AM1100 Worksheet 5 - Kinematics of Rigid Body Systems

This document contains 10 problems related to kinematics of rigid body systems. The problems involve calculating velocities, accelerations, and angular velocities/accelerations of various points and members in systems undergoing rotational and translational motion. Key concepts covered include determining velocities and accelerations for points on rotating bodies like wheels, beams, and plates. The problems also involve analyzing mechanisms with multiple rigid links undergoing combined rotational and translational motion.

AM1100: Engineering Mechanics :: Even Semester 2013

Worksheet 5: Kinematics of rigid body systems

1. A bar moves in the plane of the paper so that the end A has a velocity of 7m/s
and decelerates at a rate of 3.3 m/s2. What are the velocity and acceleration of
point C when member BA is at 30o to the horizontal.

2. Bar AB is rotating clockwise and, at the

instant shown, the magnitude of the velocity
of point G is 3.6 m/s. Determine the angular velocity of each of the three
bars at that instant.

3. In the position shown, bar AB has an angular velocity of 4 rad/s clockwise.

Determine the angular velocity and angular acceleration of bars BD and DE.

4. An automobile travels to the right at a constant

speed of 80 km/h. If the diameter of the wheel is 560 mm, determine the velocities
and accelerations of points B, C, D, and E on the rim of the wheel

5. For a 5-m steel beam AE the acceleration of point A is 2 m/s2 downward and
the angular acceleration of the beam is 1.2 rad/s2 counterclockwise.
Knowing that at the instant considered the angular velocity of the beam is
zero, determine the acceleration (a) of cable B, (b) of cable D.

6. A cone is rolling without slipping such that its centerline rotates at the rate of 1 of
5 rev/s about the Z-axis. What is the angular velocity of the body relative to the
ground? What is the angular acceleration vector of the body?

7. A mechanism with two sliders is shown. Slider A at

the instant of interest has a speed of 3m/s and is
accelerating at the rate of 1.7m/ss. If member AB is
2.5m in length, what are the angular velocity and
angular acceleration for this member?

8. Pin P is attached to the collar shown. The motion of

the pin is guided by a slot cut in bar BD and by the
collar that slides on rod AE. Rod AE rotates with a
constant angular velocity of 5 rad/s clockwise and
the distance from A to P increases at a constant rate
of 2 m/s. Determine at the instant shown (a) the
angular acceleration of bar BD, (b) the relative
acceleration of pin P with respect to bar BD.

9. Four pins slide in four separate slots cut in a circular plate as shown.
When the plate is at rest, each pin has a velocity directed as shown and of
the same constant magnitude u. If each pin maintains the same velocity
relative to the plate when the plate rotates about O with a constant
counterclockwise angular velocity ω, determine the acceleration of each
pin.

10. At the instant shown the length of the boom AB is being decreased at the constant rate of 0.18
m/s and the boom is being lowered at the constant rate of 0.08 rad/s. Determine (a) the velocity
of point B, (b) the acceleration of point B.
