DESCRIPTION: Introduction to the methods and materials used in contemporary and

historical building construction. Wood, steel and concrete structural systems
will be explored, as will major interior and exterior finish systems. The
relationships between occupancy and construction types will be reviewed
as will the influence of building codes, climate, labor supply, and economic
factors.

NOTE: Students who have already enrolled in this class and have not signed
in on first day of class will be automatic dropped for the priority adds
students.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES for the course are as follows:

1. Describe major structural systems using wood, steel, masonry, and
concrete;
Architecture 12 Course Syllabus Page 1
2. Identify and evaluate various interior and exterior finish systems;
3. Identify and explain the behavior, appearance, and use of building
materials;
4. Understand how building materials are categorized by building
industries.

COURSE OBJECTIVES in support of overall Learning Outcomes include the following:

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Identify and explain the behavior, appearance, and use of building
materials;
2. Describe major structural systems using wood, steel, masonry, and
concrete;
3. Identify and evaluate various interior and exterior finish systems;
4. Explain in general how building codes, occupancy types, and
construction types influence each other;
5. Explain in general the effect of climate, economics, and labor supply on
construction methodology; identify how building materials are
categorized by building industries

CONTENTS: This course will examine the materials and methods used in building
construction today. While the primary focus will be on contemporary
construction methods and the materials employed in these systems, the
history and development of materials will also be considered.
Appropriateness, availability, economic implications, methods of use and
impact on design will be discussed for each material. To the extent
possible, materials will be exhibited and, when time permits, videos will be
shown highlighting each topic.

PHILOSOPHY: Architecture is a field that requires a basic understanding of building

construction technology and materials. In order to make effective use of
your knowledge of materials we will be working with the development of
details and construction strategies that might be worked out in architectural
practice. Joints and intersections of materials are the source of both
architectural interest and construction problems - exercises will focus on
understanding how to approach the design and construction problems they
present.

EVALUATION: Grades will be based upon lab exercises, chapter quizzes, assignments
and class blackboard discussions. Quizzes, lab exercises and assignments
will be assigned and graded; for full credit they must be completed and turn
them in on time.
§ Quizzes and class discussions cannot be made up.
§ Late lab exercises and assignments will not be accepted.
§ Course grades will be based on the following distribution:

WEEKLY QUIZZES 100 points

ASSIGNMENTS 30 points
LAB EXERCISES 20 points
CLASS PARTICIPATION 64 points (Discussion Board)
TOTAL 214 points

§ Final grades will be based on average points:

Architecture 12 Course Syllabus Page 2
A 214 – 192 D 148 - 128
B 191 – 171 F 127 - 0
C 170 - 149

Class participation is required and students will be required to

participate in discussion board. No “W” grades will be assigned; after the
first week it is the student’s responsibility to withdraw from the class. Failure
to do so will result in an “F” on your record.

LAB EXERCISE: Lab exercise is required as part of learning outcome. To obtain full credit
you must:
• Complete all required materials.
• Turn them in per assigned deadline.
