CD GUIDELINES

Summary
The CD you prepare for your application is the Jury’s first opportunity to experience you as an
artist. While conforming to the requirements, you should also strive to give those who will hear it
a comprehensive picture of your musical personality, in addition to demonstrating technical
mastery of your instrument.

Your CD must have 3 separate works represented, appearing in this order (please include
complete movements, even if they are longer than 10 minutes):

1. Unaccompanied Bach (approximately 10 minutes) Prelude suite 2

2. Major concerto (approximately 10 minutes) Shosta 1 2nd mov
3. 20th-21st century work (approximately 10 minutes) Sacher Variation

Each work may fulfill only one category requirement. A Prokofiev Concerto, for example, can
fulfill the concerto requirement, or the 20th-21st century requirement, but not both. Do not
include anything other than these 3 works on your CD.

Your application will be best served by using the highest quality recording equipment,
environment, and CD media that are available to you. In addition, please make certain that it is
formatted as an audio CD and not mp3 or any other format, so that it is readable by the widest
range of playback equipment. Be sure to include clock timings (e.g., 9:45) for each work or
movement submitted.

All recordings submitted must have been made within the last 12 months. You may not perform
on two instruments within a single application (e.g. both violin and viola).

Bach
Choose one or more movements of unaccompanied Bach appropriate to your instrument,
approximately 10 minutes in total, although a longer selection is certainly fine, particularly if you
are submitting the Chaconne or one of the longer fugues. Violists are welcome to choose from
either the cello Suites or the violin Sonatas and Partitas. If you wish, you may submit movements
from more than one work; be sure that this is clear when you submit the CD.

Concerto
Choose one movement of any Classical, Romantic, or major 20th-21st century concerto for your
instrument. Submit a recording of approximately 10 minutes with piano accompaniment only.
Submissions of concertos with orchestral accompaniment will be disqualified.

20th-21st Century
This requirement is intended to demonstrate to the Jury how you handle the challenges presented
by music of your own time, in a modern compositional language. Compositions by Debussy,
Ravel, Ysaÿe, and Kreisler are specifically excluded and may not be used to fulfill this
requirement. Additionally, works such as Franz Waxman’s Carmen Fantasie and the Sibelius
Violin Concerto, while technically written after the beginning of the 20th century, do not meet
the spirit of this requirement and are not acceptable. If you have any questions as to the
suitability of a particular work, you (or your teacher or other representative) may submit your
question to [email protected] and it will be passed on to the Jury anonymously for a
determination. As with the concerto requirement, this approximately 10 minute selection should
be submitted with piano accompaniment. Unaccompanied works are also acceptable in this
category. Movements from multiple 20th/21st C works are not acceptable; all movements must
be from the same composition.

DO NOT INCLUDE:

 Works that do not fulfill one of the 3 specified requirements (e.g. encore pieces, sonata
movements unless in fulfillment of the 20th-21st century requirement). The jury will not
listen to them.
 Recordings of concertos with orchestral accompaniment. Your entry will be disqualified.
 Biographies, letters of recommendation, performance reviews, or photos. Contestants
remain anonymous to the jury during the CD review process.

Required Works
The required works for the two rounds of the Klein Competition are as follows. See details
below for which works are to be performed in each round:

1. An unaccompanied Bach work (at least one substantial movement)

2. A Classical, Romantic, or major 20th/21st century concerto (ideally the entire
composition over the two rounds, otherwise as many movements as can be played within
the time limits)
3. The required commissioned work by Lisa Bielawa; Semifinalists will receive a copy of
this work when they confirm participation in the Competition
4. One substantial movement of a Classical, Romantic, or major 20th/21st century sonata
with piano (unless the chosen sonata has only short movements, in which case more than
one may be programmed) (Final Round ONLY)

Assembling and Submitting a Program

For the Semifinals:
Assemble a 20-25 minute program (actual performance time, excluding tuning, entrances and
exits, etc.) including Bach, the entire commissioned work, and at least one major movement of
your concerto (with cuts as necessary). Do not include the sonata movement in this program.
Cuts in tutti passages of the concerto are expected in both rounds.
For the Finals
Assemble a 25-35 minute program including additional movements of the concerto as well as
the sonata movement. You may also include Bach and/or the commissioned work if time
permits. Again, cuts in tutti passages of the concerto are expected in both rounds.

Please submit your proposed programs (in performance order, and with timings for each work)
by email to [email protected] as soon as possible and no later than April 21 so the jury
may assist you in choosing selections that will both satisfy the Competition requirements and
represent your playing in the most favorable light. The Competition reserves the right to
recommend changes in your programs. If you have questions regarding repertoire, cuts, etc., feel
free to communicate directly with Competition Artistic Director Mitchell.

When submitting your program information, also include a high quality electronic copy of a
photograph, as well as biographical information (including nationality, age, teachers, schools
attended, significant performances, awards and competitions won, etc.) typed and in paragraph
form, approximately 2-3 paragraphs.

Please consider the following when compiling your proposed program:

 Your programs should be balanced and interesting to the listener as well as highlight your
best playing. It is generally advisable to play different movements in the Finals than in
the Semifinals.
 Cuts may be made as needed (and musically justified) to fit time requirements. The
judges understand this requirement and will not penalize participants based on cuts.
 Do not exceed the time limit (better a minute or two short than long). You risk being
halted by the judges if you run over the time limits. Be sure to include timings when
you submit your programs.
 All unaccompanied works and concerti must be played from memory, except for the
Bielawa composition, which we recommend but do not absolutely require that you
memorize. You are not required to memorize the sonata.
 You are not required to play the same repertoire as was on your application CD, even
though some of the categories are similar.
 When you submit your program information, please include all details necessary for the
printed program. For example: Brahms, Concerto in D Major, Opus 77, Allegro non
troppo (9:00) or Prokofiev, Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Opus 80, Allegrissimo (3:50).
