Introduction
The workplace is typically an environment in which people with different personalities,

communication styles and worldviews interact according to Workplace Issues (2017). Work

experience can be very beneficial in helping every employees to gain the skills and experience

that employers seek.

Probably, becoming a professional in life means they will pay attention to the details

because it is the small things that produce big results. Being a professional one should know that,

how they do something is the same as how they do everything and nothing escapes this reality.

However, the research study focuses on the life experiences of finance officers in their

workplace which financial officers are charged with receiving and disbursing funds and they

have a general responsibility to ensure that government resources are properly managed. There

are many careers of finance officers which includes the bank tellers, insurance broker, financial

advisor, stock broker, fund manager, academe, corporate consultant, country manager, corporate

finance and chief finance officer. The study aims to discover the struggles that these finance

officers are encountering in their everyday lives in their workplace.

Furthermore, they all face uncomfortable situations at some point in life. There are

people who seem to get all the winning cards while some get a terrible hand. Likewise, it is easy

to start feeling bitter towards the people who get it all. The truth is that everyone has conflict

with something even the people who seem to have it all.

In addition, a quote says that “As long as you are enjoying what you are doing, you will

never get tired.” So these Finance officers have to take the time to learn new things and seek

out new challenges because new challenges are where the growth comes from.

Therefore, the researchers wants to discover the life experiences of finance officers in

their workplace, the struggles they are experiencing and how are they able to manage those

problems in order to inspire, motivate and help the aspiring finance officers as well as the other

people.

The study aims to explore the life struggles of Finance officers in their workplace in

Santiago City as well as discovering how they would overcome their own encounters to those

problems, specifically the study considers the following question:

1. How is the life of being a finance officer?

2. What are struggles that a finance officer encounters every day?

3. How does a finance officer manage or overcome those problems?

The outcomes of this study are the life experiences of finance officers in their workplace

which will be relevant and will benefit the finance officer themselves, ABM students and to the

aspiring finance officers. In this situation, finance officers receive benefits that can help them in

improving their working habits, in overcoming their struggles in their workplace and they will be

the object of learning and direct benefactors of the advantages of the study.

The study will help the students particularly in the ABM strand that are aspiring to be

finance officers in a way that it will inspire and it will have a beneficial effect in their decision-

making for their course.

Moreover, the findings of this study will help the finance officers in having benefits

because they will learn some tips and pieces of advice to improve their professional career and to

do better as a finance officer.

And lastly, to the future researchers, this study will help them to gain a new body of

knowledge and serve as their foundation and basis whether they would also conduct the same

research in the nearby future.

The scope of the study covers the life experiences of the finance officers specifically in

their own workplace in which the researchers would like to discover the struggles that finance

officers usually are encountering.

The study also is limited in discovering the problems they encounter, what inspires them

and how they would overcome problems found in their workplace. The study is focused and only

limited only on the three finance officers in the locale of Santiago City. It does not include their

personal life matter and only focuses on their professional careers.

Life of a Finance Officer

A Finance Officer provides direction and supervision for accounting staff and performs

diverse and specialized accounting work that is complex and involves significant accountability

and decision-making responsibility. They are also responsible for financial planning and record-

keeping, as well as financial reporting to higher management. Sade (2013) asserts that an

everyday work of a finance officers are they have to tackle a number of tasks in an average day,

often including many aims and objectives. They have to offer and also interpret any financial

information that is important, as well as monitor and then manage cash flows while also

predicting any and all future trends. They are also coming up with both long-term and more

tactical business plans. Even more ordinary things have to be taken care of each day, such as

managing subordinate staff and the daily goings on at the office.

Moreover, according to Mishra (2017), the life of a bank employee is much regulated as

day’s business is completed and updated every day. As a person dealing with other people’s

money they have to maintain secrecy and personal integrity throughout their life. In the same

way, a Public Sector Bank employee’s life is secured. Banks take care of its employees really

well. If an officer gets frequent promotions, probably they expect an upper middle class lifestyle

(Krishnamurthy, 2016). However, their journey is not easy due to the fact that they are dealing

with different clients whether it is foreign and local just for their accounting reports. According

to Mr. Rao “Employment in Bank is and will be never a bed of roses. You have to struggle to

come up in the ladder. If you are an employee (clerical cadre) you enjoy to a certain extent. You

can see your watch and work. If you are a PO or even other grade officers (from Scale I

onwards), you are not permitted to see your watch, but watch completion of your work. ”

