This document summarizes the design of a traffic signal with 4 phases (a, b, c, d) and the calculation of cycle length, green times, and amber times. It determines the critical traffic volumes for each phase to calculate the cycle length of 475 seconds. It then allocates green times for each phase based on their fraction of the critical traffic volume. Amber times are set at 5 seconds for phases a, b, and c and 6 seconds for phase d based on intersection widths. The final conclusion lists the green and amber times for each phase.

Determination of Critical Movements (V/S values)

Phase a - Max(360/1440 , 60/1440) = 0.25
Phase b - Max(280/1800 , 115/1600, 420/1800 , 360/1600) = 0.225
Phase c - Max(140/1440 , 100/1440) = 0.097
Phase d - Max(90/1600 , 100/1600 , 490/1800 , 660/1800) = 0.367
Therefore, Cycle Length

C= 1.5 X (4 X 4) + 5 = 475 sec

1 - (0.25+0.225+0.097+0.367)
1 - (0.25+0.225+0.097+0.367)

Amber Time Calculation

v = design speed = 80 kmph = 22.22 m/sec
rt = reaction time for braking = 1 sec
dc = comfortable deceleration rate = 4 m/s2
L = design vehicle length = 5m
W = Width of intersection = 17m (N-S) , 28m (E-W)
Minimum amber time
t = rt + (v/2*dc) + (W+L)/v
t = 1 + 22.22/2*4 + (22,33)/22.22 = 4.77 sec (N-S) , 5.26 sec (E-W)

Amber time approximated to 5 sec for phase b. (North-South)

and 6 sec for phase d. (East-West)
Amber time assumed as 5 sec for phase a.
and 6 sec for phase c.

Green Time allocation

G = C - sum(amber time + all red time)
All red time = 1sec per phase
G = 475 - (2*(5+6) + 1*4) sec = 449 sec
See Table : Fraction of Green Time = (V/S)/SUM
Green Time = 449 * (Fraction of Green Time)

As per IRC, Requirement for Green time Tp = 7 + (W/1.2) = 21.17 sec , 30.33 sec
Tp approximated to 21 sec for phases a & b and 30 sec for phases c & d.

Check : (Tp - Amber time) should be less than Final value of alloted Green time
For Phase a & b, Tp - Amber time = 16 sec. (<108 sec & <120 sec) OK
For Phase c & d, Tp - Amber time = 24 sec. (<175 sec & <46 sec) OK
