MYP Science 10: Lab Report Writing Guide

This document provides a guide for writing a lab report for a science experiment. It outlines the typical sections included in a lab report such as the title, background, research question, hypothesis, variables, method, data collection, data analysis, conclusion, and evaluation. The guide describes what information should be included in each section, such as stating the independent and dependent variables in the research question section and explaining how to collect and record data in the method and data collection sections. Diagrams, tables, and graphs are recommended for visualizing experimental setups, results, and trends in the data.

MYP Science 10: Lab Report Writing Guide

Title Write an appropriate title for your investigation.

Backgro Identify the general topic / problem/question to be investigated and describe real-world applications or issues (see p.275/276).
und You should identify the factors that affect the rate of reaction and then focus on one, which will be written in your aim.

Use diagrams to explain the factor that affect the rate of reaction (only the factor that your are going to investigate) & collision
theory

Researc Describe what you are trying to find out in this investigation. Usually one or two sentences are sufficient if the independent and
h dependent variables are clear.
Questio
n Prompt:

How does changing the ……………………… affect …………………………………………….

Hypothe Hypothesise what the expected the outcome of the investigation will be
sis
Prompt:

I hypothesise that …………………………………………..because…………………………..

Use scientific knowledge and terminology to explain your hypothesis

Variable Identify your key variables

s
i) the independent variable which you are changing

ii) the dependent variable which you are measuring or observing

iii) the control variables which you must keep the same.

You may present this in the form of a table:

Independent variable Dependent variable Controlled variable

Manipul Explain how you plan to collect sufficient and relevant data. What values of the independent variable will you select? How many trials
ating for each value? How will measurements be made? What units will be used?
variable
s
Material List all of the materials and equipment (including chemicals) you will use. Use a table to show this.
s
Make sure that you choose the best materials available for the purpose.

Safety Identify the relevant safety issues. How will you make sure that your investigation is safe?

Use CLEAPSS to find the information regarding the chemicals risks in handling the chemicals used and how to dispose
them.

Method Explain how to carry out the investigation, step-by-step. Use numbered steps or paragraphs. Use passive voice in the sentence writing

The method must explain how you will be manipulating; measuring and controlling the variables you listed. Describe how you plan to
collect how sufficient and relevant data.

Include a flow chart to show the experimental design.

Diagram You may need to draw a labelled diagram to help show how your materials are set up. In some simple experiments a diagram may not
be needed.

Data Record your results in a table. Your table will contain raw (directly measured) data and may include processed (calculated) data such

Collecti as averages.
on
Make sure the table has a title and correct headings with units. In most investigations you are expected to repeat results (trials). Then
you can calculate the average.

Data Your processed data should be presented visually, either as a line graph or sometimes a bar chart.
Process
ing You are expected to select the most appropriate type of graph/chart. Give your graph(s) a title. Make sure that the axes are correctly
labelled, including any units. Make your graph large enough to read clearly. If you data shows a trend, then include a suitable best fit
line (trend line). This may be a straight line or a smooth curve.

You are encouraged to discuss any outliers found in your data and explain how to improve your data collection and analysis.

You are encouraged to include the calculations of the slope from the plotted graph (which reflects the rate of reaction).

Conclus Re-write your research question and answer the questions with supporting data/ graphs collected from your experiments.
ion
Reflect on your data and graph. What do your results show? Does this agree with your original hypothesis? You are expected to
describe your results using correct scientific reasoning.

You are expected to reflect carefully on your experiment. The following prompts may help you.

Evaluati Describe if/how the method enabled you to collect the necessary data. Was your method valid?
on
The method I chose was valid/not valid because ……………………………………..

I would like to continue / change ……………………………………………………………… next time. Why is this?

Discus the strengths and weaknesses in your experiments.

Describe how you could improve or extend your investigation.

If I were going to extend this experiment I would…………………………………………… Why would you do this?
