METROLOGY & QUALITY CONTROL:
Develop A Control Plan: Practical # 11
The producer of a candy bar, called the “A Rod” Bar, reports on the package that the calorie content is 420 per 50-
gram bar. A sample of 5 bars from each of the last 10 days is sent for a chemical analysis of the calorie content. The
results are shown below. Does it appear that there are any days where the calorie count is out of control? Develop an
appropriate control chart and analyze your finding. Also prepare the Quality action plan if calorie count is out of
control.
2-The Inter Global Moving and Storage Company is setting up a control chart to monitor the proportion of
residential moves that result in written complaints due to late delivery, lost items, or damaged items. A sample of 50
moves is selected for each of the last 12 months. The number of written complaints in each sample is 8, 7, 4, 8, 2, 7,
11, 6, 7, 6, 8, and 12.
(a) Design a percent defective chart. Insert the mean percent defective, UCL and LCL.
(b) Plot the proportion of written complaints in the last 12 months.(using software)
(c) Interpret the chart. Does it appear that the number of complaints is out of control for any of the months?
(d) On which Probability distribution does the given chart based? state reason
Also prepare the Quality action plan.
Practical 14: Construct control charts by means of software.
1-An automatic machine produces 5.0 mm bolts at a high rate of speed. A quality control program has been started
to control the number of defectives. The quality control inspector selects 50 bolts at random and determines how
many are defective. The number of defectives in the first 10 samples is 3, 5, 0, 4, 1, 2, 6, 5, 7, and 7.
(a) Design a chart for no of defectives. Insert the mean percent defective, UCL, and LCL.
(b) Plot the no of defective for the first 10 samples on the chart.(using software)
(c) Interpret the chart.
(d) On which Probability distribution does the given chart based? state reason
Q-3
Solve the above question manually.
Q-4A company produces a liquid which can vary in its pH levels unless the production process is
carefully controlled. Quality control technicians routinely monitor the pH of the liquid. When the
process is in control, the pH of the liquid varies according to a normal distribution with mean µ =
6.0 and standard deviation σ = 0.9 . a. The quality control plan calls for collecting samples of
size three from batches produced each hour. Using n = 3, calculate the lower control limit (LCL)
and upper control limit (UCL). b. Samples collected over a 24-hour time period appear in Table
below. Compute the sample means for each of the 24 samples and add the results to a copy of
Table below.
PH samples collected hourly
c. Make an X-bar chart. Add reference lines including lines for the lower and upper control
limits.
d. Based on the control chart you drew for (c), decide whether or not the process is in control. If
not, state which of the decision rules applies.
