Tutorial 3
3. Calculate the amount of heat that will be produced in the thermochemical equation below if
13.5 g of solid aluminium were used.
5. Calculate the internal energy of a system if 2.25 kg sample of gold are cooled from 1124°C to
187°C. Given the specific heat of gold, sgold = 0.129 J/g.°C.
6. Calculate the heat capacity of a liquid if 934 J of energy is supplied to increase the
temperature from 28°C to 88°C.
7. The heat capacity of 513 g of mercury is 86.52 J K-1. Calculate the specific heat capacity of
mercury.
8. Given that the specific heat capacity of NaCl = 0.864 J/g.°C. Determine how much the
temperature will increase if we added 75 joules of heat to 75 g of NaCl at room temperature.
State the final temperature in degree Celsius.

10. Differentiate between standard enthalpy change of formation and standard enthalpy change
of combustion.
11. A sample of hydroxyethane weighed 0.85 g was burned in a bomb calorimeter. The
temperature of the calorimeter plus contents was recorded to increase from 29.5°C to 64.7°C.
(Heat capacity of hydroxyethane = 112.4 J/K)
a) Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction.
12. The enthalpies change of formation of ethyne, hydrogen and ethane at 25°C are shown in the
table below.
Calculate the enthalpy change for this reaction : C2H2 + 2H2 C2H6
13. In an experiment, 5.46 g of glucose was completely burn in oxygen. The heat produced was
found to raise the temperature of 18.6 dm3 of water by 14.9°C. Calculate the enthalpy change
of combustion of glucose. (Mr glucose = 180 g/mol; specific heat capacity of water = 4.184
J/g.°C)
14. Find the enthalpy of formation of butane by using the following data.
ΔHc : C4H10 (g) = – 2877 kJ/mol
C (s) = – 395 kJ/mol
H2 (g) = – 286 kJ/mol
15. Use the following enthalpies of reaction to determine the enthalpy for the reaction of
ethylene with fluorine.
C2H4 (g) + 6F2 (g) → 2CF4 (g) + 4HF (g) ΔH = ?
Given :
H2 (g) + F2 (g) → 2HF (g) ΔH = -537 kJ
C (s) + 2F2 (g) → CF4 (g) ΔH = -680 kJ
2C (s) + 2H2 (g) → C2H4 (g) ΔH = 52.3 kJ