Struggles of a Finance Officer in Workplace

Everyone worked very hard for long hours every day, suffered sleepless nights’ and

ignored the desire to hang out and have fun outside after office hours. Working in an

environment where people are committed to work and deliver to clients on time as much as

possible. This attitude should be carried on while progressing in the profession. They realized a

more meaningful definition of which accountants are: they are selfless, patient, dedicated,

passionate, sincere, caring and creative individuals. In every client engagements aside from

pouring out time and effort in working for the messy accounting records of clients, they put

hearts into it. Furthermore, Silverio (2017) believes that they are doing it not only because of fear

Agustin et.al.
6

of failing to meet the deadline or disappoint the client, but also because they are persons who

deliver output with excellence, who do work with love and eagerness to be of help to clients

through their profession. It is inconvenient for them and they take the extra mile so that things

could be easier for them. They may get tired physically but their hearts are ever refreshed with

the fulfillment brought by the love and service they give.

Nevertheless, Dr. Apruebo (2016) argues that every job have some difficulties, the job

difficulty alone do not cause stress. It is the lack of control over job situation that lead to

uncertainty, frustration and poor motivation of a worker. Stressed is considered normal or even

healthy, on the other hand, when the worker is unable to cope with stress then they may be on the

road to burnout. It is consequence of losing a sense of basic purpose and fulfillment of work.

Getting more balance or personal time will withstand stress.

According to Fiore (2014), workplace conflict leads to decrease in productivity, increased

stress among employees, not good performance, high turnover rate, and absenteeism and at its

worst, violence and death. Conflict in the workplace is the result of a variety of factors. Perhaps

the most significant cause is when someone feels taken advantage of. This might happen when a

perfectionist boss demands the same dedication and commitment from employees as they

exhibits, but does not compensate them for the late or weekend hours.

Solutions to Problems in the Workplace

In order to overcome the problems in everyday work of finance officers, they need

outstanding finance skills. They must have the ability to make smart and strategic decisions on

behalf of the organization, and they should be able to look at the company and understand what it

needs, Walters (1985).

Basically, the first thing a finance officer do is check the emails as it is important that

questions of clients are answered quickly. Clients also expect a productive service in this on

demand economy, so leaving unanswered emails for 3 or 4. Before a finance officer leave the

offices they ensure that they have finished all the work that were meant to be completed during

the day and they complete a final check of emails and other notifications relating to the questions

of clients. According to giveagradago.com (2017) in the financial industry, there are lots of

deadlines to work to, often multiple deadlines for the same client. In a finance graduate job,

prioritizing work is very important. At times they act between prioritizing work by the deadline

and by the order the work was received from the client. The best thing about environment of

finance officer is the logical approach to the work. Example is taking something that is

disorderly in some way and straightening it out. It is also really rewarding to be able to advise

small business owners to help them succeed. They try to decide whether they want to be a

finance officer. If they know what side they would like to pursue then it makes it much easier

when deciding what to study, what types of firms to apply to for training and what information to

consume.

Certified Public Accountant’s Life

Based from Anonymous (2018) observes that depending on the work environment place,

the typical day for a Certified Public Accountant can be routine, determined by the monthly

accounting cycle, or can be engage in audit activities day after day. For the most part, a job of a

Certified Public Accountant depends upon the particular office and position. Government

Certified Public Accountants perform many of the same financial reporting and management

accounting activities, but can also conduct compliance audits and investigative audits. Not-for-

profit organizations needs a Certified Public Accountant to set-up an internal control system

solve tax problem, prepare financial reports and budget resources. A Certified Public Accountant

at a business or industrial position will ensure accuracy and timeliness in following the sequence

of events required each month.

Significance of Finance Officers

Heidrick & Struggles (2018) reported that Financial Officers helps clients to an

increasingly complex and competitive talent to build great finance teams and positions them for

success within the organization and the marketplace. Alex (2018) said that “My firm specializes

in financial consultancy services for corporate clients. I’m part of Compliance within our large

Tax department and I’m responsible for ensuring that my clients meet their necessary taxation

obligations. I look over clients’ tax computations and tabulate them to make sure they aren’t over

or underpaying – in addition to paying on-time – before filling it with the necessary regulatory

bodies, like HMRC. Clients will often come to me to outline their expected spending in the

upcoming months – I’ll map out the most efficient tax strategy for them and manage the entire

process. Funnily enough, what I enjoy most is the moving around part. Nothing ever gets boring,

I get to meet so many new people, and I learn and work doing new things and develop new skills

regularly.”

