Car Registration/Travel

Organizer

1
INFORMATION BEFORE WE START
The fabric used to make the Car Registration and Insurance Organizer, pictured on
the first page is called …..Pocket Change….from the Man Cave Collection.

Print your pattern at 100%, or turn off scaling in your print preference.
Test square is on pattern piece #2.
Read through all instructions, before starting the Car Registration and Insurance Organizer.

IMPORTANT – VINYL…Different sellers = different measurement on Gauge

If you buy your vinyl in Walmart, it should be 10 Gauge, the one with black text on the paper
If you buy your vinyl on Amazon it is called – Kittrich, item 54-20803-36y
If you buy your vinyl in Jo Anns, it should be 20 Gauge

The above is the same vinyl, but the different sellers of vinyl, have different measurements
of the vinyl gauge.

Seam allowance is included in all pattern pieces.

Always remember to back stitch at start and end of a stitching.

Different seam allowances is used, but is provided in the sewing instructions.

There are these check boxes in every step, so you can keep track of
your progress.

I used Clover wonder clips as pins, for this project, because of the vinyl, but laundry
pegs can also be used.

ARROW SHOWS THE GRAIN

The grain is the edge in the side of your fabric, where the fabric manufacturer
have stamped their name. The arrow on the pattern pieces should be
parallel with the stamped edge.

Note:
If you choose fabric with big design print, more fabric is required so you can
place the pattern parts correct, just so you don’t end up with a half design, for example
a half flower, just remember to buy more fabric if you use a fabric
with big design print. Small and middle design prints, is preferred for this
project.

If you have any questions, I am only an email away.

Clear vinyl pocket

Pic. 11
Place the short fabric strap A = pattern piece
1 #A, on top of the marking, on your clear vinyl
= pattern piece #3. The folds we pressed
before, should be facing down, put in a wonder
clips on each side, to hold it in place.

See pic. 11

The middle of the fabric strap, should be

placed on your marking. To see where your
marking is, turn to the back, this will make it
easier to see. See pic. 12

Line up one end of the short fabric strap, with

one long edge of the vinyl. The short fabric
strap will be longer than the width of the vinyl. Let Pic.12
Let the excess fabric extend on the left side.
We will cut it of later.

Pic. 13
2 Thread a thin sewing needle, with a
contrasting thread color, handbaste with
big stitches the short fabric strap to the vinyl.

This can be a bit slippery.

Do NOT extend basting stitches beyond the

fabric strap, to avoid making holes in the vinyl.

See. Pic. 13

!
! 9!
SEWING INSTRUCTION
!
Open the long fabric strap B = pattern piece #B, once, so you can see
3
the center crease. Now lay the long vinyl edge on top, and up to the
center crease inside the long fabric strap. See pic. 14 + pic. 15

Pic. 14 Pic. 15

! !
4 Now fold the fabric strap down, so the long Pic. 16
vinyl edge is sandwiched between the long
fabric strap, and pin by using wonder
clips.

Handbaste the edge, with big stitches.

See pic. 16

If you are an experienced sewer, you can

skip the baste stitching.

5 For the next step, you will need a teflon foot or walking foot, another
option is to cover the bottom of your normal sewing foot with scotch
tape, cutting out the tape, where the needle goes in. This should create
a non-stick surface, and prevent the foot from sticking to the vinyl.

See pic. 17 Pic. 17

! 10!

6 Stitch the long fabric straps edge, using a 1/8 inch ( 4 mm) seam
allowance. This is the edge, where the the vinyl is. See Pic. 18 + pic. 19

Remove the basting stitches on the long fabric strap.

7 Do NOT remove the other basting stitches.
!
Attaching the vinyl pocket

1 With a eyeglass lens cloth, clean the

backside of the vinyl pocket. It will be
difficult to do later.

Pic. 20
2
Lay your inside lining fabric on the table,
with right side facing up. Now lay the
vinyl pocket we just made on top, and line
up edges on left side, top and bottom.

Pin the top, bottom, and left side, using

clover wonder clips. Then hand baste
really close to the edges, with big stitches.

SEWING INSTRUCTION!
!
Sew the short horizontal fabric strap #A, to the lining fabric around 3
3 edges, using a 1/8 inch (3-4 mm) seam allowance. This will divide the
long vinyl pocket into 2 pockets.

Start with the long edge closest to the top (where the little vinyl pocket
is) See Pic. 21

Stop when you come to the long vertical fabric strap B, leave the needle
in the fabric, turn and continue with the short edge, see pic. 2. Here
you can do a couple of backstitches, because this short edge is the
stress point. Then turn, remember to leave the needle in the fabic while
turning the fabric, and continue with the last long edge of fabric strap
#A. See pic. 23

Elastic closure
Pic. 27

1 Lay the outer cover = pattern piece #2 on

the table with right side facing up. Long
edges should be laying horizontal, short
edges laying vertical. Measure from right
side seam in top and bottom 1.5 inches
(4 cm) and mark with tailors chalk or an
old soap bar. See pic. 27

2 Cut your elastic, so it is 11 inches ( 28 Pic. 28

cm) long and place on your markings.
Sew in each end, near the edge, just a
couple of stitches, so it will stay in place.
We will remove these stitches later, so
don’t sew to much. The elastic would be
3/4 inch (2 cm) longer than the fabric,
that is so there is enough elastic, to go to
the back of the registration-insurance
holder. Make sure the elastic is laying
straight and NOT twisted. See pic. 28
! Pic. 29
!
3 Use scotch tape to tape the elastic to the
outer cover. See pic. 29

! 14!
SEWING INSTRUCTION

Assemble
Pic. 30
1 Lay the outer fabric cover on the table
with right side facing up….elastic should
be vertical, on right side. Now lay the
lining fabric on top, right side facing
down…vinyl pocket should be laying
vertical on top of the elastic.

