutions. Please refer to the previous activity for passing insturctions. Problem 4: Draw the influence lines for the horizontal and vertical reactions at supports A and B and the shear at hinge E of the three-hinged bridge frame.
