Indian Maritime University: 2) Static Electricity & Bonding Wire

The document discusses safety procedures regarding static electricity and bonding wires on tankers. It explains that static electricity can be generated during cargo operations like filling tanks, washing tanks, and steaming tanks. This static electricity must be discharged to prevent sparks that could ignite flammable vapors. Bonding wires connect metal parts to ensure electrical continuity and discharge static electricity harmlessly through the ship's hull. Precautions like using non-conductive sampling equipment and waiting 30 minutes after loading are also discussed.

2) Static electricity & bonding wire

Static electricity is produced on dissimilar

materials through physical contact and
separation.

Static electricity can cause fire and explosion

on tankers.

2) Static electricity & bonding wire

Static electricity is generated within tanks when

1) filling with clean oil products

2) washing with water jets
3) steaming a tank

2) Static electricity & bonding wire

During such operations, the product or water

mist becomes charged with electricity. The
charge will try to discharge to earth. Eventually
it will discharge itself harmlessly through the
ship’s hull.
