CHAPTER 8: SPACE PROGRAM

This chapter includes the analysis of the spaces in relation to the human

behavior and patterns. It is largely defined by the spatial expressions in terms

of the numbers and its geometry.

Spatial Analysis is a research that aims at the development of knowledge and

theory that can support architectural design work, both on the level of

buildings and the level of cities. Design work needs support both in its

generative phase, when possible solutions to an architectural problem are

formulated, and its predictive phase, when the performance of such solutions

are evaluated. Spatial analysis aims at especially developing predictive

knowledge and theory, keeping in mind that such theory also is of great

support in the generative phase.

8.1 List of Spatial Requirements

8.2 User Space Function and Analysis

The idea for the user space function and analysis is to show how

people pass or flow through the different spaces in the structure. The

researcher must be able to determine how the different users are to be able to

use the areas smoothly and efficiently. It is in this analysis is where the

researcher should determine what areas or spaces are unnecessary or in

need of a bigger/ larger area of use.

8.3 Space Program/ Room Data Sheets

Space Program records the function, content and characteristics of

each room or space, and can either be produced by the project team, to

inform the detailed design, or by the designers, to confirm that they have

understood the space requirements correctly. It should be numbered using

the referencing system developed in the accommodation schedule. In large

projects such as this, it is sensible for the researcher to concentrate on the

most important and complex spaces first and complete the details on other

rooms as the project proceeds. All of the Room Data Sheets for a project

should be standardized, so that information is presented consistently. The

Room Data Sheet should be circulated for each service, who must take

responsibility for completing the detailed requirements.
