Assignment - I 26 04 2020

This document contains questions related to thermal power stations and nuclear power stations. For thermal power stations, it asks about base load and peaking load, considerations for site selection, industrial wastes used as boiler fuels, and generator cooling methods. For nuclear power stations, it asks about nuclear reaction types, nuclear materials used in India, merits and demerits, and main reactor parts and functions. It also provides some formulae and asks numerical problems about the relation between water evaporated, coal consumed and energy generated; calculating coal required at no load; and preparing a heat balance sheet.

Assignment - I, (EEC18133) of Electrical Energy System

Department of Electrical Engineering

IIT (ISM), Dhanbad

Questions on Thermal Power Station

1) Explain what you understand by base load and peaking load? Why are base load plants loaded heavily?
2) What are the considerations to be made while selecting the suitable site for a thermal and a nuclear
power plant?
3) What are the industrial wastes and by products used as boiler fuels?
4) What is the necessity of generator cooling? What methods are used for generator cooling?

Questions on Nuclear Power Station

1) What are the types of nuclear reactions? Describe briefly.

2) What are the nuclear materials used for nuclear power plant in our country?
3) What are the merits and demerits of nuclear power station?
4) List out main parts of a reactor and briefly state their functions.

Numerical Problems
Some Formulae:
a)
ηthermal = Heat equivalent of mechanical energy transmitted ¿ turbine ¿
Heat of coal combustion
Heat Equivalent of electrical output
b) Ƞ overall=
heat of combustionof coal
c)
ηoverall =η thermal×η electrical ×ηboiler

Where
ηelectrical = Electrical efficiency of an alternator which is practically high, above 90%
ηboiler = Boiler efficiency considering the effect of economizer and air preheater, which is about 85%.

1) The relation between water evaporated (M kg), coal consumption (C kg), and energy generated (kWh)
for 8 hours shift in a thermal power plant is given by
M=15,000+10kWh ; C=5,000+5kWh
(a) To what limiting value does the water evaporation per kg of coal consumed approach as the station
output increases?
(b) How much coal per hour would be required to keep the station running at no load?

2) A thermal power plant spends Rs 25 lakhs in one year as coal consumption. The coal has heating value
of 5000kcal/kg and costs Rs 500 per ton. If the thermal efficiency is 35% and electrical efficiency is
90%, find the average load on the power plant.
Hint:- Overall efficiency ( η )=electrical efficiency ( ηele ) ¿ mechanical efficiency ( ηmech )
Heat of combustion=Coal consumption per year ¿ heating value of coal
Heat output= η ¿ heat of combustion
3) Prepare a rough heat balance sheet for a steam power station consuming 0.5 kg of coal per kWh output.
Take calorific value of coal as 5000 kcal per kg. Assume boiler efficiency as 80% and electrical
efficiency as 90%.
