HISTORY OF NEPAL
 The history of Nepal is intertwined with history of the
broader Indian subcontinent and the surrounding regions,
comprising the areas of south asia and East asia.
 Nepal experienced a struggle for democracy at times in
the 20th century and early 21st century.
 Nepal is named for the Kathmandu Valley.
 Where the nations founder established a capital in the
late eighteenth century.

India – Nepal Relations
 As close neighbours, India and Nepal share a unique
relationship of friendship and cooperation characterized
by open borders and deep-rooted people-to-people
contacts of kinship and culture.
 There has been a long tradition of free movement of
people across the borders. Nepal has an area of 147,181
sq.
 The Indo-Nepal border is open; Nepalese and Indian
nationals may move freely across the border without
passports or visas and may live and work in either
country.

  There are regular exchanges of high level visits and


interactions between India and Nepal.
 Nepalese Prime Minister ShriSushilKoirala visited India
to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister
ShriNarendraModi on 26 May 2014.
 Familiarization visits to India by Nepalese
journalists/editors and short term training in India for
Nepalese editors/journalists/experts/officials in the field
of print & electronic media and archaeology are also
arranged.
Bilateral Trade
 Nepal and India have a history of age-
old relations in trade and commerce. 
 India's exports to Nepal petroleum products, vehicles &
spare parts, M.S. billet, Other Machinery & parts,
cement, Rice, Medicine, Hot rolled Sheet in coil,
Agriculture equipment and electrical equipment.
 Nepal mainly exports carpets, beverage, textile, tea and
plastic.
 India and Nepal have several bilateral institutional
dialogue mechanisms, including the India-Nepal Joint
Commission co-chaired by External Affairs Minister of
India and Foreign Minister of Nepal.
  During that year, Nepal's imports from India amounted
US $2.71 billion (NPR 217.11 billion), and exports
to India remained about US $0.50 billion (NPR 39.99
billion).
