One Way Slab Design

This document summarizes the design of a one-way slab (S2) with a clear span of 1365mm, total depth of 125mm, and supported on one end and simply supported on the other. It includes calculations of loads, bending moments, reinforcement requirements, check for depth, deflection and shear. The slab requires T8 bars at 200mm c/c as positive reinforcement and T8 bars at 250mm c/c as distribution reinforcement. Negative reinforcement is not required. The design meets requirements for depth, deflection, shear and reinforcement limits.

Design of One-Way Slab Marked as "S2"

Clear span of the slab = 1365 mm

Total Depth of the slab assumed = 125 mm 4
Clear cover to main reinforcement = 20 mm
Width of the support = 230 mm
Support Condition at one end : 2
Support Condition at another end : Simply supported
2
Simply
Characteristic Compressive strength of concrete, fck supported
= 25 N/mm2
Grade of Steel,fy = 500 N/mm2
Width of the slab to be considered,b = 5125 mm
Effective depth of the slab, d = 101 mm
Effective span of the slab, leff = 1466 mm

Load Calculations:
Dead load of the slab = 3.125 kN/m2
Floor Finish on the slab = 2.0 kN/m2
Total Dead load on the slab,wd = 5.125 kN/m2
Total Live load on the slab,wl = 1.50 kN/m2

Bending Moment calculations:

Maximum positive Bending Moment = (wd+wl)*leff2/8
= 1.78 kN-m

Maximum negative Bending Moment = 0.00

= 0.00 kN-m
Factored positive B.M.,Mu(+ve) = 2.67 kN-m
2
Mu/b.d (+ve) = 0.05
Factored negative B.M.,Mu(+ve) = 0.00 kN-m
Mu/b.d2 (-ve) = 0.00

Check for depth:

Effective depth of slab = sqrt(Mu/0.133.fck.b)
d= 12.52 mm
Overall depth of the slab, D = 36.52 mm
Therefore Assumed depth is adequate.

Positive Reinforcement calculations:

Required Area of steel at midspan,Ast(+ve) =

Ast(reqd) =
f ck
2fy [ √ Mu
1− 1−4 .598 2
bd f ck
. bd
]
60.91 mm2
Required percentage of steel, pt = 100Ast/b.d
= 0.12 %
It is greater than minimum percentage of steel, 0.12%
Limiting percentage of steel for U.R.S.,pt limit = 19.94 x fck/fy
= 1.20 %
Hence the section is Under reinforced section
Dia.Of bar used for +ve reinforcement = 8 mm
Spacing of the bars,Sv = (b x Asv) /Ast 335.10 mm
say 200.00 mm
Minimum spacing required = 3.d = 300.00 mm Whichever is less
300.00 mm
Provide T8 @ 200 C/C as +ve reinforcement
Provided percentage of steel = 0.25 %
Distribution reinforcement:
Minimum percentage of steel = 0.12 %
Area of steel required, Ast(dist) = 621.15 mm2
Dia.Of bar used for dist. Reinforcement = 8 mm
Spacing of the bars,Sv=(bxAsv) /Ast(dist)= 414.73 mm
say 250.00 mm
Minimum spacing required = 5.d = 500.00 mm Whichever is less
300.00 mm
Provide T8 @ 250 C/C as distribution reinforcement

Negative Reinforcement calculations:

Required Area of steel at support,Ast(-ve) =
f ck
2fy [ √ Mu
1− 1−4 .598 2
bd f ck
. bd
]
Ast(-ve) reqd = 0.00 mm2
Required percentage of steel, pt = 100Ast/b.d
= 0.12 %
It is greater than minimum percentage of steel, 0.12%
Limiting percentage of steel for U.R.S.,pt limit = 19.94 x fck/fy
= 1.20 %
Hence the section is Under reinforced section
Dia.of bar used for +ve reinforcement = 8 mm
Spacing of the bars,Sv = (b x Asv) /Ast #DIV/0! mm
say 250.00 mm
Minimum spacing required = 3.d = 300.00 mm Whichever is less
300.00 mm
Negative Reinforcement is not required

Check for Deflection:

(leff/d)basic = 20
Percentage of tensile reinforcement = 0.25 %
Modification factor for Tension rein.Kt = 1.28 (From IS:456)
Modification factor for Comp. rein.Kc = 1.00 (From IS:456)
(leff/d)Max. = (leff/d)basic * Kt * Kc = 25.60
(leff/d)provided = 14.51 < (leff/d)max
Hence Provided depth is adequate.

Check for Shear:

Maximum Shear Force, V = 0.5*(wd+wl)*leff
= 4.856125 kN
Factored Shear Force, Vu = 7.28 kN
Nominal Shear stress, Tv = Vu/b.d = 0.01 N/mm2
Percentage of tension reinforcement,pt= 0.25 %
Design Shear strength, Tc = 0.36 N/mm2
This value is further enhanced by multiplying factor.
Multiplying factor ,K = 1.5
Therefore Design Shear Strength= KTc= 0.55 N/mm2 > Tv Hence OK
Maximum shear strength,Tcmax = 3.35 N/mm2 > Tv Hence OK
Hence Shear Strength is within the allowable limit.
