This document provides 8 problems to solve related to vectors and forces. The problems involve calculating displacements, components of forces, resultants of forces, and vector subtraction. Students are asked to solve each problem completely using free body diagrams and show their work on bound paper with 1-inch margins.

PROBLEM SET 1

Solve the following problems completely with the free body diagram. Write your solutions in
short bound paper with 1 inch margin in all sides.

1. A bug starts at point A, crawls 8.0 cm east, then 5.0 cm south, 3.0 cm west, and 4.0 cm north
to point B.
(a) How far north and east is B from A?
(b) Find the displacement from A to B

2. The resultant of two forces in a plane is 400 N at 120º. If one of the forces is 200 N at 20º,
what is the other? Use trigonometric method.

3. Two workers pull horizontally on a heavy box, but one pulls twice as hard as the other. The
larger pull is directed at 25.0° west of north, and the resultant of these two pulls is 460.0 N
directly northward. Find the magnitude of each of these pulls and the direction of the smaller
pull.

4. If α = 350 find the resultant in vector form. Use component method.

5. Determine the resultant of the following coplanar forces 90 N at 210º, 130 N at 260º, 15 N at
30º and 55 N at 80º. All angles measured from (+) x-axis.

6. Determine the magnitude of the component force F and the magnitude of the resultant force
R if R is directed along the positive y axis.
7. Three players on a reality TV show are brought to the center of a large, flat field. Each is
given a meter stick, a compass, a calculator, a shovel, and (in a different order for each
contestant) the following three displacements:
A = 72.4 m, 32.0° east of north
B = 57.3 m, 36.0° south of west
C = 17.8 m due south
The three displacements lead to the point in the field where the keys to a new Porsche are
buried. Two players start measuring immediately, but the winner first calculates where to go.
What does she calculate?

8. Given : A = 30 mm, 30º from the (+) x- axis

B = 50 mm, - 45º from the (+) y- axis
C = 40 mm, 60º from the (-) y-axis
Find: A - B - C
