dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and

collaboration. Websites and applications dedicated to forums, micro blogging,

social networking, social bookmarking, social curation, and wikis, facebook,

instagram, youtube, google, etc. are among the different types of social

media.

This study looks at social media network participation and academic

performance in senior high students. This study aimed in identifying social

media and their usage among students, how students participate on social

media, time invested by students on social media, the effects on their

grammar and spelling as well as the effects of social media participation on

the student’s academic performance within the context of the social learning

and the use and gratification theories. To achieve the objectives of the

research, the study used a mixed method approach which involved the survey

of students in senior high students and interviews of heads of the senior high

students.

According to Bong Santisteban in facebook basing their grades on

social media engagement will only prompt them to roam around in social

media and asking everyone, even total strangers for likes and shares.

Santisteban also called the current generation as millennial beggars. This

issue has been the topic of the researchers, journalists and the students on

1
today’s generation because if its basis strategy performance. One of the

important cause and outcome for this phenomenon is the effects of social

media on the academic performance of students are important matter in

assessing the students reaction in dealing with the problem.

According to his research, facebook is said to be the most popular

social media among students as reported by some researchers and it has

reached a one billion user base in October 2012. This social media blog there

are students spent time on a certain has a mean 24 minutes per visit. The

assume that students spent time on the social media visit is normally

distributed and that the standard deviation is 6 minutes.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

The review of related literature is discussed in this chapter in order to

provide readers a better understanding of the background and information

about research studies on the effects of social media on the academic

performance.

Review of Related Literature

Ul Haq & Chand (2012) investigated the usage and popularity of

famous social media among the senior high students with special focus on the

gender based comparison and the impact of the selected social media on

their academic performance. The two researchers evaluate the pattern and

frequency of social media use among the senior high students while focusing

gender that majority of the users (61%) agree that this social media has

adverse effects on their academic performance. Further analysis reveals that

among these (61%), majority of the respondents were male.

In addition to adverse effects of social media on academic

performance, there was also an opinion that use of social media makes it hard

for them to perform the best on their career performance. However, the

researcher feels that the later opinion is not very clear and established and

needs further investigation. This research analysis to shows that using social

media especially in terms of using social media is equally popular among

male and female students of their school under study. The researcher

7
evaluate also that majority of the users agree that these social media adverse

effect on their academic performance.

This study related in our study in the way of investigating about the

effects of social media on their academic achievements among students.

They are both undertaking through analyzing a random sample of

respondents.

Hamat, Emir, & Hassan (2012) studied the use of social media

platforms among undergraduate and post graduate students of Malaysian

institutes of higher education. This qualitative research collected data on 6358

student’s respondents through a self-administered questionnaire and

analyzed this data to make observation on the use of social media among

them. This study collects opinion of students about the impacts of social

media on their academic performance. One of the very significant findings of

the study is about the use of social media for the purpose of learning. Majority

of the respondents agree that they use of SNSs as informal learning tool and

that it helps them to connect their friends and peers to get help regarding their

studies. However, in case of interaction with teachers, an equal split of

opposite exists.

This study also supports the most common finding of majority of well-

structured studies that use of social media has no significantly negative

impact on the student’s academic performance. The further state that the

possibility of some other factors like social media addiction more time on

internet, chatting, cognitive absorption etc. linked with the use of internet of

specifically social media may cause poor academic performance.

8
The above literature reviews show that other students are using social

media for their learning, they use as a learning tool. It has a significant on our

study because the use of social media can affect the academic performance

in a positive and negative way. Social media addiction is the top negative

effect that may cause poor the academic performance of senior high students.

Negussie/Ketema (2014) further investigated if there is any impact of

using social media while accessing through different devices. Among a variety

of devices, it was found that the correlation between using social media on

mobile devices and student’s grades is highly negative as compared to using

social media on other devices. This adverse effect is explained by the fact that

using cellphones for social media activities may involve multitasking and all

students are not equally efficient in multitasking skills.

Review of Related Studies

The study suggests that students must be encouraged to use social

media for educational purposes instead of blocking theses platforms in the

educational premises. This study has a correlation in our study because they

both proving using social media have a big impact in the academic

achievement among students.

The purposed research model tests how to social media usage effects

performance of students with different personality traits. In additional the

research tries to justify the relationship among the academic performance.

Their analysis of 239 student’s data reveals very significant results. This

9
research establishes that using social media has strong negative impact on

academic performance of students with extrovert personalities. However,

factor of self-regulation among students greatly reduces this negative impact

as they have high level of effective self-control while using social media

platforms.

This research effort aims in finding the effects of social media on the

student’s academic performance. Therefore, the literature review discusses

the relevant study that is useful to the objectives of this research project.

Several research studies investigating the topic under review are found

recently. Since most of the innovation features offered by social media

platforms like facebook, twitter, and many others are not that old and the

phenomenon of the use of these media has been dominated and evolved

recently with the introduction of revolutionary features and platforms.

However, in recent times, social media have provided an additional

medium through which social media can be developed and explored. Social

media has been increasingly popular over the past decade, attracting millions

of active users worldwide. These sites offer an opportunity to maintain

friendships and date. The following article highlights the positive and negative

experience of three people with learning disabilities using social media. The

negative effects of experience reported by our service users highlighted areas

of concern with regard to their safety. As a result, a therapeutic group was

formed to address these online experiences and emotional support. At the

end of the group, service users reported that they are more confident about

discussing and problem solving issues around online use.

10
Abstract one of the recent popular social media platforms is the social

media. Thus far, few previous studies have empirically investigated people’s

motivation for social media usage, especially not outside the U.S. this study

combines a large-scale quantitative and qualitative research design, by asking

1,200 social media users an open question regarding their reasons for using

social media.

An important conclusion drawn from a preliminary content analysis is

that people often report many motivational reasons for using social media.

The most important reason is to get in contact with new people (31%). The

second most valued was to keep in touch with their friends (21%) whereas the

third was general socializing (14%). Sub-reasons were identified: that all give

insight into the personal incentives that drive people use social media and

thus contribute to our understanding of how to develop successful social

media.

researchers which aimed to collect data on the effects of early involvement to

romantic relationships towards the academic performance of the respondents.

The survey questionnaires that contains 20-item questions. To secure the

validity of the research instrument, the questionnaire was submitted to

research adviser for critiquing and corrections. To test the validity and

reliability of the test, the test was administered to seventy (70) Junior High

and Senior High School students of Leyte National High School for the pilot

testing. The result of items was analyzed to see the power of discrimination

and index of difficulty. The test will be submitted to the researcher’s adviser to

correct the test.

Data Collection

After getting the necessary permit (see Appendix B), the researchers

wrote and personally gave informed letters asking permission to the target

respondents. Upon approval, the researchers and the respondents set a date,

time, and place for the survey. Before the survey formally started, the

researchers oriented first on how the survey would be done. The interview

took place within the school campus, usually in the vacant classrooms during

the participant’s vacant time. The duration of the survey was at the range of

ten (10) to fifteen (15) minutes. After all the fifty (50) respondents were

surveyed the researchers proceeded to the analysis of the data.