Walters (2016) suggests that “If you have a finance background and are already working

in accountancy and finance, your ultimate goal may well be to become a Chief Financial Officer

Chief Financial Officer oversee all the financial operations of an organization, including

accounting and financial reporting. They manage all aspects of financial matters and decision

making. The Chief Financial Officer directs a company’s financial goals, objective and budgets.

If you work as a Chief Financial Officer, you oversee the investment of funds held by the

company and assess and manage associated risks. You also supervise cash management
Cruising on Raging Waters: Life Experiences of Finance Officers in their Workplace
Agustin et.al.
9

activities, execute capital-raising strategies to support a firm’s expansion, and deal with mergers

and acquisitions. Most Chief Financial Officers are also responsible for managing the corporate

investments and will sit of the board. And if you work as a Chief Financial Officer in a smaller

company, you may be expected to carry out a range of accounting tasks, while executives at

larger corporations typically review reports and date from various divisions within their

companies. Therefore, if you are going to become a successful Chief Financial Officer, you need

outstanding finance skills, but you need a lot more than that as well. You must have the ability to

make smart and strategic decisions on behalf of the organization, and you should be able to look

holistically at the company and understand what it needs. Importantly, you should also be able to

translate financial data into useful information for those across all levels of an organization.

Leadership, interpersonal and communication skills are also important in such a high level

position.”

Tasks of a Finance Officers

According to the UHY Early Careers (2018) concedes that, “No two days are the same.

One day you will find yourself in the back of a storeroom counting some computer component

on a stock take in your jeans and then the next you will be in a smart office block in the city.

UHY’s clients are from a range of industries and sizes so there are lots of opportunities to learn

about the issues affecting their businesses.”

Sometimes financial officers have many tasks to face inside the company in which they

have the tendency to focus on the given tasks. It hinders them from seeing the whole company

from afar to be a strategist. Finance officers’ risk are expected, on the other hand they should
Cruising on Raging Waters: Life Experiences of Finance Officers in their Workplace
Agustin et.al.
10

also be given room to make mistakes and just like an entrepreneur, they learn from their failure,

Miranda (2016).

Motivation is the Key

Indeed, as Salvador et.al (2011) states that, “Motivation is the process of arousing and

sustaining goal-directed behavior. This requires understanding the individual, the job and the

work environment, and how each of these elements interacts.” In the course of a work day, there

will be issues that arise. In some cases, issues can be avoided with efficiently through

comprehensive planning and understanding. Other situations require workplace problem solving

skills from management and staff in order to prevent difficulties. Being able to recognize

workplace problem solving will help you to better prepare to deal with work-related issues. In

short, knowing how to deal with struggles will not only do wonders for stress levels, but also for

career.

13

and do bookkeeping every day. And also includes the pressure coming from their supervisor.

Another is that some of them do not have a social life.

On the second question, “What day- to- day problems do you encounter in your

workplace?” Their answers are seniority complex is an issue, meeting the deadlines, bulk of

speaking for their right, by planning of their daily tasks, by setting their priorities, by reading and

having consultation. Another is by believing to their capabilities and by always remembering that

continue being a finance officer?” They gathered the answers that they continue being a finance

officer for their self-fulfillment in the sense that they help other people with the best of their

abilities and they also chose to continue being a finance officer to support their family needs.

However, some did not continue being a finance officer because they cannot absorb anymore the

them not all usual practices are right.

14

Always live with integrity and work with passion. Choose to be happy and everything will

Appendices

In order for the study to be finished, supplementary materials such as letters and

questionnaires are needed by the researchers. In the research study, the researchers used a letter

to be addressed to the School Principal in order to allow them to conduct their research and

conduct interviews. The researchers then used Interview Questionnaires to serve as a guide in

conducting the interview to the respondents and for them to use in questioning the respondents in

order to acquire the data needed by the researchers for the study. The researchers also used an

Observation Guide for obtaining field notes during the interview sessions.
