Material and Mechanics Lab Report Creep Test Amro Areed 20161103047
The student conducted a creep test on a polyethylene sample by mounting it in a testing machine and applying a weight. The sample was heated to steady state and the deformation was measured over time intervals using a dial gauge. Results showed that heating the sample to 60 degrees Celsius under a load caused a deformation of 0.63mm and strain of 0.029 over the test period, demonstrating the effects of creep on the polyethylene material.

Describe the experiment procedures by your own words:
1. The first step is to mark our sample of polyethylene for the reduced gauge length . 2. The second step is to mount the specimen on the test area using the mounting screw. 3. The following step is to raise the support screw till it narrowly touches the beam. 4. We close the door of the machine and switch the power on. 5. We switch the heater on and wait for the temperature to achieve steady state 6. Then we lower the support the screw 7. We calibrate the dial gauge to zero 8. We adjust the weight at the weight hanger to our desired weight, then we set up the timer for a minute and turn it on 9. After a minute, the alarm triggers and we can see the recorded gauge reading. 10. We can repeat the above to steps for extra readings. 11. Then we switch off the heater, timer and power 12. We tabulate the results and plot a graph of strain against time. Write your own summary and conclusion: Materials when exposed to mechanical stresses and elevated temperatures can result in deformation we call this deformation creep, creep happens since elevated temperatures lead to metals deforming faster and easier since it increases atom speeds, because of that we need to do creep testing prior to determine the effect that creep has on our desired materials. We can see from the results the effect that a temperature of 60 degrees Celsius had on our polyethylene specimen that reached a deformation of 0.63 and strain of 0.029
