Reversing The Order of Integration: Evaluate

The document provides an example of evaluating a double integral by reversing the order of integration. Specifically, it evaluates the integral from 0 to 2 of the integral from y to 2 of ex dxdy. By sketching the region and reversing the order of integration, the problem becomes the integral from 0 to 1 of the integral from 0 to 2x of ex dydx, which can be solved to equal e-1. The document also gives an example of finding the area of a region bounded by two curves using a double integral, and evaluates the area of the region bounded by y=2x and y=x^2 in the first quadrant to be 4/3.

Reversing the order of integration

Example

Evaluate
𝟐 𝟏
𝟐
∫ ∫ 𝒆𝒙 𝒅𝒙𝒅𝒚
𝟎 𝒚
𝟐

Solution:

In this case, we have to reverse the order of integration because we cannot integrate
𝟐
𝒆𝒙 with respect to x analytically.

Firstly, we have to sketch the graph of,

𝑦=0
𝑦=2
𝑦
𝑥 = → 𝑦 = 2𝑥
2
𝑥=1
When we reverse the order of integration, we get:

𝟏 𝟐𝒙
𝟐
∫ ∫ 𝒆𝒙 𝒅𝒚𝒅𝒙 = ⋯ = 𝒆 − 𝟏
𝟎 𝟎

𝟏
𝟐 𝟐𝒙
= ∫[𝒆𝒙 𝒚]𝟎 𝒅𝒙
𝟎

𝟏
𝟐
= ∫ 𝒆𝒙 (𝟐𝒙)𝒅𝒙
𝟎

By using the integration by substitution:

𝒅𝒖
𝒖 = 𝒙𝟐 → = 𝟐𝒙 → 𝟐𝒙𝒅𝒙 = 𝒅𝒖
𝒅𝒙
Therefore,

= ∫ 𝒆𝒖 𝒅𝒖
𝒙=𝟎

= [𝒆𝒖 ]𝟏𝒙=𝟎

𝟐 𝟏
= [𝒆𝒙 ]𝒙=𝟎

=𝑒−1
Area calculated as a double integral

The area, A of a closed, bounded plane region R is:

𝑨 = ∬ 𝒅𝑨

Example

Find the area of the region D bounded by 𝒚 = 𝟐𝒙 and 𝒚 = 𝒙𝟐 in the first quadrant.

Solution:

𝟐 𝟐𝒙

𝑨 = ∫ ∫ 𝒅𝑨
𝟎 𝒙𝟐
𝟐 𝟐𝒙

= ∫ ∫ 𝒅𝒚𝒅𝒙
𝟎 𝒙𝟐
𝟐

= ∫[𝒚]𝟐𝒙

𝟐

= ∫(𝟐𝒙 − 𝒙𝟐 ) 𝒅𝒙
