First Internal Question

This document provides instructions for the first internal assessment for the course ENVE 205: Mechanics of Material. It outlines that the assessment will be 1 hour and 30 minutes, and contains 3 questions. The first question asks to find the uniformly distributed load (UDL) a steel beam can carry given its hollow section dimensions and maximum bending stress. The second questions asks to find the slope at each end and maximum deflection of a horizontal beam with certain end supports and loads. The third question asks to draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for a simply supported beam with given loads, and find the point of contraflexure.

ENVE 205: Mechanics of Material

First Internal Assessment

F.M-20

P.M-08

Time allocated – 1hours 30 minutes

Attempt all the questions

1) A steel beam of hollow section of outer side 100 mm and inner side 80 mm is used on a span of
4m. Find the U.D.L the beam can carry if bending stress is not to exceed 120000 Kpa. (4)

2) A horizontal beam of uniform section and span ‘L’ is pinned at its ends which are at the same
level and is loaded with a clockwise couple ‘2M’ at the left end and a clockwise couple ‘M’ at the
right end, both in the same vertical plane. Find the slope at each end and the maximum
deflection. (3+3+3)

3) A horizontal beam is simply supported at the ends and carries a uniformly distributed load 10 KN
per meter between the supports 10 meters apart. Counterclockwise moments of 60 KNm is
applied at left end and counterclockwise 40 KNm is applied at right end respectively to the ends
of the beam at the supports. Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam.
Find the position of point of contraflexure as well. (3+3+1)