See pic. 30

Pic. 31

2 Pin around all edges, using Clover

wonder clips, but leave about 5.5 inches
(14 cm) opening in left side for turning
later. See pic. 31

3 Sew the edges you just pinned, by using

a 1/4 inch ( 6 mm) seam allowance.
Backstitch over the elastic, to make sure
it will hold.

4
Do NOT remove your matching thread
basting stitches in left side, but remove
all other baste stitches, also remove the
stitches we made to attach the elastic.
!
!
!
!
!
! 15!
SEWING INSTRUCTION

5 To reduce bulk, spread out your side seams, and cut the layers in
between, only where you just stitched. Do NOT cut the layers in the
opening in the sideseam. Be careful not to cut into the stitches, or your
fingers. See pic. 32

I know this will take a few minutes to do, but it will be easier to do the
topstitching later, not to have to stitch through all those layers, and you
will get a much nicer result.
Pic. 32

Pic. 33
6 Cut off corners diagonally, be careful not
to cut into the stitches, also cut diagonal
snips into the corners, again be careful
not to cut into the stitches, or your
fingers. See pic. 33

7 Turn right side out, through the opening in the side seam, and carefully
poke out corners. Make sure you have vinyl pockets and the fabric
pocket on one side, and the outer cover with the elastic on the other
side. Here the matching basting stitches we did, comes in handy.

8 Remove the tape we used to hold the elastic in place, on the outer cover.
!

! 16!
SEWING INSTRUCTION

Pic. 34

9 Use a pressing cloth, and press the

holder, the lining side = the side with the
vinyl pockets laying down, facing your
ironing board, and the outer cover = the
side with the elastic facing up, cover with
a press cloth, and careful iron, NO
steam.
See pic. 34

Tuck the openings seam allowance

inside, and press the opening, so the
edges are even with the rest of the side
seam. Do NOT close.

!
Firm interfacing – making it sturdy

1 Lay the paper pattern piece #6, on top of your holder, to see if it fits.
You should have at least about 1/4 inch ( 5 mm) space around all edges
of the paper. If you have less than that, trim the paper pattern, so it will
fit. Now cut pattern #6 in Pellon.

Pic. 35

2 Gently bend the Pellon, and put

inside through the opening in the side
seam, and carefully unfold it inside.

See pic. 35

Finishing the holder

1 Handstitch the opening closed. I have attached a separate section, how

to do ladder stitches, just in case you don’t know how to do these.

If you don’t want to make the topstitches around the Car Registration-
Insurance Organizer, go the the last step, where we do the center
line/folding line.
! 17!
SEWING INSTRUCTION

OPTIONAL – Topstitch

By topstitching around all edges of the Car Registration-Insurance Organizer,

will make it even more sturdy, and helps keep it’s shape.

This step is optional, so if you are afraid or don’t want to sew through the
vinyl. You don’t have to, just go to the last step, where we do the center line –
folding line.

Vinyl test
Here is a little test you can do, to see how your sewing machine acts, with
vinyl, you will need a teflon foot, walking foot or your scotch tape covered
sewing foot. If you have sewed with vinyl before, and know your machine, you
can skip the test.

1 Stitch a line through 2 layers of scrap of the same fabric, you made the
holder in. Your stitches should look nice on both sides of the fabric.

Pic. 36
2 Now lay a scrap of the clear vinyl you used,
on top of the fabric scrap you just sewed,
and make another line of stitching.
See pic. 36

Take a look on both sides, if your stitches

look good on both sides, you are done with
the test.

My test looks good on the front with the

vinyl, but not good on the back, where the
fabric is.

SEWING INSTRUCTION

Change your thread tension, and make another stitching.

3 Do this until it looks good on both sides, and write down your correct
thread tension for sewing in vinyl, on this line____________

When I sew in fabric, my tension is 4, but when I sew in vinyl, I have to

change my thread tension to 9. See pic. 37 + pic. 38

Pic. 37 Pic. 38

OPTIONAL – Topstitching

1 Use your teflon foot, walking foot or scotch tape covered foot, for the
topstitching, all the way around the holder.

With your lining (the side with the pockets) facing up, topstitch around
the holder, using a 1/8 inch ( 3-4 mm) seam allowance.
Remember to change your thread tension, when you come to the vinyl
pocket, and remember to change it back again, when you are sewing in
the fabric.

Continued

1 When sewing where the elastic is, take the elastic out to the right
side, so it will be out of the way, so you don’t sew over it. See pic. 39
continued
When you do this, the other side will bend, see pic. 40, but it is only
until have passed the elastic.

Pic. 39 Pic. 40

Center line – Folding line

Sewing the center line, makes it easy to open and close the organizer.

Pic. 41
1 Measure from side to side, to find the
vertical center line. Pin and mark
using tailor’s chalk or an old bar of
soap.

See pic. 41

! 20!
SEWING INSTRUCTION

2 If you used two different colored fabrics, one for the outer cover, and
another fabric color for the inside lining fabric, change your thread,
so it matches your fabrics on both sides.

3 Sew on your marking line, from top

to bottom. See pic. 42
