Covid-19 Laboratory Report Exp 4

This laboratory report summarizes an experiment on the synthesis of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) carried out by three students for an organic chemistry course during the COVID-19 pandemic. The objectives were to prepare aspirin from salicylic acid and acetic anhydride and measure its purity. Apparatus were set up with proper labels. Questions addressed the function of sulfuric acid as a catalyst, the reaction mechanism, calculating actual yield from given amounts of reactants, recrystallization process, and using ferric chloride to confirm the product. References included descriptions of the synthesis and using ferric chloride to identify salicylate compounds.

Experiment 4
a. Preparation of Acetylsalicylic Acid (Aspirin)
(refer to : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lFQaxiRAmI&t=10s)

b. Objectives of the experiment: (2 marks)

i. To prepare acetylsalicylic acid from salicylic acid and acetic anhydride
ii. To measure the synthesized acetylsalicylic acid’s purity

c. Apparatus & setup: (4 marks)

d. Questions:

d. Questions:

i. State the function of sulphuric acid in the experiment?

Function of sulphuric acid in the experiment is to act as a catalyst which speeds up the
reaction and also act as dehydrating agent forcing equilibrium to the right forming greater
yield of ester.

ii. Show the step-by-step of reactions mechanism on the formation of acetyl

salicyclic acid upon reacting salicylic acid with acetic anhydride in acidic
condition.

iii. Calculate the actual yield of product from the given information:
Amount of salicylic acid used = 2.0 g
Volume of acetic anhydride used = 10 ml
Isolated product yield = 86%

C₇H₆O₃ +¿ C₄H₆O₃ → C₉H₈O₄ +¿ C₂H₄O₂

Amount of salicylic acid used: 2.0 g

2.0 g
Mole salicylic acid, C₇H₆O₃ = Molar mass C₇H₆O₃ = 138 g/mol
138 g /mol

= 0.0145 mol

1mol C ₉ H ₈ O ₄
From equation: 0.0145 mol C₇H₆O₃ ×
imol C ₇ H ₆ O ₃

= 0.0145 mol acetyl salicylic acid, C₉H₈O₄

Mass C₉H₈O₄ = Mole × Molar mass Molar mass C₉H₈O₄ = 180 g/mol

= 0.0145 mol × 180 g/mol

= 2.61 g

CHM457_MARCH-JULY 2020_ONLINE ASSESSMENT_COVID19

Mass of theoretical yield = 2.61 g

Percentage yield = 86%

actual yield
Percentage yield = × 100%
theoretical yield

actual yield
86% = × 100%
2.61 g

86
Actual yield = × 2.61 g
100

= 2.2446 g of acetyl salicylic acid

Actual yield of acetyl salicylic acid isolated = 2.2446 g

v. Explain briefly how to conduct proper recrystallization process

(2 marks)
Add a small quantity of appropriate solvent to an impure solid.
Next, Apply heat to dissolve the solid and Cool the solution to crystallize the product.
Lastly, Use vacuum filtration to isolate and dry the purified solid.

vi. Confirmation of the product (aspirin) as compared to starting material of salicyclic

acid can also be tasted using Ferric chloride. Explain this statement. (2 marks)

The collected aspirin will be tested for its purity using FeCl3 (aq). Salicylic acid contains

phenol group, but acetylsalicylic acid does not. Therefore, if you add FeCl3 to
an aspirin sample and you see a purple color, it means that there is still some salicylic
acid present and the sample is impure.
