3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Comply with Division 1 Section 017300 “Execution”.
a. Roughen or brush blast extremely smooth surfaces to ensure good mechanical adhesion.
b. Patch holes and cracks before installation.
c. Repair areas of overly rough of damaged concrete as follows:
1) For areas which protrude above adjacent surface level, mechanically remove
until uniformly even with adjacent surface level.
2) For areas with damage 1/8” or less into the concrete, follow traffic topping
manufacturer’s requirements for repair.
3) For areas with damage more than 1/8” into the concrete, repair using methods
described in Division 03, Section 039200 “Concrete Resurfacing”.
4) Overly rough or damaged areas shall be returned to adjacent surface level and
inspected by manufacturer’s representative prior to proceeding with surface
preparation required by this Sect. 071800.3.2.
5) These requirements apply to areas having an overly rough or damage areas that
are visible and to sight-unseen areas which become evident when existing traffic
coating is removed.
d. At areas that are not large enough to support shotblast equipment, such as stair treads,
and in corners, use grinders with abrasive blades, strippers, needle gun, or other hand
and power tools to achieve required surface profile. Consult manufacturer for approved
methods.
e. Isolate all drains, expansion joints, surface protrusions and termination seams with a
detail as required by manufacturer.
f. Substrate surfaces shall have no local surface irregularities greater than 1/8 inch when
checked in any direction by an 8-foot straightedge. Small protrusions exceeding this
criterion must be removed. Small divots up to a 1/2" deep may be filled with joint
sealant or repair mortar as directed by the manufacturer. This requirement also applies
to stair and elevator areas, provided that a 4' straightedge may be used to check for
irregularities on stairs.
