4 Assignment

The document describes the assignment problem and provides steps to solve it. The assignment problem involves assigning N jobs to N operators with the goal of minimizing total cost. The procedure involves normalizing the cost matrix by subtracting row and column minimums, then cancelling out zeros to reach an optimal solution where the number of cancellations equals the matrix order. Optimal assignment rules involve sequentially assigning single zeros and cancelling corresponding rows and columns until all assignments are complete. The document provides several examples of assignment problems with cost/time matrices and asks to find the optimal assignments that minimize total cost/time.

ASSIGNMENT

4
Basic Concept
In an assignment problem there are N jobs and N operators. Any job can be assigned to any
operator. The cost of each assignment is available. The objective is to find out the optimal job
operator assignment which minimizes total cost.

Procedure for Solving an Assignment problem:

Step I: Find the minimum element of a row and subtract this minimum element from each
element of the row. Repeat this for each row.
Step II: Find the minimum element of a column and subtract this minimum element from each
element of the column. Repeat this for each column.
Step III: Cancel all the zeros by drawing minimum number of Horizontal and / or vertical lines. If
minimum number of lines used for cancelling the zeros is equal to the order of matrix, the
problem has reached to optimal solution; hence, proceed to optimal assignment.

Optimal Assignment Rules

Find a single zero in a row or in a column and assign it.
If the single zero happens to be in a row, cancel all the zeros appropriate to this one in
the corresponding column.
If the single zero happens to be in a column, cancel all the zeros appropriate to this one
in the corresponding row.
Proceed in this way till all assignments are complete.
If we do not find a single zero either in a row or column, choose any one zero arbitrarily
and proceed accordingly.
if minimum number of lines used for cancelling the zeros is not equal to the order of matrix, the
problem has reached non-optimal solution. To reach the optimal solution, proceed to generate
additional zeros by taking the following steps:
(a) Find the minimum of un-cut elements and subtract this minimum from all the un-cut
elements.
(b) Add this minimum to the intersection numbers
(c) Apply step III (mentioned above) to find whether optimal solution has been reached. If
yes, apply Optimal Assignment rules. If not, repeat (a) and (b) till optimal solution is
reached and then apply optimal assignment rules.

companies have made bids as detailed below:

the cells of the following matrix along with profit.

Q5. A manufacturing company, has four zones A, B, C and four sales engineers P, Q, R, S
respectively for assignment. Since the zones are not equally rich in sales potential, therefore it is
estimated that a particular engineer “P” operating in all the zone will bring the following sales:

sales are proportional to 14,9,11 and 8 respectively. The criteria of maximum expected total
sales are to be met by assigning the best engineer to the richest zone. The second best to the

room has its advantages and disadvantages. Each of the 5 managers was asked to rank their
room preferences amongst the rooms 301, 302, 303, 304 and 305. Their preferences were

Q14. The ICAI decides to hold special seminars on four contemporary topics for its members:
Ind. AS, Goods and Services Tax (GST), Negative list in Service tax and Direct Tax Code (DTC).
Such seminars should be held once in a week in the afternoons. However, scheduling these
seminars (one for each topic, and not more than one seminar per afternoon) has to be done
carefully so that the number of members unable to attend is kept to a minimum. A careful study
indicates that the number of members who cannot attend a particular seminar on a specific day
is as follow:

Ind. AS GST Negative list DTC

Monday 40 30 50 20
Tuesday 30 20 30 30
Wednesday 50 10 20 20
Thursday 20 30 10 30
Friday 10 20 10 30

Find an optimal schedule of the seminars. Also find out the total number of members who will
be missing at least one seminar.

CA-FINAL 4.9 CA. RAJ K AGRAWAL

OPERATIONS RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT
Ans 14. This is an unbalanced minimization assignment problem. First of all balance the given
problem by dummy seminar:
Ind. AS GST Negative list DTC Dummy
Monday 40 30 50 20 0
Tuesday 30 20 30 30 0
Wednesday 50 10 20 20 0
Thursday 20 30 10 30 0
Friday 10 20 10 30 0
Row operation not required. Doing Colum operation.

Subtracting the minimum element of each column from all elements of that column, we get the
following matrix.
Ind. AS GST Negative list DTC Dummy
Monday 30 20 40 00 0
Tuesday 20 10 20 10 0
Wednesday 40 0 10 0 0
Thursday 10 20 00 10 0
Friday 00 10 0 10 0

The minimum number of lines to cover all zeros all zeros are 5 which is equal to the order of the
square matrix (i.e. 5), the above matrix will give the optimal solution which is given below
Day Topic No. of Members Missing
Monday DTC 20
Tuesday No Seminar 0
Wednesday GST 10
Thursday Negative list on Service tax 10
Friday Ind. AS 10
Total 50
Thus, the total number of members who will missing at least one seminar = 50
